Loved Last Samurai. Also Collateral, Minority Report, Oblivion, Jack Reacher, (guilty pleasure Knight and Day), Tropic Thunder, War of the Worlds, Rain Man, Risky Business. And a top 5 movie of all time, A Few Good Men. _
The Master is on the list for worst movies I ever saw. The Tree of Life, The Garbage Pail Kids Movie, Howard the Duck, and The English Patient are some others.
oh shit I forgot about Last Samurai that was an awesome flick Top Gun is just epicly cool man, that's why people love it. it's like Roadhouse and Highlander
Watched it. Typical Cruise fare. Decent everything and great nothing. Will make a bunch of money from hype and then be forgotten.
Not the worse movie to come out this summer. Not the best either. Starship Troopers was better and when you add in the GroundHog Day backline, you get good entertainment. The movie was pretty good as there was no real slow spots. Typical Cruise action/sci fi flik. It won't lose money but it won't be on par with Winter Soldier but perhaps match Godzilla.
Good flick, fun summer fare. They did a good job bringing the novel to the screen, had to expand the story somewhat because the book was so short, but all in all pretty enjoyable. Cruise makes a great steady transformation from paper pusher to the ultimate warrior without overacting. Nice job. Pretty good special effects too. If you're going to see it, see it on a big screen (Imax or RPX) in 3D. I'm not a huge 3D fan but for big actioners it works. _
***SPOILER ALERT*** The paper pusher line probably needs one of those too. Effects were hit or miss with me, most of the time the Mimics just looked like an inconceivable jumble of CGI (and they never did explain in the movie why they call them mimics). Good action for the most part, but the movie basically made me feel like they were translating the experience of playing a 1st person shooter video game to the big screen. I'm sure the book was better, this just seemed like light on plot and heavy on computer graphics, like a lot of movies these days that are meant to get their bang from box office hype and not substance.
Yeah should have added a spoiler alert, apologies . The mimics are much different in the book, not as photogenic/movie-like so they made them much flashier- but good description 'inconceivable jumble of CGI'. In the book, the mimics looked like fat blobby frogs with a thick outer skin and filled with a poisonous sand. Extremely heavy, out of proportion to their size. Forget why they were called mimics. Agreed light on plot, but the entire plot revolved sound the concept of Ground Hog Day and how to defeat the enemy. That's straight from the book. _
If anyone is interested in comics, the manga adaptation of All You Need is Kill has been translated. I've heard its a 1:1 adaptation of the light novel. I read it and I thought it was pretty damn good. Art was great too. It was drawn by the guy who drew Death Note, for those familiar with manga.
I finally saw this movie and have to say I agree, at least in this case. Cruise was awful in this, from the first scene it looks like he's already on the verge of a nervous breakdown and his demeanor never really changes through the hundreds(thousands?) of deaths and days repeated in the movie. It's a shame because this movie had a pretty cool concept but some of the choices they made with the comedic tone and the ending in particular really undermined the movie.
You know what's sad? His best acting job (imo) in the past decade was in Tropic Thunder. Part of it was the makeup and I think another part was that he wasn't taking himself so seriously because of the makeup. Every other role, he played Tom Cruise.
Most of his movies follow the formula of enough action and explosions to detract from the mediocre acting and plot lines. Also for someone like me who has read a bunch of the Jack Reacher novels, since Reacher is 6 foot 5 inches, 250 lbs in the novels and Cruise is 5 ft. 6 in., 145 lbs. it really was disappointing they didn't cast someone who more fit the character.
I really loved this movie...Maybe its because I love the time travel concept and this time-loop story was something I really enjoy. I also remember admiring GroundHog Day the movie with Bill Murray and wanting to see more movies like that. I will def read that comic!
