Can you imagine where we'd be right now if we'd packaged picks to acquire Gordon in the Browns attempted fire sale last year? No 2nd round pick due to the trade and no WR due to the suspension.
On the topic of Lee vs Matthews: I think Lee has a real chance to be a star. I think Matthews has a chance too but probably not at the same level.
Does anyone think Lee or Matthews will even be available when we pick? I feel like Idzik needs to package our 4th round with our 3rd and move up to the beginning of the second round. I want Lee as a Jet at this point.
Ian Rapoport @RapSheet 52s The #Jets were furiously trying to trade up with the #Bucs, hoping to take WR Marqise Lee. Their fear was the #Jaguars would take him. That's what happens when you think you are smarter than everybody else.
My thoughts exactly after Philly took Mathews. Oh well they did get Amaro. Not what I wanted but still a solid pick.
Idzik: we want to move up from #49. How about we toss in a conditional 7th rounder in next year's draft? Licht (Bucs GM): (click)
Well the Bucs reportedly didn't deal with the Jets because they thought the Jets were going after their pick. Not really sure why trades up doesn't happen means Idzik thinks he's smarter than everyone else. Don't see the logical connection
In general, the media has been a little off. I think the 2nd round picks were leaking early until the Jets pick when all of a sudden nobody knew 5-10 minutes beforehand who the Jets were picking unlike the picks before them. It was pretty funny seeing that happen
Bucs GM comes off poorly here. Doesn't even negotiate at all? Silly move by him, he had something the Jets wanted and hung up on them. Nice effort on trying to make a joke though.
I don't believe this rumor. I think the Jets probably called several teams to see what the market was and decided not to give up their 3rd round pick in order to trade up for Lee. I think that was a wise move. The idea that they would have put their hopes on making a trade with the Bucs just doesn't make sense. First of all, the Bucs are likely not well-disposed to trade with the Jets right now given the Revis fiasco and secondly no team is ever going to be a lock to give up a current draft pick unless you overload the deal and whatever else the Idzik Jets might do they will never overload a deal like that.
If it's true the Jets were furiously trying to trade up for Lee, that's good news - it means Idzik is as smart as most fans think he is (and as he showed with a great draft last year). The bad news is that he wasn't willing to give up more in a trade to go up and get him. If you think the guy is a legit 1st round talent (which Idzik does, he just liked Pryor more), then trading a 3rd round pick is nothing to go up and get another 1st round player! (especially in hindsight, since he ended up reaching badly for McDougle in the 3rd!)
