Careful there (I received a ban warning for using that term. To avoid the ban: I had to put myself on 'ignore'for a month).
It's not at al surprising that Hill is in the lead for the #2 spot (to me anyway) but it doesn't guarantee anything about his 2014 performance. I've been gone for like 2 months and I think people are having the exact same arguments as before I left.
Everyone love to talk about Stephen Hills hands like thats the number one issue. The guy can't run a route. I'll take a receiver who can get open that drops passes over a receiver that can never get open and doesn't drop anything. How is it that someone with Hill's strength and speed can never find any space.
I know it's probably only been a month, but I'm glad to see you make a post. As far as Hill goes, I'm glad Marty thinks he's doing well, but MM also admitted that he was high on Hill last year at this time. We'd be in great position if Hill took that step this season, I'd be first in line for crow. But I want to SEE it. I'm not selling out for another project player.
I think he'll likely be the guy taking the most WR snaps behind Decker, and I think 700-800 yards would be pretty ok. I feel like we have enough other weapons (for the first time in quite a while) that we don't need him to be an all star to have a solid offense. My whole thing all along wasn't so much that Hill was going to be great, it was mostly opposition to the ridiculous notion that Hill was going to be cut or as low as 5 or 6 on the depth chart.
QFT. Just a general point: it's the offseason. On every team, the staff should be high on all their players because, at this point, anyone can be a contributor to a superbowl winning team. (E.g., this time, three years ago, Pete Carroll was singing the praises of his 3rd round QB selection, and look where that got the Hawks). No front office, no coaching staff, no analyst can pick out exactly which players will contribute to a winning season (see e.g., Rodger's injury last year; the emergency of Alfred Morris two years ago). That's why so many players are on the roster at this point -- some will be chaff, others will be wheat. TL;DR: At this point, MM and the staff should be high on everyone on the roster (and if they're not high on someone who's taking a spot, then that person shouldn't be there).
Precisely, it's the offseason. Russell Wilson emerges as the starter, this after the Seahawks plunked down fairly serious loot for a backup QB. Victor Cruz, monster 2nd half against the Jets in a preseason games, gets hurt, put on IR, is forgotten, returns the following year and steals the show. On the other hand, Brett Ratliff to David Clowney is touted as Montana to Rice 2.o .... it's just wait and see for now.
I think it was Seattle that decided to jam Hill and he never made it off the LOS the entire game. On a similar note....what game was it last year that Rex decided to jam the other team's TE with 'cover-2' at the LOS? That was some funny shit right there. Back to Hill, he'll have a hard time beating out Nelson. Nelson is a great rout runner with sure hands. Tall and strong. Not blazing fast but very reliable. He gets open. He catches the pass. Nelson was our #2 behind Kerley last year and now with a training camp to learn the playbook and get some chemistry with Geno he'll be tough to beat out. Hill's actually competing with the new guys just to make the team.
http://nypost.com/2014/06/23/david-nelson-the-favorite-for-jets-no-2-wideout-after-full-offseason/ Brian Costello says Nelson the favorite for #2 wr Outlook for 2014: Nelson is in the mix to be the team’s No. 2 wide receiver. The Jets have several guys fighting for the spot, but Nelson appears to be the favorite judging from OTA and minicamp snaps. Nelson had to learn Marty Mornhinweg’s offense on the fly last year. It will be interesting to see how much better he can be with a full offseason in the system. Nelson had 61 catches in 2011 for Buffalo. The Jets would sign up for a season like that in a second. The starting job is not guaranteed for Nelson. His roster spot is not even guaranteed. He is battling Stephen Hill and draft picks Jalen Saunders, Shaq Evans and Quincy Enunwa. But Nelson is a professional receiver, something those others have not proven, so I would give him the edge in winning a starting job.
I think you're right...I just remember laughing at Tony G. getting gang raped every snap by two defenders, every step, every play. Or it might have been against the Saints but either way man that TE was getting PISSED!!!
Well, Costello knows what we all know: Nelson became our instant #2 as a mid season walk on and will only get better with a training camp and Geno figuring out how to toss the rock to his own guys. Hill? The only thing worse than his knees are his hands. 20 yrs from now when retired WRs are getting knee and hip replacement Hill will be getting hand replacements.
I think Nelson represents a serviceable backup WR on the outside, so he's the bar. Hill certainly has the ability to be above that bar, so he has to prove that he's better than a serviceable backup to get the job this offseason. We all know too well by now about the questions regarding his hands, route running, durability, and inability to high point a ball have been for the first two years of his career. Despite the hate he gets on here he has had a few games where he looked pretty good before getting injured and disappearing. MM mentioned that excuse, and maybe it's nothing more than words or maybe there is some validity to it and the extra year of experience might let him finally start to produce if he stays healthy this year. Probably wishful thinking but the team would have a higher ceiling if Hill is starting meaning he has beaten out a solid backup in Nelson to get the job. I'd rather see Hill get one last chance to prove himself before going back to Nelson and kicking him to the curb, it seems like MM is thinking along those lines too which is fine with me.
so when does training camp start? I don't know how much more of this meaningless crap I can stomach. Nelson appears to be in the lead based on what? running routes against air? sorry to be that guy. I must be getting old.
