Rex says a lot of crazy stuff but this isn't one of those statements. The opposite saying that it's possible for Vick to start is saying that he has no chance to start. I would be more shocked if Rex said in May that Vick has no chance to start.
That is absolutely BS. I remember that year they were VERY quiet about who the starter would be. They refused to answer the question and dodged it in every press conference. They were deliberately quiet about that and the media absolutely hated it. Rex never proclaimed Sanchez as the starter before 2013. Fans just assumed it because he put up slightly better preseason stats, torching Jacksonville, while Geno barely had enough live snaps to demonstrate his full ability and struggled vs the Giants.

But the more Vick talked to reporters on Thursday, the more he made it sound like he was going to be No. 2 on the depth chart come September, barring something dramatic. "It's still tough right now—I won't lie," Vick said. "Deep down, you always want to be a starter, you always feel like you're a starter, and that's just the competitive nature in me. Hopefully, that opportunity will come again one day. I've just got to keep working for it." Asked if he and Smith were to perform equally in training camp if he expected Smith to be named the starter, Vick said, "Yeah, I would assume that Geno would be the starter." Vick's not the only Jets player talking this way. Wide receiver David Nelson told ESPN New York's Rich Cimini he was approaching things as though Smith were the starter. And tight end Jeff Cumberland also said it feels like Smith is the No. 1 QB—at least for now. "That's the way it's been so far—Geno's the starter, Vick's the backup," Cumberland said. "How it goes through the season, that's on the coaches to figure out."
Off season lasts forever. Look the kid closed out the season superbly, he won 8 games as a rookie (including against the Pats, New Orleans, and ending Miami bid at playoffs). It should be his name as #1, until someone else proves they are better; big news.
If Geno gets credit for the New Orleans win, in which he practically watched, then as a fan I should get credit too. I drank more beers than he had completed passes!
I think that's how it should be. For Vick to win the starting job, he should have to demonstrate a clearly and undeniably superior level of overall performance and consistency throughout camp and the preseason over Smith. The CS will closely monitor and document how they each execute the playbook in both qualitative and quantitative terms so they can precisely evaluate every aspect of their respective performances (including but not limited to their knowledge/understanding of the system, leadership and how well the players gel and respond to each of them) so a clear-eyed and objective comparison between the two can be generated on a daily basis and tracked accordingly going forward. One of the two may very well start out ahead only to be surpassed by the other over the course of camp/preseason. I would imagine (or at least hope) that the better choice will an easy determination to make in minds of the CS and that the final choice will reflect a unanimous consensus on behalf of all the coaches and players alike.
The Geno-Sanchez competition was wide open. The only time where it looked like there was a clear winner was late in the Giants game after Geno had played terribly all game. Then it looked like Sanchez would win by default. Then Sanchez came in and got hurt, so that notion was erased.
It was as wide open as the QB competition between Geno and myself. Geno just stunk it up so badly that game that Rex threw sancho to the wolves that game.
Sure. In the half hour or so during the 3rd quarter of the Giants game after Geno had sucked and before Sanchez came in, sure, Sanchez appeared the clear winner. Before that, the competition could have swung either way.
Seems like Vick is saying this to keep media from focusing on a QB controversy similar to past 2 years but no way is Vick leaving $1mm in bonuses on the table this year without a fight. Also, what is Idzik's mantra - competition except at most important position? Seems hypocritical especially given how things have turned out at Idzik's former eam.
