richardson and milliner won't be re-signed any time soon, certainly not soon enough to be affected by Kerley. thats an easy 5th year option usage to keep them on roster during 2017 at best, or a contract prove it year in 2016 at worst. When/If re-signed the bigger money that comes with a new deal won't be given to those two anytime before 2017, thats for certain. I imagine any JK re-signing won't have any cap impact that lasts that long. Decker got two years of essentially guaranteed years on the roster, Kerley would be lucky to get that much, but certainly wouldn't receive more. Point is those two aren't gonna get impacted by JK's deal whatsoever. Harrison is a more immediate concern as hes a restricted free agent this march, Wilkerson is another that will need to be renegotiated in the immediate future. but neither is gonna be impacted by JK's deal, not substantially so. the jets have about 40 million dollars in cap space going for them next year, maybe more if that thursday night football deal impacts the cap enough. together the two Sons they might cost 15 million or so together in 2015, if my earlier projection became reality (JK is a 3 million dollar cap hit in 2015) thats not gonna prevent the jets from going them their contract, especially since those deals should increase in value with time and be at their lightest the first year or so, not that an extra 2 mill or so is really gonna be the breaking point. i get the idea, JK is second rate and only elite/ clearly above average talent talent should be renegotiated if one wants to stay cap friendly. But if a guy like Cumberland, Colon or Pace can get resigned why not kerley for SLIGHTLY more? those are all guys that the team needs to have around to round out its cast, they could have gone different route and resigned some other jag to fill any one of those positions, but they kept THEM. I'm expecting the same of Jeremy Kerley, and really I'm wary of reality where he's not here for the next two years. letting go of talent in a position bereft of it of late would be ill-advised.
When I used those three guys, it was just an example, I didn't actually calculate who is going to be up for contracts and when. Instead I am just trying to illustrate the general idea, that if you lock up money on Kerley or players like him, that money won't be available for other higher impact/talent players. If Richardson and Milliner won't be effected, some other Jet or some quality free agent cornerback/WR/etc might be. I also think it's kinda risky to do these kinds of precise calculations right now, since obviously we don't know how much exactly Kerley will want, what offers he will get from other teams, as well as how much money Wilkerson, Harrison, etc will get, so I am keeping it general. Cumberland is getting paid 1.2 million a year. Willie Colon has a 1 year, 2 million dollar deal. Pace, despite just having had a 10 sack season, got a 2 year deal worth 2.5 million a year. I wouldn't mind having Kerley for that kind of money, and like I said earlier, I am even somewhat open to resigning him for 3 mil or so. But I think he will get offered a much better deal by other teams. We'll see.
and aren't you the whiney little boy that had to make a whole thread about being called a homer? lol, you're the last person that should be telling someone on here to relax
I actually think we will see those numbers from him this year. 70 catches for 900+ yards and 6 tds. I think Kerley benefits the most (other than Geno) from the added talent on offense.
That's not what I did. If that's what you got from it then your logic is just as fault as I thought it was. Now can we please go back to debating which 4th round WR will be better before either of them have played a single snap in the NFL?
The debate is over, I made my points. you clearly would rather troll my posts and pretend all 4th round picks are created equal.
You've missed it, yet again. I never said all 4th round picks are created equal. I said (not literally, which I guess I should have) it's kind of foolish to assume you know how one guy who was drafted in the 4th round will perform compared to another guy drafted in the 4th round when they haven't played a single snap.
It's only foolish if you don't know anything about the players being discussed, just like it's foolish to drive if you don't know how to. Just because you don't know how to drive doesn't make it foolish for everyone else to. I'm entitled to have an opinion of which prospect is better and I provided an educated reason as to why so you can just go take a hike if that's the broken record you're going to keep spinning. If you want to make a case why Saunders is at least equal to Ellington than be my guest but the fact is you can't because Ellington is a superior prospect in every way.
those that are concerned about using the savings from a kerley extension somewhere else down the line need to consider the 89% in cash rule we need to spend 89% of the cap in cash over four years (2012-2015) ... last year we didnt come close to that number due to a ton of dead money and this year we wont come close due to dead money and a ton of cap space that means we have a lot of spending to do over the next two years and im sure idzik would rather use those resources on our homegrown talent rather than buying mercenaries in FA
Not that I think the Jets scouts shouldn't be questioned, hardly, but if Ellington is in fact the superior prospect in every way what do you think caused the Jets to pass him up? Does Ellington have some character issues or a -1 on the wonderlic or something?
I don't get the hate for Saunders, he's just as good as Ellington in my opinion (2 completely different players). Saunders plays bigger then his frame. I remember a lot of negatives in Ellington's game. Passion for football, doesn't run all the routes in the route tree. Saunders also has punt return ability ala Desean Jackson as well.
I can answer since I followed Ellington's college career closely. I don't believe he has character issues, and I didn't really pay attention to his combine scores but Ellington is a little raw, new to the WR position /football which might have caused him to drop. Some might see that as a knock on him, some might be encouraged by the fact that he's still developing.. I think that is a matter of perspective. I also wouldn't be surprised if he didn't measure well. He's kind of an overachiever. He doesn't wow you athletically, not slow but not great burst, and he's kind of small (bigger than saunders though of course) but he has great hands and is very reliable in the passing game despite his size. A lot of organizations including the Jets could've passed on him because of the way he plays as well. He's almost a possession WR, in an era where teams are moving away from those type of WRs. I don't know of the Jets thinking and I personally don't think this was the right decision if it was indeed their thoughts, but I could see them thinking that Saunders is quicker and more explosive, while he's smaller and maybe not as good of a WR overall, he has a higher upside and can contribute at the very least in special teams right away.
more proven as a return man. maybe not as raw a player overall as ellington. to me these would be negligible in the face of everything else Ellington offers, but we can only assume jets FO valued them more and/or undervalued ellington as a whole.
don't know where you are getting the passion for football part. I actually believe the opposite. He was recruited to be the star PG at South Carolina, solely dedicated to basketball but they couldn't keep him off the football field he loved it so much.
Prior to the draft, if you look at any scouting report. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1852857/bruce-ellington http://49erslife.com/bruce-ellington-complete-breakdown/ Basketball was his first love, if he's not happy on the field he could easily bolt go overseas and make plenty of cash playing PG. NY Media could do that to you if you aren't playing up to standards.
The guy practically begged Spurrier for a shot on the football team (of which the local media gave spurrier a lot of criticism for "stealing" him away from the b ball program), he volunteered to miss half seasons of basketball for football, he decided to enter the NFL draft a year early, knowing that meant the end of his basketball career... and yet people are questioning his passion for football? Those are crazy criticisms IMO
I'm going by what I've heard and Scouts reactions on this guy. As far as I am concerned his basketball career is not yet over. He was a decent player in college - as I said before he could easily bolt and go overseas if he wanted to.
If he wanted to do that he wouldn't have quit basketball early to enter the draft. I'm sorry but that's a ridiculous worry. I understand it might not be completely your opinion - just going by what scouts and bloggers say, but thats crazy talk.
