I never disliked Sam for being gay but if I keep hearing about how he's gay I'm going to start to despise him.
That's 2 things you've said today that I completely agree with. The world must be coming to an end. Michael Sam isn't the first gay NFL player and certainly won't the last. Yeah, he's the first "openly gay" player to declare it before the draft, but I think the media is blowing it out of proportion as usual with anything that has to do with race, religion or preference. They are trying to champion his sexuality and interview all the coaches about how they decided to pick him and all that stuff, pretending that his sexuality is more important than his ability to play football. This type of stuff will only be big news as long as the media continues to point these things out, just as they do with race and everything else. If we are truly a tolerant society, the media will stop acting like sexuality matters. It's a far better example to set than to turn every athlete that comes out of the closet into a huge media spectacle. I don't care whether an athlete or anybody else in the world is gay. It's a non issue to me and it should be the same to the media and others. But since they are parasites that feed on polarizing views, they take the low road, yet again while acting like they are taking the high road. They are quite crafty at doing that. I haven't seen a 6th or 7th round pick get this much attention in a looooong time.
You can call me a homophobe all you want, I don't care, but showing him kissing his boyfriend was too much,IMO. If it makes me homophobic in this day an age to say that then whatever. I'd just like to keep football about football. I agree that ESPNs coverage of this has been fuckin annoying. I got nothin against the kid, good luck in the nfl and all that. But let's treat him like a defensive lineman not a fuckin influential social figure because he's not (and I'm not even sure he wants to be)
This is pretty much what I think of this as well. I don't care if he's gay or not, but I am sick of going to every damn news website and seeing that as the headline story. They have already forgotten about the first round, they never cared about 100+ players who also got selected on Saturday (that should make them feel good, right?), it's all about this 7th round pick... Now I wonder if the Rams even dare cut him like they do with all other players who are not good enough to be on the roster.
They have shown draftees kissing ladies in the past. I don't think espn did anything wrong by showing that. I was actually watching on NFLN. They showed the kiss too. Your problem might be in watching espn. Do not watch sports channels unless live sports are on and you will rarely be annoyed by these kinds of stories.
Would not surprise me if Sam proves to be poor during OTAs, minicamp, pre-season then they will dump him on the practice squad for next season and then cut him after then
There is a reason he dropped to the end of the 7th round -- he was apparently terrible in his workouts. not underwhelming, but so bad that teams couldn't simply ignore it and defer to his tapes. from what I've read he is too small and too slow. The Rams have the best of both worlds in drafting him -- the good press in doing so and the ability to jettison him without complaint if he fails to make the team.
I dont really follow the combine or pro days much, but this doesn't surprise me at all. In that picture of him in the pink polo shirt he looks completely fat and out of shape for an NFL linebacker
Sam is in a win win position, either he gets an nfl contract and spends years afterwards on the tv circut as the first openly gay nfl player, or he gets cut and ends up on the tv circuit as the player rejected by the homophobic nfl. Either way when its all done there is a one on one sit down with Oprah waiting.
call me naive but the way i look at it as the drafting of a gay football player, to me, is the drafting of a happy football player....and nothing more.
I don't think so, if he can't cut it in the NFL he'll be a nobody because ESPN will be hyping up something new like the first player who openly collects Pokemon cards
You know the more I read/see this stuff the more I become a believer that there's indeed a gay mafia of some sort http://www.realclearpolitics.com/vi...fia_if_you_cross_them_you_do_get_whacked.html Do you think there's a chance that if the Rams cut him, then the head coach, GM, or owner gets "whacked"?
yup, cross the gay mafia and you get whacked...OFF!!! because, you know, all homosexuals are sex obsessed deviants. get it? get it? you don't get whacked, you get whacked off. as in masturbated. hahahahah. ugghhhh.
He's absolutely an influential social figure whether he wants to be or not. He's the first openly gay player in a sport that has never had one. It shows gay teens that this door is open to them. A common argument is that people don't care about his sexuality. Well, if that were truly the case, he should be able to be open about having a boyfriend if he wants, just like a man could with a girlfriend. Yet judging by the reaction here, that's clearly not the case. I doubt you'd have an issue if he were kissing a girl instead. It shouldn't be a big deal, and it won't be someday, but for now it is. Not to mention, Sam was a big deal when he came out, no one cared again til Saturday, and no one will care again until training camp. If it weren't a big deal, Kerry Rhodes would have been in the NFL last season.
