Very good if we take Garappolo or Bortles in first 3 Rounds. Bridgewater's pro day scared me off. The Jets need a better cornerstone than Geno to build on.
Agree with most of the posts here, like this one. If the Jets go QB in round 1, I'd be very surprised, but it means they fell in love with whatever QB was there and thinks that player is a franchise quarterback. In that case, they better be right! After that, drafting a developmental QB would be a smart idea. I don't think it has to be early since this player shouldn't need to play this season barring a disaster. Get a Keith Wenning or Brett Smith or Logan Thomas with one of the 6th round compensatories to develop for a year and see what we have.
That's my problem. There are question marks about all of those guys, none of them are a sure thing. It would probably be safer to just draft a developmental guy like you said with a 6th rounder and have them sit behind Geno and Vick and see where they are next year. Get some legit weapons for Geno/Vick and see what happens. Not much point in getting another QB who still doesn't have great weapons to work with. Obviously they will address the offensive side of the ball in the draft but maybe whoever we get won't be as good as who we could have got at 18.
Me too but is it because I wouldn't waste another second on a unproven QB? Or because you like Boyd or Savage?
I, like others, am not sold on smith but I don't think we should ignore the non QB positional talent in this draft - especially in rounds 1-3...... How much better are these guys going to be than geno. Not much.
I wouldn't be upset over any of the 4 1st rounders people have talked about. I think the better move is probably to go with Smith-Vick this year but I don't know how the Jets evaluate Geno at this point and if they aren't high on him then picking one of the prime QB's in the 1st round might be a good move. I don't expect it but I wouldn't be surprised or upset if it happened.
This is what I was saying, unless it's great value and we are absolutely sure that the QB we bring in is the future and Geno is not we should draft elsewhere.
That's the point though - if the Jets select a QB in the 1st round we know for sure they're convinced he's the THE GUY, and not just someone who presented solid value or "has a chance". They're not going to do it otherwise. It kind of reminds me of them taking Sheldon last year - so many people were unhappy with another DL, and more specifically that it was Richardson when "the top two elite guys", Star Lotulelei and Sharrif Floyd were both still on the board.
Seattle did this exactly when Idzik was with them. They already had signed Matt Flynn to a QB contract but they drafted some guy named Russel Wilson. They took another QB and ignored their "needs" or possible high profile picks. The Jets will start to load up on talent at various key positions. Could be QB,OL,DL, ...this is why we all don't know the pick. I do hope they take a WR and CB at some point. Idzik's model seems to resemble BPA.
I agree with this line of thinking. By letting Geno get all the starts last year, the team should really have a good idea what they think of him. If Geno shit the bed the entire year, things would have been far easier to move on. However, he did finish with some momentum, but was it enough to make him a no brainer as the 2014 starter? Doesn't appear the team thinks so, since they dropped 7$ mil on Vick to be there as well. Call it due diligence, but they could have gotten someone else to backup if they were 100% sold. In 2013, Geno fell into their laps in the 2nd, and Idzik showed he has a little gambler in him. If Geno had been taken prior to that pick in the 2nd, I don't get the impression they would have jumped on another QB at that point (or in round 3). That said, if the right guy falls to 18, that gambler might show his head once again. BUT, it would have to be someone that blows their doors off and they can't believe he made it to 18. So if they grab someone at 18, I wouldn't be upset. That would make it evident to me they feel this QB can be better than Geno. Based on Geno's performance the last 4 games, I don't see the same thing happening in the 2nd round or 3rd round. In my opinion, a QB might happen rounds 4-7. My prediction QB round 4 - Aaron Murray (I'm biased, I know), Boyd, Mettenberger (falls based on injury questions) round 5 - Thomas, McCarron (Get this feeling he is going to fall to late 4th or early 5th) round 6 - Morris, Fales, Wenning round 7 - Brett Smith, Shaw
Thomas it is I think if they take one in the later rounds. Pretty sure they went to his pro day and had him in for a visit. He has all the tools to be a good NFL QB just needs a lot of work.
Manziel is the only QB I could see the Jets taking tonight..but I dont think he's going to fall out of the top 10. Bridgewater might go late tonight to a team where he could sit for 2 years behind a franchise QB. That would probably be the best thing for him. They will most likely go QB somewhere in the mid rounds though. Murray is a guy I could see being drafted by us in the 4th. Fales in the 6th would be some great value too.
Am I the only one to think McCarron fits Jets O better than Geno does? [But I would want him with any of the 4th round pick, no higher.]
So you ignore three years of film on his excellent play at QB because of one 2 hour workout in shorts? Wow.
Evidently. Sorry, but I don't think McCarron fits at all. I don't like him at all. I don't want him with a comp pick in the 6th round. I'd take about any other QB in the draft over him. He's nothing more than a game manager. He can't handle pressure, isn't that mobile, and I just don't like his game.
He certainly fits the Rex mold of what a QB should be. I hate using "game manager", that whole moniker makes me cringe. I think he's better than that. He's been big in games when needed, and good when he didn't need to shine. I like the prospect of Garoppolo, but I didn't bother putting him in my list since I don't feel he will be there where I think the Jets would grab a QB (and there are more pressing needs at 18).
Yeah ... really did not like McCarron's performance at the bowl game. No senior bowl, no throwing at the combine. I think he's a fraud.
He got battered by Oklahoma, but he's been good. If he gets drafted, I could see him having a career as a good backup. Realistically, that is what you get when you draft QBs that late. They hardly ever get "developed" to be starters.
