We have 9 picks remaining and 3 players already selected. we have 3 picks this next round... We would be smart to trade 1 or 2 picks for picks in next year's draft. This is a pattern we should start putting in place, and something the smart franchises have been doing for a while. It allows you to move up a round by waiting a year and ensures you always have a surplus of picks at your disposal every season in order to have maximum flexibility during every years draft. drafting 12 players i think also makes little sense. there simply isnt roster room for that. i understand it increases the odds of how many rookie actually make the team, but id argue their is more benefit of stockpiling picks and ensuring you have more then the full compliment every year. IF we can move #115 for a 3rd next season or a 4th and 6th next season... or moving a 5th rounder this year for a 4th next season... i'd look into making that move
It's an interesting question. Some analysts think next year will be a particularly weak pool given the number of underclassmen that came out this year. Specifically they're looking at mid rounds and later as likely to be kind of barren with more UDFA type players available. If the Jets are trading picks it might make sense to target 2016 instead and try to get an extra round in the process. Somebody wants the #104? Then ask for their 2016 2nd rounder instead of their 2015 3rd.
I don't know if teams want to give up their 2015 3rd for someone in the 4th but I would be all ears. We need to get a 2015 3rd or better to give up our 2 4th round picks because future picks do not hold as much value as present picks.
I usually, if possible, like to acquire picks for the following year. I'm a little hesitant to do give up picks this year, since the depth of 2014's draft is excellent. We have players available in Round 4 right now, that would be Rd 2/3 prospects in an average year. I don't expect the depth of 2015's draft to be anything close to this year. Just my Take!!
This is a deep draft this year, I'd rather have and use the picks this year and have open competition for the roster spots. It's not like the Jets were a deep team coming in to the draft, aside from the Defensive line and maybe the RB and LB corps this is a very shallow team talent wise with little depth (and even some of the starters are borderline or near the end of their careers). This is a good year to build the teams depth which it desperately needs.
they dont hold as much value today. they hold MORE value next season. it is an investment, and an investment guaranteed to mature. you start doing it this year and you will ALWAYS have extra picks in the middle of the draft or higher. even if we get a 4th and a 7th next year for our 4th this year, its a worthwhile move. we saw the downside of having only 3 picks in a draft. the upside of always having 9 or 10 is huge. having the ability to trade up any year in any round is great flexibility to have. certainly worth trading 1 of our 12 picks this year
I would counter by saying having more picks in a draft that isnt as deep is even more important, as it is more likely you will need to move up a few spots to ensure you get the guys you want. having extra picks helps in that regard. i also wouldnt be opposed to trading into 2016 instead. either way, its not about using the picks next year, this is a strategy i would start employing EVERY year. we have a stockpile now, with the ability to use 1 or 2 and make sure that we always have a big stockpile.
Nope. The most talented players we're going to find with the rest of our 9 picks are with our next 2. I am not trading those. We can't trade the next 4th as it is a comp pick and I can't see someone giving us much for any of our own 5, 6 or 7 picks. Trading a 5th for a 5th and a 7th next year does not excite me. Plus next years draft is not going to be as stocked as this years. _
I don't trust Idzik with being able to monetize surplus picks into starting players. The 2014 draft is stronger than the 2015 pool, yet with a glaring need for some sort of playmaker at WR and teams like the Fins, Bills, making aggressive moves, Idzik stands pat until it is too late. Only reaches available now
Ellington is a gone who should have been a day 2 pick...he's no reach. Same with a David Yankey or Christian Jones. We should be doing backflips if we somehow got these 3 men in round 4.
I like how you are thinking however now is the time to finally work on overall team depth. Our special teams need an infusion of players because they were not good last year at all.
Jace Amaro is basically a WR in a TE body. Know what you're talking about before you post. Reaches?? There is a ton of talent available that would be 2nd or 3rd round picks in past years.
Point being there are just too many players I like in the middle of this draft to trade for a 2015 low to middle round pick in a draft that doesn't figure to be deep. If the Jets are going to make a move I'd prefer they traded their 5th and either a 6th or 7th to move back in to the 4th round, or used their 6th and 7th to move for a 2nd 5th round pick. There doesn't figure to be a lot of talent late in the draft next year. Pick when the fruits ripe.
But you don't know if the team that is giving you this pick is better than what they were last year. We could be gaining maybe a 15 pick differential and we lose out on 1 year of developing somebody for our team. Others brought up the point that this is a very deep draft as well. Its why Idzik faught to the bone with Dominik to give him the 2013 1st rounder, not 2014 1st rounder even if the 2014 1st rounder ended up becoming the better pick. If we waited for the 2014 pick, we may not have gotten Richardson who is vital to our team. And if you want to give Big Shel to us at 9, then we don't have Milliner who now serves a very, very important piece moving forward. We'd probably take Gilbert and may very well be in the position we were last year with Milliner with a rookie CB taking their lumps and bruises.
Would love this, also would start looking into a developmental QB. I like Simms and all but AJ/Murray/Zac are better than him
