If you mean the James Jones who was drafted by the Packers back in 2007 and played with them through the 2013 season, he signed a three year contract with the Raiders back in March.

I suppose it is realistic to say that picking safety in round one makes going Cb in round two less likely than if they had gone O in round one. But... I wonder what the odds are.

I guess this makes a trade for Cb more likely than a high draft pick at this point.

Or Idzik's 'upgrade CB' comments were grandstanding to placate the fans and he's planning on my idea of giving Walls a shot to prove himself and doing the best he can to upgrade everything else without making a meaningful change at CB at all until next year if it proves necessary.

I have to acknowledge that is more of a possiblity now than before last night. But that doesn't make me feel warm and fuzzy about Walls. He's going into his fourth year without cracking the starting lineup. I think we've already seen almost all of his upside. How may Cb's turn out to be good corners if they take more than three years to do so?

Walls as of today is not a good corner. it says here he probably is not going to turn into one in the future.

I don't see him ever being a pro bowler or anything if that's what you mean by good, but he had pretty limited opportunity to get in game experience during those 3 years so I don't necessarily write him off for being acceptable. I'd say he's better than 50/50 to not be a disaster, and if he has at least a 1 in 3 chance to be acceptable enough to the point that you wouldn't automatically want to replace him after next year then I'd say that's about as good of a gamble as we're going to get at this point. We KNOW that Landry is hopeless, same for Winters and Colon, same for Cumberland as a primary TE, probably the same for Stephen Hill as a starting WR. To me at least Walls has some realistic chance of stepping in and doing a competent job, and when you have too many holes to fill them all you want to take a chance on the guy who might just surprise you rather than the guys that are completely proven to be out of their depth.

Idzik probably had a decent idea that the pick would be Pryor as FA opened which sort of explains his failure to pursue Ward or Byrd, but his failure to pursue any CB might also explain his tendency to lean towards giving Walls a chance for the reasons I've described.

I don't know why you said "failure to pursue any CB..." You missed that they met with DRC and appeared to be trying to sign him when he signed with the Giants instead?

As for Walls, I am not saying I am certain he would suck as a starter. But his not being a starter in three years, especially with all the problems the Jets had last year, and Revis going down the year before, when he only got in six games, does not inspire confidence, to put it lightly. It's a big gamble especially given that Milliner is hardly a proven commodity (although HE does inspire confidence, imo).

You're right DRC slipped my mind but I guess you could argue that Idzik wasn't as motivated to sign him as he could've been if Walls weren't an option, and he could've been motivated to pursue a number of other guys including the original Cromartie if Walls wasn't an option. It's not like I'm saying the plan was 100% to build the team around Walls, just that there are about 5 positions on the team that need to be upgraded and CB2 happens to be the only one with any realistic shot of being addressed in house.

After strengthening HB and QB in FA which weren't necessarily explicit immediate needs, and upgraded WR with decker which was, then safety with Pryor which was, and hopefully 2 more day one starters at OL/TE/WR or maybe OLB today, the team could actually be very strong even this year if Walls exceeds expectations. Any subsequent additions whether it be via trade or FA after that would be icing on the cake, and could either present a safer CB option or one of the remaining positions of need depending on who becomes available.

Definitely well improved but there's still some more to be done and with 10 more picks here in the draft, I'm excited.

Dexter McDougle added. Not much known about him other than a really cool name and he tore it up before his injury. Hopefully Walls/Patterson can do the job until Dexter steps in.

I don't know the update on him. Based on talent and the Jets needs and their plethora of picks, it makes sense the Jets would have interest, though.

I don't think Idzik is going to bring in any people who are likely to cause noise in the press or get suspended at this point. He did that inadvertently with Goodson and Winslow last year and I'm guessing he didn't like what happened with those guys. Doing it with somebody you know is in trouble is less likely in my opinion.

On the CB front I think the Jets are done acquiring veteran talent unless somebody really good drops in their lap cheaply. They have like a dozen CB's at this point and may well draft another one late and that's going to be the competition in camp. If they can't find two acceptable CB's out of the guys they have now it'll be an upset.

I get that. The ONLY reason I would consider it is due to the plethora of picks today. The Jets can "waste" one or two on a trade for a veteran or a project (like Logan Thomas).

I usually hate the idea of the Jets acquiring troubled players.

Jalen Saunders added! Slot little fast guy. Jacoby Ford may not see the a regular season game in a jets jersey.
