The Jets haven't proven anything as far as winning SBs.. so they don't belong on that list with Balt, Seattle and the Giants. They don't deserve to be there with those recent SB champions.

I can't speak to your personal preferences as to the type of teams you enjoy watching, so I won't address that second paragraph.

The only thing I'll say about Seattle is that every team fans in every city with a shitty offense is comparing themselves to Seattle now. I was in Cleveland for work listening to sports radio there and they were talking about how they have similarities to Seattle.. Same thing in Buffalo when I was there right after the Super Bowl.. and god knows Jets fans have been saying the same thing on here.

A shitty offense and a better defense does NOT equal the Seattle model. All that does is underrate the Seattle offense and team in general. It's like saying my old chevy cavalier is similar to that awesome ferrari because we both have missing headlights.

I do get annoyed when people try to equate Idzik to the Seattle model, and every year you have radio personalities and fans wanting to copycat the success model or wanting teams to find the next so-and-so.

I don't think the Jets compare that closely to the Seahawks, although I like the way they are respecting the draft.

The Jets haven't prioritized the QB and WR positions as much as I would like, they have paid far more attention to the RB position, and that has worked for teams like the Ravens in years past, though only for short term success.

It's a tough road unless one or two of the three late round WR prospects pans out, and I'll admit that it's a gamble, but he hedged those gambles with a wildman receiving TE, so I'm not going to shitcan the idea of success just yet. Same with corner. They hedged their mid and late round cb prospects by grabbing a top tier safety early this year.

Idzik looks from the outside to be a conservative guy, but if you really look at it closely, he's a gambler at heart. A smart one.

If his gamble pays off, I think you'll be singing a very different tune in six months.

I wanted Rex fired the night he threw Sanchez to the wolves against the Giants. One of the worst moves I have ever seen, even if you like Sanchez or not. Inexcusable and being fired that night would have been totally fine with me. Luckily for Rex, 99% of the organization and fans didn't like Mark anyway, so it was overlooked by many. After that, he took a terrible roster with a lost rookie QB to an 8-8 record. No one can dispute how impressive that is. Rex did a great job last year.

The fact that the Jets HAVE put so much talent on the D side is probably the best reason to keep Rex around to put it all to good use. Can you imagine Idzik firing Rex and bringing in Brian Shottenhiemer to run the team?

Every champion is always copied. The Jets are definitely in the mold of the last 2 champions in that they are defense-first teams and that's the identity.

I disagree that the Jets don't compare to the Seahawks.

Both put a high premium on draft picks to build competition throughout the depth chart.

Both went with a veteran QB competing with a rookie day 2 pick to play quarterback.

Both used a mid-round pick to acquire what they perceived to be an undervalued running back (Lynch/Ivory).

Both spent big money on getting a top receiver in FA (Rice/Decker).

Both are defense-first teams that rely on dominant physicality.

Obviously, the Jets aren't at that level talent-wise, but clearly the Jets are on the Seattle path (or Baltimore path, which isn't that different).

I agree the path they are taking is in the Baltimore and Seattle mode.
It didn't happen overnight for either of those teams, especially Balt. But they consistently put a competitive team out there, and eventually got over the hump.
The difference between the teams is that Balt and Seattle have emphasized the draft more, and have done a way better job on those picks.

There is no need to change philosophy or coaches. I'm looking to Idzik to stay the course, while improving our team by drafting quality players.
time will tell on the draft picks. If they start hitting, i think we'll be entering the next phase, which is consistent playoff contender.
Then keep drafting well within this team dynamic, and it might just be our turn to get over that hump.

I feel good about the direction. We've got a lot riding on Idzik to do his part. If he ends up struggling to find quality in the draft, the whole thing could blow up and reset with some new and opposite approach (aka wheel spinning)

I think the Jets are definitely modeled after Seattle, their just not as talented.

Jets and Seattle both took a mid round QB to compliment a powerful running game. But, Russell Wilson limits turnovers and Geno doesn't. And as much as I like Ivory, he isn't as good as Lynch, he actually seems like a poor man's Lynch. Seattle has better receivers, but their certainly not world beaters. Instead of that bonafide superstar, they have a stable of reliable players.

Seattle has put a lot of effort into their legendary secondary. In Idzik's two seasons, the Jets have put a lot of effort into building up their secondary. A first and a third into CB's and a first into a safety. Jets have the better line, while Seattle has the better linebackers.

Obviously the Jets aren't nearly as good, but they are definitely trying to build the team in the Seattle mold. I'm a big fan of what they are doing right now.

If you told me Rex would be our coach for the next 10 years, I would be ecstatic. I have all the faith in the world in Rex. It's one thing having a great coach like Rex, it's another thing having a coach that players absolutely LOVE to play for.

You make a good argument, let me point more comparisons:

Seattle hired a new GM after Carroll was hired, Ruskell fired, Schneider in. It took 5 years for the Jets to figure out they had the wrong decision maker in the FO.

Only 3 Seahawk remain from the initial Carroll/Schneider draft.

The majority of draft picks weigh offense early and defense late from 2010 until 2013. Jets under Idzik are the opposite.

SEA made 8 draft trades and 8 players trades between 2011 and 2013. Idzik hasn't even attempted to keep that feverish pace.

SEA in 2011 signed a sad sack Tarvaris Jackson and traded a 3rd for Charlie Whitehurst a couple of years before the favorable QB comparison you mention.

There's more to the argument than favorable comparisons.

The defense under Rex is way overrated and I don't want him for another ten years unless he wins. How many 3rd and longs and big plays did his D give up last year and previous years. Plus look at the top draft picks he's had to work with. I'm tired of hearing Rex talk about his defense and throw out meaningless stats. What about Ws and Ls. I'm sure Woody has a lot to do with keeping Rex but on the surface it seems Rex and Idzik work well together and it doesn't look like Idzik wants to fire him just to bring in his own man. Another year with no playoffs Rex has to go.

He blitzes when he shouldn't blitz. It's so predictable that other teams wait for it and it's one of the big reasons for ineffectiveness on 3rd and long. How many times have you seen a guy completely open on a 3rd down play. A lot! There's poor communication on the D (which even the players admit) which has led to breakdowns. No one says the defense isn't good. He's got the talent for Christ's sake he's has all of the draft picks. Kotite could coach those guys and just as good.

There are different types of QBs in the NFL, a few that dominate year in, year out like Peyton, Brady, Rodgers, and Brees, and some others who don't play that well consistently but can turn it up when it counts. That's why I would disagree with your description of them as " a good enough" QB. The two superbowls that the Giants won, Eli was the best QB in the playoffs, outplaying Rodgers, Ryan and Brady. When the Ravens won, Flacco had maybe the best postseason of any QB in the history of the NFL. Russell Wilson played very well this season, even if his stats weren't flashy, and reminded me of Tom Brady early on, when Brady also played more of a game manager type role. I would not be surprised if Wilson ends up going into the Hall of Fame when all is said and done. That's why I think you still need way more than a good enough QB to win the big one.

However, you are correct in that defense is also very important. Lately, the passing game has been all the rage, but as the playoffs clearly show, teams with dominant offenses and crappy defenses tend to fare poorly. So in the end, you need both a strong defense and a QB capable of playing really well.

You say wins and losses but don't bother mentioning that they had a wildly inaccurate green rookie QB and still won 8 games, a few against New England, Atlanta and New Orleans.

I was one of the people dogging Idzik early on, but I have to admit I like what he doing over all. The only thing I wished Idzik done was sign DRC. If we had DRC I think this D could be great.

I'm not even sure trying to follow the Seattle model is the practical decision. They had some unbelieveable luck with late round draft picks, that's why they are loaded. Good luck Trying to replicate that!!

That's sort of where I have been going. There's no model that any coach has followed point by point that just brought them to success.

Some of the Walsh guys followed his blueprint, but ultimately made their own luck and created their own blueprints. There was the influence of Walsh, but not that exact model that got them there.

Smart GM/HC combos can draw from the past but ultimately if they are successful, they become their own entity through fate and discipline.

Admire the way that Seattle became successful. Draw from it. Trying to replicate it is a fool's errand.
