For all the bashing he gets on this board, there are alot of things to like. Good size, speed as well as change of direction.Corner is really the one position on the field where "on field production" matters alittle less in college. There are just so many factors to consider including scheme, competition, pass rush...of all the positions..this one typically does boil down to raw athletic ability Want an example? Dunta Robinson from about 10 years ago. People on this board felt the same way about Dunta that many feel about Roby today. Why? Well his in game performances were not that great. But he had the ideal physical skills to flourish in the NFL..and he proved to be a pretty good player, absolutely worthy of a top 15 selection. The counter to this is guys like Darqueze Dennard. Yeah he looked great on the field in that spartans system/great DL. But when yopu look at the physical skills they are simply good but not great. When it comes to press man corners..it's all about Length/Hips/recovery speed/ball skills/tackling ability. Roby fits the bill substantially better than many on here would like you to believe. Now if you wanna get on his character & all that stuff..those are legit concerns..but people are acting like this guy wouldn't be a steal in round 2.To me that is crazy talk.
Yes indeed, he is after all a defensive guru. Nothing helps a secondary more then a good pass-rush. I still would like for the Jets to get a good free safety that can cover and communicate to teammates. This will increase the # of turnovers on defense as we sucked in generating TOs. A name that has been thrown out there is DeMarcus Lawrence OLB / DE from Boise State. I would not mind a scenario, where we trade down grab DeMarcus Lawrence at the end of the first, then try and acquire Allen Robinson.
His character issues are a little alarming, but I don't think it's a deal breaker for me. He seems more of an athlete then a football player though, that worries me a little bit and he REALLY struggled and showed inconsistency. He has raw athletic ability, but I don't think he's worthy of that 2nd round. That word "raw" just reminds me of Vlad and Stephen Hill (which again would fit the 2nd round criteria for the Jets as of late). I don't like Dennard at all, I think he plays a little too physical and he's going to get burned by PI flags and holding flags all of the time.
Kurt, The bashing of Roby is what he deserves. I've seen his entire career, I'm a few miles from the Horseshoe and totally aware of his career. Great athlete, when his game is on there isn't many better. Very inconsistent, plays out of position and bites on moves. He's extremely immature, not a good work ethic, almost lazy. Questionable personal decisions, a party boy that is at the Columbus bar scene all the time. I remember you and others trying to convince me I was nuts hating on Gholston before he was drafted. I was one of the very few that wanted no part of Gladys I don't hate on Buckeyes, I call it like I see it, stay away from Roby.
He talks like somebody who didn't have an education after the 8th grade. He'll be in NYC for the first time with his mouth open looking up at the skyscrapers. My concern is that he might be out of his element in New Jersey and will require good mentorship. I have seen him play a bit. He has return ability, but he will probably be useless from scrimmage in 2014.
Not too worried about a 6th Rd pick. If he was a 1st or 2nd day pick it would be an issue. Practice squad player, we have a returner with a 1 year contract.
I would like the Jets to draft him. I wrote that here a couple months ago. He has great speed. He is the type of player worth taking a shot on.
I agree, he looked good at the combine. He was just behind Cooks in the 40 time. I had him in my mock since the Jets have shown interest.
When it comes to OSU prospects & the Big 10 I definitely respect your opinion. You were absolutely right about Gholston.Though I will say that you were very high on fellow Buckeye Mike Adams & I disagreed with you about him throughout that entire draft season. We all have our hits & misses. I'm not even high on Roby...I share the concerns about his character flaws. I'm just alittle tired of some of the draft sheep picking a new prospect to hate on every other week.People act like Roby & Benjamin aren't even worth day 3 picks. And yeah maybe they have more risk than alot of other players. But they are ranked high on many big boards for a reason..That's all I'm saying.
Roby aside...yes the Jets have missed on a few raw athletic types. But if you look at the Jets roster..it's those players w/ athletic qualities that have truthfully been missing from the roster. In other words..if guys like Ducasse/Hill worked out...this team could've performed alot differently. In this era of football you have to have a few athletes who can match-up, make plays in space & bring explosion. You can't survive under a Parcells model of 22 lunch palers anymore. So while I agree the Jets need to do a better job identifying athletes who can perform..I don't think they should shy away from them either.
Another 1st round pick on a CB is going to be tough to take. I was all for the Richardson pick last year, but most Jets fans were not. Most Jets fans will be pissed off if the Jets take C.J. Mosley in the first round. I didn't even consider him for the Jets because I figured he would go in the top 15, but I now hear he may slip. Davis is okay and Harris is slow and getting old.
I believe you, based on my respect for your opinion, on the video I've seen of him, and what I've read. Why do you think the Jets met with him 3 times? I just don't get it. It seems like too many times for it to be a smokescreen.
I totally agree with your second paragraph. That's why I could accept Gilbert, and would love to add Cooks or Beckham. I think the Jets NEED players like them.
I don't keep up with other teams, so don't know if they've had as many high profile busts or not, but regardless, I think most Jets fans are tired of the Jets' "braintrust" (and with regard to the past, I use the term lightly), thinking they are smarter than everyone else and reaching for projects and missing badly. We've had enough 1st & 2nd round busts over the history of this team for 2-3 teams, maybe more. We're tired of the hated Pats, Dolphins, Bills & Ravens winning and the Jets not winning. Speaking for myself only, that's why if a player has any real character concerns at all, I don't want him, I don't care how athletically gifted/talented he is. I wouldn't take Lyerla if he paid the Jets $10 million a year for the privilege of playing for them. I don't want Roby for the same reasons. I'm tired of the damned circus and my beloved team being a laughingstock. It's bad enough that we've had two of the worst owners in the history of all professional sports, and are probably the only professional team in the world that's NEVER had its own home. I'm fed up with clueless GMs, HCs and OCs, bad draft picks and trading away draft picks.
1st Rd pass rush, who do you suggest?? Barr is the only one that could be considered. Dee Ford would be a reach and he's a situational player that won't be on the field all 4 downs. We can agree to disagree on CB need. You have a lot more confidence in Patterson and Walls, I don't. Look at our schedule and notice the quality QBs we will be facing this year, our secondary will be in trouble. Don't have to convince me on Cooks, he's as tough as they come for his size. He's a young Santana Moss, fast, elusive and tough. I think right now Cooks is probably the leading candidate to wear Jet's green & white.
Appreciate your Comments. I really based my draft this year on the players the Jet's Mgmt. have shown interest. A few of these players aren't necessarily my selection or favorites. I based my Mock on what I believe the Jets will do, which I believe is what a mock should reflect. Too many mock drafters pick the players they like or want. I tend to go against the grain with my 1st rd pick and not pick the favorites, Cooks or Beckham. I would love Cooks or Beckham, just showing another option the Jets have on their board. I do think Fuller would be the best CB in Rex's defense, of the top 3. Fuller does everything well, he's fluid, solid tackler, and good cover CB. Gilbert is a awesome athlete, I've seen too many athletes fail and real football players be successful. Watch more detailed tape of Gilbert, he's not a physical player, he avoids contact. I rather have Dennard than Gilbert and I'm not a huge Dennard fan. I'm one of the biggest Attaouchu fans on this site and brought him up in the early fall. I just didn't draft him because the Jets haven't shown interest. Last year we showed little to no interest in Winters and we took him in rd 3, so I could be wrong. I'm a big Jarvis Landry fan, he looks the part of an NFL player. I really believe he might have a better career than OBJ. I'm not a huge Campanro fan, he will be hard pressed to make the 53 and probably a practice squad candidiate. I drafted Camp for the Idzik/Wake connection.
I only mention pass rusher ... just in case Jets get lucky and a special one becomes available. Like Mack or Barr Would love getting Teddy Bridgewater, or the best available pass catcher.... WR or TE . Just curious : if Clinton-dix or Pryor were available...as well as Fuller.. would Fuller still be your choice?
Mack isn't falling, he will be a top 3 pick. Barr may be a possibility, I just don't know where the Jets value him. Absolutely, we have more quality depth at Safety then CB. I don't value Dix and Pryor as high as most. I like Allen and have a lot of hope on Jarrett, he was neglected in Philly and Andy Reid gave up on him. Still need to pick another Safety later on. I still want us to consider Cooks or Beckham if available. BTW, Ebron's stock has taken a slight hit the past few days, questioning maturity level and his hands...slight chance he could fall to #18
