It is relatively recent. In the past the amount of added time was at discretion of field ref and you'd know when it's over when the final whistle is blown. As you can imagine, this lead to a lot of "it's fixed" conversations (in a lot of cases very legitimate IMO). That's why they changed it to current format when stoppage time is announced ahead of time.

There is, or at least was, another style. England used to be famous for crosses into the box with tall players scoring headers. England being the birthplace of futbol, this was a very distinct style for many years. The change started in 60s when highly technical Brazilians simply out scored their opponents. They used to have saying: "You will score as many as you can, we will score as many as we want".

My personal favorite is Dutch Total Futbol. The idea is that your whole team is extremely physically fit. They would keep pressing you throughout the whole game, letting go for only short moments, 3-5 minutes, and on purpose so that they can try to catch you on counterattack.
Dutch used to completely dominate midfield, limiting opponents to long low percentage passes. Most times than not by mid second half the opponents would be exhausted and not being able to keep up. That's when the real fun begin and Dutch forwards and midfielders would penetrate deep into the box resulting in 2-3 goals wins.

    hey Stokes

RuJFan is right. It is pretty recent. 3-4 years maybe. I couldn't find the exact time. With the addition of 4th referee to the futbol, this thing also started but when exactly I don't remember.

20 years ago, the US beat Colombia in the World Cup, after an own goal by Andres Escobar. After the World Cup, Escobar was murdered.

    http://worldsoccer.about.com/od/Soccer-History/a/The-Andres-Escobar-Murder.htm

    The Andres Escobar Murder
Andres Escobar was allegedly baited about his own goal in a nightclub and went out to the car park to drive home. He was accosted by three men and a woman and as he argued with them, protesting that his own goal had been a mistake, two men took out handguns and shot him six times. He was escorted to the hospital and pronounced dead after 45 minutes.
Humberto Castro Muñoz, a bodyguard for members of a powerful Colombian cartel, confessed to the murder and was sentenced to 43 years, but let out after approximately 11 for good behavior. Muñoz was also the driver for Peter David and Juan Santiago Gallon Henao, and one version of the story claims they bet heavily on the team and were upset at having lost.

The Gallon brothers were drug traffickers who had left Pablo Escobar’s organization to join Los Pepes. In the documentary ‘The 2 Escobars’, one of Pablo Escobar’s closest confidantes claims the Gallons’ ego had inflated to such an extent after they had helped bring him down that they resented being answered back to by the player. It had nothing to do with gambling, he argues.

He claims in the documentary that it was not the bodyguard who shot Andres Esbocar but the Gallon brothers who then paid Carlos Castano, a prominent figure in an extreme right paramilitary organization, to buy off the prosecutor’s office, and the murder investigation was redirected towards the bodyguard who was jailed.

The documentary claims that had Pablo Escobar still been alive, Andres Escobar would not have been targeted by the Gallon brothers because "El patrón" was a soccer fanatic and friends with the national team players.

Escobar's funeral was attended by over 120,000 people and his murder prompted several players to quit the Colombia national team or retire altogether.

The last 5 matches have brought it down to just about average. I think it is about 2.88 right now.

Here is why those figures are skewed and are comparing apples to bananas. The World Cup takes place only every four years. Throw in the impact of nationalism. The only other sporting event that involves national competing against each other is the Olympics, and the ratings for that are high also, and it includes obscure sports that nobody gives a shit about for four years after the Olympics end. Plus the US is an immigrant heavy country and that is also driving up the ratings. if the US had lost to Ghana, the ratings for Sunday would drop like a rock. The US sporting events you are comparing these ratings to take place every year after fans have watched entire seasons. They involve teams representing cities, not countries , and the platers are not from those cities. That is why you cannot compare the World Cup ratings to the NBA finals, which were not very compelling. When a US soccer league, or the Premier League draws numbers like a 7 share consistently , then those ratings mean something. Otherwise, it is just a quadrennial novelty.

That's quite funny. Also (and not related directly to the situation above) is that the time added on at the end of the game is a minimum, the ref can add more if he likes. Amazing how many people forget that...oh, and that handball has to be deliberate, so the ref ballsed up the pen award to Australia earlier.

Well Netherlands is through to the KO stage, I guess they made me eat my words that they would not play well following an abysmal Euro 2012. It also means that Chile should only need a draw against Spain and they'll be in good shape as the Dutch only need a draw against Chile to get through which means they might be content with drawing with Chile. Basically if Spain does not find a way to win they are royally screwed
