I'm starting to believe that also. Idzik can have his crew be as tight lipped as possible but he can't control other teams.
I believe the Jets are looking at all sorts of trades. I don't think they're trading up for Beckham. If they trade up, I think they're targeting Watkins or Evans if they drop. I could also see a trade for a veteran. I'd prefer to see a trade for a veteran CB, particularly considering the murderer's row of passing offenses the Jets face early in the season.
Given the aftermath of the hysteria brought on by Idzik methodical and highly thorough approach to building the team, you'd think the fanbase would recognize this. http://www.newyorkjets.com/news/art...or-Draft/056ddafd-1822-4232-a109-3bbdccc0e1f1 "I'll say this about John — he affects a lot of different areas in this building, but when he's with your group, you think that's the most important thing he's got going on," Bradway said. "He's thorough, he's detailed. Sometimes he might even get a little impatient. But the most important thing we have going on now is to get that draft board right, and he's got the ability to do that." "John's brought things together," said Bauer. "We listen to everybody. Everybody has a voice. No stone's left unturned." Idzik is taking the temperature of other teams regarding their draft position - likely every single team in the league. He has a tier of players that they'd trade up for, and he's gauging the value of those players against the cost to the Jets long-term plan. It's the opposite of a reactionary trade-up; he's staying at 18 unless he can acquire a player of greater value than the cost to move up to get him. Idzik is checking in everywhere so he has as much possible data on both the cost of doing business and the value of his 12 picks around the league. It's encouraging.
Articles like this make me believe we made such a genius move hiring Idzik. This draft is very telling. I can't wait until tomorrow night.
Adam Schefter @AdamSchefter 1m Teams that have inquired about trading UP include DET, NYJ, CLEV (from 26), SF, HOU (from round 2 into 1), ATL (from round 2 into 1). Add Schefter to the list saying the Jets are trying to move up.
I think it's more like where there's smoke there's screens being put in place. Who have the Jets been linked most heavily with the last 3 weeks? OBJr. Same for the Steelers. Who were both teams being linked too before the screens started? Marqise Lee. I think Lee gets taken by the Steelers on the 15 and leaves the Jets disappointed.
You can't get there without asking and you don't ask unless that's what you want to do, what would be the point?
Due diligence. If someone we grade out as top 6 or 7 is sitting in the early teens, it would be wise to have a cost estimate for sliding up a few spots. That is especially true when we have 3 4ths and 4 6ths at our disposal.
Every single team in the league wants to trade up. All of them. The point is to do it on your terms (inquiring) rather than capitulating to varying degrees with your trading partner (actively trying to move up).
Interesting Cleveland really trying to do a splash here...Do they think Jaguars are going to take Manziel? I can see the Rams trading with the Browns for #2
I'll go even further. I like it, especially if he has zero interest in trading up. Get the other teams worried, distracted about what the Jets might do and they might panic and make a mistake causing a player the Jets covet to drop. You never know, they could also find a sweetheart deal and be able to get a player they really like and think could be a difference maker. Even if neither happens, it helps prevent other teams from knowing what the Jets are gonna do and could help keep them from doing things that could hurt the Jets in the draft.
We'll see. On one hand, I really like this if it is a subterfuge. OTOH, I think he screwed the pooch in not signing a CB in FA, thus putting himself and the Jets of almost having to take a CB high. That's not smart imo, and could very easily force him to go against the BPA philosophy and reach for a CB, or worse trade up in order to get the one they think is the best fit. If Idzik takes a CB in round 1, I'm gonna think he's a moron rather than a genius and think he should be fired.
Rich Cimini @RichCimini 1m If the Jets trade places with Titans (11), they'd have to give up a 3 and two 4s, according to draft value chart. Steep. #nyj Very affordable for the right player.
Great point. I kind of see it like the Miami and Oakland deal last year....did Oakland get back the utmost value going from pick 3 to pick 12 by only getting a 2nd round pick? No. But Oakland was hungry for draft picks at that point and they were so in love with DJ Hayden that they would take him at pick 3. But if you can trade down 9 spots, pick up a top 50 pick AND get the guy you desired so much....that's win-win. Miami knew Oakland went in this draft just wanting to acquire more picks to help add to their depleted depth and talent and offered up a top 50 pick to get it done and get their pass rusher. To show how flawed that chart value system really is, Miami needed 1000 draft points to get Oakland to do the trade down....they only gave up 480. By that draft value chart, Oakland was due not just that Miami 2nd round pick but possibly a future 1st or 2nd round pick too and maybe even a later pick. However, Oakland wasn't going to get greedy and to add a top 50 pick to their ballclub....that is a slam dunk enough in itself. Not everyone will hold you at ransom in a trade up and Idzik is just exploring that as any GM should. You offer up a 3rd and 4th to move up 10 or so spots, teams will gladly take that.
Speak of the devil.....the draft value chart doesn't hold much value or substance in these trades. If the Titans want a 3rd and 4th to get the deal done in this deep draft, they will settle for less. This isn't about bending backwards to someone, its about giving you and your franchise as much ammo and chances to improve itself internally as humanly possible.
This is the way I want to feel, but I keep going back to 2013. It was widely reported that the Jets were frantically trying to trade up to draft Geno Smith, following the end of the first round and leading into Friday's second round. The Jets didn't end up trading up, but did end up drafting Geno, so the leak seems to have been correct, the hope being that Idzik didn't panic and throw away more than he was willing to for the guy he wanted to draft.
