The moment the Dutch winger kicked the ball to pass to the guy who scored the goal with header, the goal scoring guy was behind the defenseman.

He is not offside the moment when the passing is made.

Edit: #3 in Spain is to the left of van Persie in that moment.

Look I am just the messenger. I am not making the rules. By the way, I am teaching you offside, you will teach me grilling and smoking. Deal? :)

Look closely: the defender on the near side is.
Perhaps you don't understand the rule. It's not "defender between attacker and goaltender".
The offside rule is there must be at least 2 D players between attacker and the goal line at the time of the pass.
One of those 2 is the goalie. The second is the guy on the near side. What matters is that at the moment of the pass there are 2 players of the opposing team who are closer to the goal line than the attacker.

Honestly, you look at that and you look at the disallowed goal by Mexico on the corner kick and you guys sound like kids that make up rules as the game goes on.

"No Daddy, if your foot isn't on the puppy, you're not allowed to flip the ravioli into the toilet."

    Wait whut?

There is a lot of bullshit calls re offside, no doubt about it. But in this particular case no call was legit.

Grilling, not smoking. That's not my bag yet.

But I do have an awesome non-smoked quick pulled pork recipe that'll make you the envy of any backyard BBQ.

I guess my real quarrel is with the call in the Mexico game and not because they missed who touched the ball last.

The fact that you can all be compressed all in the crease on a corner kick and one attacker's toe is beyond a defender that is one stride from the goalie and call that offsides is incomprehensible to me.

I can understand the Dutch goal. But the corner kick?

I agree. Even further I never understood how offside can be called at the corner kick. The ball is closer to the goal line than any player so IMO in this situation offside is not possible, ever.
Of course the rule says nothing about position of the ball, only about the players. Still never made sense to me

I guess that's part of my point. It's ON the goal line. When it's kicked. It is impossible to have someone closer to the goal than the ball when kicked.

Offside whistle was blown not when the corner was kicked. It was blown when the ball met with the Cameroon players head. Right at that moment goal scoring Mexican was closer to the goal line then any other Cameroon defender. Refs called it offside because they taught the guy with the header was a Mexican and trying to pass the ball to his Mexican friend who scored the goal. Maybe I am not understanding your question so please ignore what I wrote if this is not related wit what you are asking.

An offside will never be called on a corner kick. It is technically impossible. Because no back pass is an offside. But when corner is delivered, if a guy touches the ball with any of his body part and passes to ball to his teammate then it is an offside if his teammate is the closest one to the goalkeeper.

    Brooklyn,
You're right, the rule does speak about the ball. And to confess I didn't see Mex game yesterday.

    Law 11 - offside
    Offside position
It is not an offence in itself to be in an offside position.

A player is in an offside position if:

he is nearer to his opponents' goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent
A player is not in an offside position if:

he is in his own half of the field of play or
he is level with the second-last opponent or
he is level with the last two opponents

I'm sure this all checks out but to me, a novice, it sounds like gibberish. :D
