Fuller may be a good, or even great CB in the NFL, but if Idzik takes him and passes on Bridgewater, Barr, Mosley and Cooks, then more than likely I'll want him fired and will have a very hard time supporting him in anything else he does.
One point I believe Idzik will focus on, he can get another WR down the road with the incredible depth. I would have a difficult time passing on Barr. I doubt a QB is on the radar in Rd 1.
Well it depends where you are talking about. I think there is a much bigger difference between 18th and 22nd than, say, 28th and 32nd. Obviously the higher you go the more it matters (a guy ranked at 6th overall being picked 1st or 2nd overall). The kind of underlying thing I was getting at but didn't state was that if we traded down a few spots and got him then it wouldn't be so bad but if we're passing up on maybe a half dozen guys that should be ranked ahead of him I think that's too early. I agree that getting the right guy is all that matters but at the moment I don't think he's the right guy. I will admit I was totally wrong when it came to Richardson.
For Barr, I couldn't really find a spot for after Tennessee. I felt the Giants had other needs, maybe the Ravens take him but he ultimately just kept falling for me. How Manziel felt so far for me, is I feel most QB needy teams won't risk taking him. The only team you constantly hear having interest in him is Cleveland. I also a report that 12 out of 20 NFL execs said he will be a bust so that also was a factor.
I see where your coming from, but what it came down to for me is: our top two needs will be CB and WR. I don't think we will look at QB's in the first but I do think we will draft one later. The depth at receiver is far too rich to go get one in the first when the CB depth drops off after Verrett IMO. Barr is a pick Rex would love and I think he would do great here but again there are other pass rushers we can get later on. CB was a surefire need. Who knows if Patterson will stay healthy, do you want to risk Wilson and Milliner starting the season? We have to take a CB early, whereas if we take one in R3-4 we might not find a starter and instead get another depth guy.
We're only going to get one of those guys. Only Bridgewater might fall to round 2 and even then teams will be dialing up phones late Thursday evening to secure his talents. That's how I look at it....its going to only be one of those guys we're getting and if Fuller is the guy and becomes a good/great CB, then do it.
WR I could almost understand, but would still be incredibly pissed if he passed up on Cooks (or Beckham, if he's available) for a CB. I doubt QB is on the radar too, but I think that's primarily because Idzik expects that Teddy, Manziel and Carr will all be gone by pick #18. If one of them is there at #18 and he passes, then Geno better have a breakout year, or I will be as equally pissed. I'd only pass on Barr if Teddy was there, or if I was certain that Geno was gonna be an excellent franchise-type QB.
I wasn't criticizing your mock, just commenting on how I think the draft should go for the Jets. For one thing, I think Idzik will go BPA and not be swayed that much by need, and I don't see Fuller as the BPA by any means. For another, I don't see the need at CB as severe as many of you. For another, the Jets have talked to Roby 3 times, so they must be very interested in him. I would therefor be shocked if they drafted Fuller in the first. Let me hasten to say that I don't like Roby and don't want him, but I think it's likely that he will be their CB pick if he's available at #49. Finally, with regard to CB, IMO, the Jets have drafted enough 1st round CBs to last another 5-10 seasons. If Rex can't build a quality D without continually drafting 1st round CBs, then his ass should be fired imo. With regard to WRs, if Idzik decides to wait, I think it will be a big mistake. If he waits, then chances are, the Jets are looking at Ellington, Martavis Bryant and maybe Abbrederis as their WR addition. I think Mathews, Robinson, Landry, and Lattimore would all be gone by #49. I don't like Bryant at all. I think he's gonna be another Hill. I like Abbrederis, but he may not hold up in the NFL. Ellington's ok, but would not be happy with his being the the top WR pick of the Jets or worse, their only WR pick. The Jets have an excellent opportunity to add a topflight WR prospect in this draft. If they blow it assuming they can still get an excellent one in the 3rd or 4th round, I am gonna be pissed and ready for for Idzik's head.
One of those QBs will be available at #18. While I agree, Geno could shit the bed this year, but drafting a QB in Round 1, this year, sends the wrong message to the team. If Geno tanks in 2014, Vick will eventually start and our record will probably be lousy and we can get a QB in 2015. As far as saying no to CB in rd 1, that's a myopic point of view. I'm really concerned going into this season with our current secondary. Look at our schedule especially the 1st half and all the talented QBs we will be facing, not pretty. Drafting Milliner last year has nothing to do with drafting a CB this year, Idzik created a void not signing Cro or his cousin. The drop off of CBs after late Rd 1 or rd 2 is alarming, not so with the WR depth.
Yes, it's about time we take care of that WR issue now rather than later. All told, Ozy created a great mock and this discussion couldn't be more informative. IMO, the Jets are stuck between a rock and a hard place between CB/WR. Joe Namath flips coin for which position wins out lol.
I honestly hate this mentality. With Rex's defense, we'll never be bad enough to get Mariota, Winston is too much of a wild card and other than those two, the only other guy I like is Hundley. Just too many really good QBs in 2014 not to get one. Draft QBs in strong years like this year, not in weak drafts like last year or next year. _
The more I hear the experts talk about the hidden gem at QB, the guy that goes totally undetected and can turn out to surprise all the draft gurus as the absolute steal of this year draft is Logan Thomas. Call me crazy, but that might be the Jets 5th round or 6th round pick. Nothing before that IMHO
I think we take a QB it will either be: Mettenberger (only if he falls) or Tahj Boyd. Rex seems to love Boyd, officials from our team have met with him several times.
Drafting a QB at #18 could send "the wrong message to the team" but not necessarily imo. Idzik's constant mantra has been competition. Vick isn't the long-term answer at QB, and the QBs coming out next year may not be anywhere near as good a prospect as Teddy, Carr, and maybe Manziel. Mariota and Hundley may not enter the draft next year. I may be mistaken, but I believe that both will be Jrs. next year. They could get injured or have poor seasons or just decide they wanted to finish school before heading to the NFL, then where would the Jets be if Geno doesn't pan out? With QB being the most important position and Geno anything but a lock, I can't imagine how they could just cross QB off their list in the first round. I disagree that drafting Milliner last year has nothing to do with drafting a CB this year. They have spent more first round picks on CB than any other position over the last 7-10 years. They need to start using some 1st round picks on the offense, LB corps, and perhaps the S positions. I also disagree that Idzik created a void by not re-signing Cro or his cousin. Cro was awful last year, and his hip condition must be pretty bad for Idzik not to have re-signed him when Cro wanted to stay. DRC wanted too much money and hasn't been that good. Patterson and/or Walls could play every bit as well as Cro or DRC. I don't disagree that the drop off in CB talent is severe, but that shouldn't be the deciding factor. If it is, then Idzik is drafting based on need rather than BPA.
It might be the Jets pick, but if so, I will think it a wasted pick and Idzik insane. Thomas is awful.
I agree with you on that - at the top of the draft the gap is more noticeable. Trading down a few spots is risky, but if you can pull it off and still get your man, then you've done well - assuming the player develops as expected, of course!
Fuller is the best fit at corner for Rex's defense that I have seen of the early CB prospects in this draft, he's got to be pretty high on their board.
