sorry i didn't realize we had a choice between Ed Reed and Darrelle Revis at the 18.. you have to look at the player, and not assume we are picking between prototypical players at the position, and that its just some matter of which position is more important. that's not how drafting works..
It's still revealing that despite some great CB's being drafted in the 1st round over the last 13 years (15 if you go back to 1999 and Champ Bailey) none of them has won a championship to date. That's certainly a result of the cap restricting overall resource allocations but it also likely has to do with where the great player plays: in the middle of the defense with the play in front of him most of the time or on the edge with his back to the play most of the time.
ok so your point isn't so much on how to draft, it's about the importance of these positions in general.. if you want to make it interesting, don't just look at super bowls. There are too many variables into winning the big one. might be better to look at top defenses. overall D, passing D, turnovers, and maybe even 3rd down efficiency. would be a lot of work granted (lol more than i'm willing to do right now), but that may give a better indication. Even still tho, would that tell us if a CB had more value than a FS or vice versa? probably not actually. Some teams have had good players for each slot, which compliments each other. I think the value of the position comes down to what teams are looking to do, and how creative coaches are at maximizing their abilities. Both positions are important, both could impact the Jets quite a bit if it were the right player for their scheme, and I've seen Rex work wonders with top talent at each position. So to me, it comes down to the player, not so much the position. Another interesting thought might be to see whether CB or S gets taken more in the 1st round. We know CB's get paid more, and i believe they get selected more as well. I don't think that means they are more important a position, but it might indicate it is harder to find dependable top talents at CB.
Agreed. I think either Fuller or Dennard could be our pick. But the way I see it Gilbert goes to Tenn and Dennard to Pitt. Do the Jets value Fuller that highly? I hope they do more so than someone like Roby.
