How many #2 WR's were taken in the 1st round of the NFL draft and then became stars in the NFL? Don't confuse guys taken later in the draft with 1st rounders. Victor Cruz and Odell Beckham Jr will share nothing in common if OBJ hits it big.
He is reliable and IMO pretty explosive as well. Decker and Kerley are reliable...Lee can stretch the field.
Ok...and WR isn't a team weakness?Really?REALLY? Shouldn't you expect more from a draft than just to plug holes? I want impact players who can win one on one match-ups..not somebody that fills a hole on paper. Why do you think Beckham is jumping up draft boards if he's so mediocre? It certainly wasn't his combine.Several WR's ran faster forties& flashed just as much in workouts. It's a deep WR class..so if he's so terrible why is he moving up?
Javon Walker(Crothonso Thorpe/PK Sam),Reggie Wayne(Santana Moss),Terry Glenn(Joey Galloway),Michael Irvin(Brian Blades/Brett Perriman) But who's counting? "Star"is a very subjective word as is "#1 & #2" WR. Tape is not subjective.Getting separation from defenders is not subjective. I'll take it a step further. How many "#1 WRs" have won a super bowl since 2000? I count 2 & they are both debatable as the damage was done by WR tandems & not just one super star. St. Louis in 2000(Holt/Bruce) & Indy in 2007 (Harrison/Wayne)
Ok..then I'll rephrase it. Why is he now projected to go top 15 if he is so mediocre? Can't use the typical "Work out warrior" label...he was far from the best workout at the combine.
CB and WR are both weaknesses. First rounders are odds on, impact players. So we are in no disagreement. Look at what you just said..several WR flashed as much, ran faster. By your own reasoning, other players are better than OBJ. The difference here is who has a better agent/PR department. Remember, this is about big $$$$$$$$. That's why you get a great agent whether you are so so, good, very good, excellent player.
Mmmm not by my own admission.Beckham is considered high impact b/c of what really matters...his TAPE.I was merely defending against the common notion that he is thought highly of due to solely workouts. I would argue there is not a truly high impact corner in this draft. At least not without some serious development along the way.
I love Jason Verrett but his size definitely limits him in the match-up department & he too is raw.More of a late 1st/early 2nd value.
Too raw? That's crazy talk, he can play man coverage with every technique, hip to hip, trail, off, and he played zone as well, great ball skills, fluid hips, blinding acceleration, long arms to bat balls down, seriously what CAN'T he do?
I'm not sure what the original point of contention was but I don't know why you guys are so focused on Lee vs. Beckham. Both have HUGE concerns. Neither should be taken in the first round. Beckham is perfect physically. He looks awesome. His measureables are great. His highlight reel is sick. But he absolutely disappears against the better competition. When good teams wanted to shut him down they did. Huge red flag. Any team that is drafting him is drafting him based solely on potential due to his physical ability. He's really boom or bust because he has no history of performance. He might need a few years to develop before he hits his groove. Definitely I would not be ok with spending a first round selection on him and I really have a hard time believing that any Jet fan would ok with this. Lee was hyped as the best WR after 2012, a can't miss #1. But 2013 exposed him as what he really is - a good WR - not a star. Like Beckham, Lee's best games were against the weakest teams. Brandin Cooks is special - everybody tried to shut him down and they couldn't - he still produced. With no Robert Woods to take the heat away, Lee got shut down. He's a good athlete, his combine was decent, that's it. A good receiver is what he is. He isn't is an elite first round prospect. Michael Campanaro and Bruce Ellington are two players that are just as talented as Lee or Beckham except they can be had in the 3rd round or later. If I'm looking for a small receiver, after Cooks and Watkins, these are the two guys that I'm targeting.
Wayne and Moss were complimentary receivers and neither dominated. Same for Santonio Holmes and Tedd Ginn Jr. Javon Walker is a mistake in your list. He was number 3 as a sophomore to Snoop Minnis (the immortal) and Anquan Boldin. He was #1 as a junior and went to the draft. Anquan Boldin was #1 his senior year when he got picked in the 2nd round. Michael Irvin shouldn't be on the list at all. Nobody could see anything but Miami's #1 WR in his stay at the team. Terry Glenn was probably the best receiver in the country in 1995. 64 catches, #1 in the country in TD's and yards, #1 in the Big 10 in receptions, Biletnikoff winner.
I would be happy if Cooks were a Jet, the kid has a great attitude and he's durable - which is the negative on Lee right now. I know for a fact Mornhinweg wants him on this team (Link and quote below). and I think he has some say in this decision if it were to come down to it. http://nypost.com/2014/05/06/oregon-state-wr-feels-like-jets-are-pushing-for-me/
Let's not forget about Jordan Matthews. And does anyone like Allen Robinson in the very early 2nd? Or end of the first if we trade down? Both will be available at that time.
Yes, I really like them both, but I didn't mention them because they're different types of receivers. Cooks, Watkins, Beckham, Lee, Campanaro, Ellington I'd classify as in the small receiver category. Most of this thread has been about those types of guys. Robinson, Matthews, Latimer, Evans I'd consider big receivers. In fact, Jordan Matthews is probably my favorite receiver in this draft. He's going to be a stud. And he ran a 4.46, that's almost as fast as Beckham who ran a 4.43, so I think he could be used to streak deep just as well as about anybody else with the exception of Cooks. I'm also very high on Latimer and another big guy I like that I have heard nobody mention is Quincy Enunwa from Nebraska (he ran a 4.45 btw). cool link: http://www.nfl.com/combine/top-perf...ARD_DASH&position=QB-RB-TE-S-DL-LB-CB-OL-SPEC
You made some points in your first three paragraphs, but this last paragraph is just nuts. Campanaro is not a scab on Beckham's, Lee's or Cook's ass. He's a slow possession WR, that probably won't even make an NFL roster. Ellington's better, but still nowhere near the other's class.
I made my point. There have been plenty of very good pros within your parameters. How is it you praise Terry Glenn who had a measily 5 more receptions than Beckham?
