Alright, I believe this isn't a Rex pick but Idzik fell in love with a kid he sees as the next Earl Thomas. Granted there isn't a lot of film on this guy, but I saw the cut ups of his 3 2013 games and a couple of his 2012 games and two things jump out at you: he is a tackling machine & he plays the ball in the air very well. The predraft machine pegged him as a slot CB, but he looks like a natural center fielder to me. Check out the measurables: E Thomas in 2010: 5'10", 203lbs 4.44 40 dash. Labeled an undersized SS with big play ability. DMcD: 5'10", 198lbs, 4.43 40 dash. Thomas is the leader of LOB, Maryland created and awarded the inaugural "Dexter McDougle Ultimate Team Player Award".
He could be a beast. He was good in college until he got injured last year. That's the main reason he fell so low.
This is actually an excellent pick. What amazes me is the amount of vitriol from some of the fan base and media. 'The Jets didn't address their secondary!!!' and then the Jets address their secondary and people are up in arms. Then they say this kid McDougle is a reach without even checking his game tape, even such a small sample size. The kid can flat out PLAY! And from everything I've read and heard if McD was not injured he'd have been a day 1 early day 2 pick. What people also aren't paying attention to, is both Pryor and McDougle (who are good friends by the way) are tenacious and fearless hitters. Receivers are going to be weary about coming over the middle against our defensive backfield. This holds true to Dmitri Patterson as well. If we can keep these guys healthy, we have a group of db's that can cover, are ball hawks and can HIT. Just go back and watch the Superbowl. The DBs manhandled the Broncos pass catchers. The receivers were shell shocked.
I'm okay with getting McDougle in round 3. Much needed position. Today's rounds 4-6 is where I believe Idzik is looking for those WRs that will be diamonds in the rough.
Good post. I loved this pick when we made it. People like to come to conclusions because they have never heard his name before. I first starting taking notice when he broke out against my Alma Matta FSU. Did a lot of reading on this kid and I gotta say, I love what I see. If he stays healthy, he could be a great addition to our young secondary.
Getting both of the safeties in the same draft would be awesome. It would be like Thomas on the 1 and Chancellor on the 5 for Seattle in 2010.
Does anyone else think we could stick him at FS? He's got that top end speed that we haven't seen from a Jets safety since that one time Braylon Edwards payed free safety for a play against the Texans in 2010. Skip to 4:56.
He dropped due to a shoulder injury early last year, there just was not the kind of tape on him to make him a high round pick. Best thing is it's not a leg injury.
Only reason fans don't like the pick is because he really didn't play much. But if he plays the whole year, he's getting picked near or possibly earlier than he did.
because all most people know are what they read on walterfootball or ESPN - oh this guy is labelled a 4th or 5th round prospect by some guy that knows nothing - clearly he is terrible and a reach - give me strength.
why would we stick him at fs when we have needs at corner and the team just spent a first round pick on a guy they are going to be looking to lead the defense eventually
Because like the OP stated he seems to be more of a ball hawking FS whereas Pryor will play an in the box thumping SS.
I'm not sure why so many peope are convinced that Pryor isn't a FS. In college he played everywhere, including deep safety in a cover 1 defense. It looked like many of his monster hits were him coming down from the deep FS and using his speed and momentum to clock the receiver or RB. He's also a ball hawk. These are the attributes you want in a FS. The jets also happen to have a guy who looks to be a pretty good in-the-box/SS in AA and he covers tight ends well. Could it be that maybe the jets see McDougle as a CB? Strange, I know, but sometimes a CB is just a CB.
^^^ Could be & I wouldn't have ANY problem with that, he seems to be an excellent CB, I was just going with what the OP presented, in either position I see this kid excelling.
if we were drafting him to FS fine, but we already got pryor to do that. there were a few CB we all had rated above him like 6' Philip gaines. That's why the generally negative reaction.
Why can't he just turn into CB2? He plays the position well and that's his experience. Maybe if it doesn't look like he's a starter you convert him to FS but I don't think it needs to be approached with that mindset from the beginning.
