It's not cheating when your coach hands out play books like candy. If Rex handed a playbook to anyone not associated with the Jets he's an idiot. You think if someone showed at up at jets HQ and handed a copy of the Pats playbook to Rex he would refuse it?
How is this different from them signing Marquice Cole or Shaun Ellis and asking them about the playbook?
Giving a playbook to that snake Saban is basically like walking into Pats HQ and giving it to Belichick himself. They aren't "pretty good friends" like Pettine said nicely, they are really good friends. Plus Saban is as shady as it gets anyway. Can't blame Belichick for this one - unlike spy gate he didn't even have to secretly acquire the information, this time the Jets HC basically handed it to him!
is this really a question to ask? 1)Because they aren't going to remember the entire playbook in all its detail.... 2.)because it's free and easier to have all that info handed to you instead of having to sign a player and having to shake what you can out of him. 3.) because it's made public that you signed those players and the Jets can expect that you got some information and prepare accordingly. instead of just having everything without them knowing 4.) because Belichick can make copies and send it off to whoever we are playing the following week if he wanted. We are division rivals so he hopes we lose to other teams.
Is it really cheating if our head coach gives it to a rat bastard like Saban and that rat bastard give it to Belicheat?
I guess it really shows how overrated the Pats are if even with our playbook they barely beat us in our 1st meeting and lost to us in week 7. If you have the playbook and struggle to beat an 8-8 Jets I guess you really aren't that good. Or maybe our coach is better then theirs.
Using a network to solicit a playbook of an opponent is certainly unethical in principal, and yes it is a form of cheating. you could argue it's akin to the concept of insider trading. You'd think someone busted for unauthorized sideline video surveillance would stray away from receiving any electronic transmission or hard copy of such a thing. There is enough tape available to understand the assignments of the D in all the formations they've shown, so why even take that risk? It would suggest to me that BB hasn't changed a bit despite being given a massive break/cover up from Goddell. All that said, who knows if Saban actually gift wrapped this thing for BB, or if BB did in fact receive one at all. It's all just hearsay, but it does sound plausible.
if it is nothing but base plays and base formations of what the Jets run I dont think its a big deal. If its a detailed playbook then thats a problem. I cant imagine Rex doing it but I guess I wouldn't be too shocked. He does seem like the overly trusting type.
quite possible. if you watch enough tape, you can essentially recreate a defensive playbook. as long as you don't know the calls (hand signals or audible), you'd still have to diagnose what look the defense is showing you. and we know that Rex is pretty good at disguising his formations.
Well, if he had copies of the Jets' playbook it would be pretty stupid of him to tell that to a Jets coach. You'd want to keep that a closely guarded secret. On the other hand, Brady seems a bit overconfident at times. (Watching a Broadway play and spending a night on the town the day before losing to the Jets in the playoffs in 2010.) So, he might have been telling the truth. There's also a chance that Brady had knocked back a few and was feeling extra cocky and unguarded (instead of the default smug and aloof combo.) Anyway- the playbook would not have been from 2013; Pettine was in Buffalo. So it was probably from 2012- that could partly help explain that terrible year. Hopefully Rex has learned from that failure and stopped giving out playbooks so freely. If he's still doing it, then that's a big, big problem. In 2013 it seemed like Brady was struggling against the Jets, so my guess would be that the Patriots did not have the Jets' playbook, and I'm taking it as a sign that Rex stopped being so careless with the playbooks after Pettine left.
I mean in the sense that everyone knows what everyone is doing with every play accessible to teams via game film, plus the myriad of players that come and go, we probably know everything that NE does too. Even if you have the playbook you don't know what they are running because the nomenclature and audible calls change week to week and season to season. I doubt it's anything to be worried about. Just my take.
I'd be curious to know how often other NFL head coaches share playbooks w/ colleagues at different levels or from different leagues. While not the wisest move Rex has made(and surely he'll need to make an adjustment moving forward) there is a bit of a political element to this. Often times NFL coaches really count on college coaches to get the real "inside scoop" on players coming to the next level. Arguably the best defensive mind in college ball is a very good inside contact to have from Rex's perspective..the playbook is almost like a "lobbying"-esque tool. If this involved any other team..we likely shrug it off. But I'm sorry. It's always bullshit like this when it comes to the Patriots. Even beyond the taping of signals people forget about the stealing of radio frequencies(which to me is even worse than the videotaping) that had been alleged & assumed true YEARS before 2007. If you're gonna act smug, arrogant & privileged(which the organization & their fans constantly do),you can't have controversial crap like this always swirling about. How do you expect the Jets & their fans are gonna react when we see this same garbage happening 6 years after spygate? I mean seriously. Better yet..what if the shoe was on the other foot? We'd be hearing about how the "Jets still can't beat Brady even with their playbook" & that somehow the wrongdoings of spygate would be eradicated. I wonder if they'll start a "Pettine is a rat" campaign in Foxboro like they did for Mangini. I wonder how long before one of BB's fishing buddies ALA Jimmy Johnson comes to his defense & Patty cake fans start clinging to it like a security blanket.
Jane McManus @janesports 6m Ryan said he gave a defensive playbook to Nick Saban when he came for a 4 day visit. #NFL #Jets You people.
Why the hell would he give one to Saban? Makes you question if he's been using Rex's plays and Saban's whole defensive mastermind persona is all from Ryan.
I'm guessing it was 2010 (Hard Knocks season) when Rex was inviting everybody and their brother to Florham Park: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/12/magazine/12ryan-t.html?pagewanted=all
This is a crappy copy of the image, but you can still tell it was ours: I heard about this a year or two ago. They were shooting a Bama documentary and there it was on his desk in the footage.
He's also saying it's ridiculous to think it had any effect on games and that it changes year to year. He also defended Belidouche, saying it discredits his work to think he had an unfair advantage. So there's that.
For all we know that a playbook was from the first season was Jets coach. I'm betting it wasn't a updated one and if so who care.
