I don't think there is a thread about this, but damn, I think we can have a discussion around it. Pettine is profiled in SI's MMQB article today by Greg Bedard,: http://mmqb.si.com/2014/06/19/mike-pettine-cleveland-browns-coach/ While most of the article isn't noteworthy, because who cares about Cleveland - they are a joke. There is an interesting tidbit regarding Rex and our Jets. Pettine suggests New England acquired the Jets playbook along the line... Here, from his words: "The initial playbook itself is actually quite thin, and that’s by design. “I don’t put a lot of graduate-level information in it,” Pettine says. “We know in places like New England, it’s only a matter of time that they somehow mysteriously end up with our playbook.” Pettine told a story of how, at Wes Welker’s wedding [2012], Tom Brady bragged a little bit to Jets outside linebackers coach Mike Smith, who was Welker’s college roommate, that the Patriots may or may not have had possession of a couple Jets defensive playbooks. “It didn’t shock me because Rex would give them out like candy anyway,” Pettine says. “He gave one out to [Alabama coach Nick] Saban and I was like, ‘Don’t you know Saban and Bill [Belichick] are pretty good friends? I have a feeling it’s going to end up in New England.’”
Why the fuck is Rex handing his defensive playbook to Nick Saban? Was he trying to butter him up during a scouting trip? What the fuck?
Good Lord! If true, that is on Rex, not Belichick. Not like Rex changes his D that much year to year, so that is a problem.
Rex comes off like a real goober sometimes. Way too trusting in people. Pettine is a more serious guy so I'm sure it rubbed him wrong
Rex's defensive schemes have changed pretty dramatically in each of his 5 seasons with the Jets. They changed between 2009 and 2010 despite the Jets going to the AFC Championship Game in 2009. Rex giving out one of his old playbooks has about the same significance as the opponent getting to watch the game film from last season. In 2010 the main reason the Jets did as well against the Pats as they did was Brady's confusion under pressure. That doesn't sound like a guy who had the playbook ahead of time.
I could see Rex doing that. But if you're a coach that received the playbook as a "gift", why would you share it with other coaches. Specially NFL coaches. It's no surprise when teams from the AFC East sign our castoffs and why we sign theirs. This is just more of the same. Besides playbooks are tweaked very often in every level of football. I'd guess in the NFL they are tweaked daily. Wonder why Pettine didn't give this info to Manish first though. He's gotta be pissed.
I'm really not concerned about it since we did pretty damn well on defense (especially in Week 2 and the second half of week 7) against the Pats. Still, if this is true, this would be a pretty dumb move on Rex's part. We don't need to give the team we are trying to dethrone from the division title any help when facing them.
Well, the wedding was in 2012 so that playbook likely effected the 2011 or 2012 seasons. 2011: Patriots-30 Jets-21 Patriots-37 Jets-16 2012: Patriots-29 Jets-26 (though Jets outplayed them) Patriots-49 Jets-19
Lmao at all you people calling Rex an idiot for giving out his play books. Do you people actually believe that nonsense? Hahahahahaha
I guess this is why we have a top defense every year. Because everyone knows what we're doing The season needs to start already lol
It really doesnt make that big a deal if its true but its still very very bad on Rex's part. And you just know the trolls especially Rich Cimini are going to have a field day with this
Same guy who thinks the offensive coordinator saying Geno is grabbing the bull by the horns in minicamp is big, important news.
At least we have someone to undo all of that hard work Blocker has done trying to water down the definition of "Homer."
