Hill is still a developmental guy. 4th round picks make the team about 99% of the time. That leaves hill, Ford, nelson and any other receiver we add fighting for probably two spots if we keep 6 receivers on the roster.
I'm not saying the 2 4th rounders will be cut. I'm saying the 6 we keep will be Decker, Kerley, Hill, Nelson, Evans, and Saunders. Salas, Ford, and Gates will be cuts.
I see it the same way. this is a make or break year for Stephen Hill. don't see Saunders or Evans starting for us.
Maybe. Idzik brought in Ford, he wasn't here for Hill. Ford can also play special teams. I think that gives Ford a better chance.
Ford was returner insurance. Idzik cut guys he signed in 2013 FA in 2013 training camp when he drafted guys who could do the same thing.
I can't believe how down on Ford a lot of you guys are. I've seen some serious flashes of greatness from him when he was in Oakland (and healthy). I know he's not a starting caliber wr but he could be a really solid 4th wr and slot guy for us. Not to mention he is a beast kick/punt returner.
I think this is 100% on the money. Outside shot that Salas or Ford stick around and Saunders or Evans start on practice squad. That is an outside shot. There is also a chance one of the 6 clear faves to make s roster blows out a knee or something. Gates is so gone. He's done Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk
I agree with you that Ford, when he's healthy, has shown some serious flashes. I think if its between Ford and Hill for a roster spot, then if Ford's healthy I say its Ford. After all, you only get to play the bills twice a year and Hill seems to disappear against everyone else. The fact of the matter is that Hill is at best wr 5 now - Decker, Kerley, Ford and Nelson are all better right now. I also think wr #2 is Ford's job to lose. Its possible that he could lose it to Hill, if Hill seriously improves, but he needs to learn how to play against press coverage, his route running needs to seriously improve, he's got to improve on his drops, he's got to go all out even when he's not the primary receiver, and he has to sell his moves. Given his years in the league he should have already developed some of these skills, but you never know. I think if Ford loses the number 2 wr slot it'll be because he's injured or one of the rookies wins the job in training camp.
Stephen Hill could still be a star, but not on the NY Jets.A guy like Peyton Manning or Drew Brees or a Brady might be able to turn him into something,or some kind of offensive guru coach. But he won't amount to squat while he is wearing Green.Sad to say I know, but we arent known for turning struggling offensive guys into stars
Listen, I hope you're right. I would love nothing more than for Hill to become a starter. But I've seen nothing from his first 2 years to indicate that. And with a third receiver just drafted, you know Hill is going to be cut unless he has a turnaround in training camp for the ages.
Hill is not over Ford right now and I don't think Nelson is either, even though I like Nelson. If Ford is healthy, he's more talented than Hill or Nelson. Kerly is better, but he's a slot receiver; while he can play on the outside, he's a better slot receiver than outside receiver and if they have him playing on the outside, then who plays the slot? Right now, I'd guess that the Jets receivers on opening day will be Decker, Kerly, Ford, Nelson & two rookies, assuming the jets carry 6 wrs. If its 5, then I think Nelson is also gone, unless only one of the rookies makes the roster - given that they've got 2 4th round picks at receiver and a 6th round pick, I think its likely that two rookies wrs make it.
Hill better work his ass off this season and be the guy the jets expected him to be when they drafted him. Idzik did not draft Hill and the coaches have been aggravated for 2 years. Decker, Kerley, Nelson, Saunders, Evans will make the team. This Quincy guy from Nebraska looks legit as well it will probably come down to these 2 for the 6th spot. Obviously we should all hope our 2nd round pick Hill wins but I wouldn't say he's the favorite.
At this point I don't care what round Hill was drafted in either. If one of these late guys come in whether it's Saunders or even an udfa like Brandon Coleman from Rutgers and blows the hats off the coaches during training camp then trade or cut Hill. We owe it to Geno and the team to put best guy on the field. If that's Hill great, if not we move on. As a side note, it's a higher class problem to have knowing we have got 8 or 9 guys at WR who are gonna be gutting it out to crack the roster vs relying on Clyde Gates to get us first downs or hoping Hill will come around
If either Hill or Kerley are one of our top 2 WRs, then Idzik did a poor job. Ideally, Hill should not be on the team and Kerley should a #3.
