http://m.bleacherreport.com/articles/2087020-what-we-learned-from-jets-qb-geno-smiths-2013-season "The New York Jets' 2013 season often took on the personality of its quarterback: flashing brilliance at times, mired with inconsistency at other times. In the NFL, it's never about what you did last year. It's about what you do this year and in future years; However, players must learn from the past in order to succeed in the future. Geno Smith showed the ability to lead an offense at times in 2013, and he has warranted continued (if temporary) faith as the future of the franchise. He must build off last year, improving in key areas that held him back as a rookie. In order to paint the most accurate picture possible, I reviewed each of Geno Smith's throws from the 2013 season. Here's a link to the raw data. Now, let's get a closer look at where Geno excelled and where he struggled in 2013."
I wasn't expecting much when I saw Bleacher Report, but there is a ton of analysis in that article. I'll have to read it more in depth later when I have some time, hopefully the information he has is accurate.
I love Bleacher report now. I have their app and I read it every day. They have completely turned it around from what they used to be. Nice post
Ok, got a chance to read this entire article. Very well put together! This is why I am so excited for Geno's future. I have a feeling he could be something special. I hope he does. This is something we desperately need. Soaring would be awesome for 2014
Actually read a BR article, I guess I can cross this off the bucket list. You can't question Geno Smith's physical talent. You have to love the way he completes those out-route passes (one of the more tougher short yard throws in the league). Right on the money and plenty of zip on the ball. The kid is so raw, this article really puts on display the things he needs to improve on. So far I really do so more negatives to his game then positives, so hopefully the footwork gets better and with that, his entire game will improve. Geno has shown the ability to get better in college, so let's hope the same happens in the pros.
He's got the perfect cast to help him. Marty, Vick, and upgraded weapons. This year could be a huge step forward for him
There was some nice analysis in there but I really disliked the way he seemed to brush off the footwork issues, particularly from under center. Many issues can be traced back to footwork and it's vital that he improves that. The conclusion seemed quite homerific too. Not sure how he jumped from showing a few good things to that last paragraph. I'm not surprised to see the responses I'm seeing though.
Sometimes a rookie season is like a series of hurdles with a wall of bricks near the end of it. For Geno the hurdles got higher and higher and he hit the wall about game 10 or 11. Then he picked himself up and started clearing hurdles again. Anybody who thinks Geno is toast off of last season is only 50/50 to be right in that determination. He could also turn out to be a good QB. We just don't know yet. This year will tell the tale, and it'll start spinning in camp when we see what strides Geno has made now that he has had an off-season in which he didn't assume he was going to be great.
When I close my eyes and re-think Geno's maiden voyage the first thing I see is Geno back peddling 5-10-15 yards every snap, plus his behind the back strip sack in the endzone as a result. But then as the season progressed he started stepping up into the pocket on occasion and good things started to happen. First, the o-line started to feel better about him and started to actually block for him. Second, I saw him pull the ball down and scamper with success. Geno said in the beginning he's not a running QB, but after 3 or 4 big gains that won games he seemed to embrace running a bit more. Bottom line he grew from a dance happy Rookie with terrible footwork and zero trust in his o-line to a more mature QB that started stepping up and making throws, combined with a late ability to make something out of nothing with his feet. He definitely gave us reasons to be positive.
Well I know there's the one retard that labeled Geno a bust the second we drafted him but does anyone take him seriously? Aside from that, Geno gets a lot of criticism but I don't see people calling him toast. He earned the criticism btw.
There were people claiming he was toast the day after he was drafted. There are several people who post regularly who clearly do not think Geno Smith is capable of getting it done at this point. I think it's a 50/50 thing. I won't be particularly surprised if he succeeds or fails at this point. I won't even be that surprised if he is spectacularly good or spectacularly bad. There are a bunch of good QB's, including recent draft picks, who sucked for a season and then figured it out. I'm just realistic about the downside as well as the upside. What we've seen so far suggests Geno has a real chance to fail as the starting QB of the Jets.
I often post about his negatives in response to what I believe are overly optimistic Geno opinions. While I recognize his upside and improvements the sunshine gets a bit too bright for me to ignore at times. His rookie season was more bad than good IMO.
It's really going to be about whether the light comes on for him or not. He has the capabilities to be a good NFL QB. He either gets the game to slow down and become more natural for him or he doesn't. There have been a lot of good prospects who never managed to get themselves grounded in the NFL. QB is probably the toughest job to do well in professional sports.
That was a really good article I love the comparisons. Look at Holmes get clobbered at the end! I hope there was a flag.
that was literally the ONLY thing Geno Smith did right that entire nightmare of a day. I didn't read the article but if it referenced this play/game I find it dubious
The footwork issues were to be expected given the college program he played for where he was rarely under center. I think it all boils down to turnovers & managing the game.If he stops throwing picks & continues to master keeping drives alot w/ his feet...the sky is the limit. He can throw the rock w/ anybody in this league.
This is key... Needs to make his reads better as well.. Often missed wide open targets last year, although this cut down as the season progressed.. This kid could be a Top 10 QB, it really is up to him... Hope he is busting his ass right now because it is all there for the taking.
Once he improves his footwork, every other facet of his game will improve along with it. Having excellent footwork is essential in today's league. The TOs and interceptions won't stop until he fixes his fundamental flaws. Some players that light never goes on. Hopefully for our case, it does for Geno. I like Geno Smith though - he wants to work hard and improve every facet of his game. From draft day to now, my opinion of him is like day and night.
