I'll pay more attention to this story when we find out more about his fake, dead, online boyfriend.

I thought it was pretty fucking annoying that this story got so much coverage yesterday. The draft is the one NFL event to look forward to in a big gap in the offseason and I felt like all I heard about yesterday was some gay dude getting drafted. I don't give a shit who anyone getting drafted has sex with. I could not care less!

I thought post #6 was just a joke, and thought it was hilarious actually. I didn't know the guy was being ignorant. That's too bad.

I watched the video of his reaction to being drafted twice. It was quite amazing indeed.

When I got up, and it was the last round, I was hoping we could have gotten Rex, and Sheldon to get him here as an UDFA. Oh well.

Yeah, Falco21 is taking some of these responses the wrong way. The guys who could care less about him being gay are the ones who have it right. It is news, but it shouldn't be. He is an NFL player. He is a good football player. That is all that matters. The Rams felt he had 7th round talent and he was taken there. That simple. It is still a big moment for that community though, because some walls still haven't been knocked down, even though they shouldn't have been put up in the beginning.

It was annoying though. I was at work last night, and listened to CBS sports radio the whole time, only to hear the same story all night. Not that I had a problem with it, just wish I heard more actual draft coverage.

Hey TDK I love your sig about how you were 18th lol

I think it is a big step for the league and hopefully some of the more ignorant fans who think all gay men are overly feminine.

That being said: I really hope they shut up about it now and just focus on football.

You are both clearly morons. Scott Norton was an openly gay athlete a couple years before Collins AND he kissed his boyfriend on live, national TV.

Are you always proud to witness history or is that only when it involves gays? Proud to witness history - what an awkward statement.

I think now we must take the next step.
There are still a lot of closet homophobes. I say we must make sure those who claim they don't hate gays must prove it beyond reasonable doubt. Monthly.

Everyone who follows sports knows that gay athletes are not a new thing (Navratilova says hi), but in the NFL, the man's man sport, where there really could have been legitimate concerns about someone like this being black-balled in a locker room, it's a story. Maybe it's not worthy of wall-to-wall coverage, but neither was Tebow (or Johnny Football if you ask me). And the more coverage this gets in the short term, the more likely that when the NEXT openly gay NFL player is drafted it is no longer a story. That's kind of the point in my mind, to make sure people get that it shouldn't be an issue.

I very rarely call people out directly, but seriously, it's a free country, if you're opinion is that you don't like gay people, then fine - but own it. Don't couch it with a half-assed double negative and then blame it on the coverage. I was on the draft pages all weekend, and you've been bitching about Sam getting drafted, completely off-topic and unprovoked, since the second round (ie making it a story when it wasn't). The wonderful thing about having a beef with the liberal media is that the liberal media comes with an off button. Ignorant people, sadly, do not.

He was SEC defensive player of the year, he deserved to get drafted. But to an extent I agree about your last sentence.

They are humans just like us, I hate how they make it a HUGE deal, let Sam breathe.

Sam the man worked his tail off to realize his dream of playing in the NFL and he's apparently on his way to accomplishing that goal - good for him.

That said, remember Ben Dreith's call where he mistakenly blamed a Mark Gastineau personal foul penalty on Marty Lyons? Now imagine a ref making this same call on Michael Sam -- I wonder how the announcers would handle it-lol:

"He's giving him 'the business' down there !"

Next up, making "the rounds" : Katie Couric, Matt Lauer, Rachael Maddow, Oprah and The View, etc…

This pretty much exactly. It has nothing to do with homophobia at all. It has to do with these networks, and ESPN is the biggest offender, pushing their agenda ever since this guy came out. The entire fuckin broadcast was "Whos gonna draft Sam" with the undertone that if he wasn't then the NFL is homophobic. Just like with Jason Collins the spin was that the NBA was homophobic before the Nets finally signed him. What do both these guys have in common? Neither of them are players that teams feel can help them win games. It's been rumored that Aaron Rodgers is gay for years. Do you think the Packers would cut Aaron Rodgers or the players would care if that were true? Of course not because he's arguably the best QB in the league. This homophobia in sports stuff is a self fulfilling prophecy because we've never had a really great player come out.

why is his kissing of his boyfriend an f'in highlight on ESPN?

    [IMG] [IMG]
Cameraman zooming in while his bf massages his muscle and then him force feeding him cake with a kiss... the f is this..?

Disney/ABC stay on some gay shit. And is dude adopted? Not one black person next to him in the video.

I use to laugh when people scream "gay agenda" but you gotta question all these insane amount of force feeding the media/hollywood has been doing when it comes to gays.

You can't say this stuff anymore because the homophobe police come down on you hard. ESPN has been absolutely insufferable with this story since the guy came out. And it would be one thing if the guy was a projected first or second round pick...he went in the last round for christsakes.

It is news due to homophobia. The people who dislike Sam for being gay are the reason this story is a hot topic.

No way man, it's news because ESPN needs filler and hype 24/7. Haven't heard anyone say they dislike this kid, this is such a non story it's not even funny

Congrats to Michael Sam, regardless of how we all think homosexuality is widely accepted in America, it's just not. Many have accepted it, but I'd still guess a large portion of America does not and it has less to do with ignorance than the way people were raised, the culture they grew up in.

This is a pretty significant step regardless of the coverage. Gays have not been truthfully widely accepted and only marginally accepted in the last 20 years. It's not quite oppression by society but rather suppression by that community.

Happy for him and hopefully at this point we can judge him on his ability to play football and no longer on his lifestyle.

Not sure I get the outrage at the coverage, seems like it was pretty topical given the lack of "story lines" in round 6 and 7 (were you more enthrall end with the ad nauseum SEC QB story?) and will now die down.

This is what you get when you stretch the draft out over 3 days. If Goodell succeeds in stretching it out over 7 days or weeks, we're going to be hearing stories about players toe fungus or their twitter feeds.
