http://www.newyorkjets.com/news/art...peration/8be2515a-a22f-4535-b814-9a1496089231 From what I read here, it's no secret he will do what he did last year. BPA=Best Valued Player Available, not necessarily filling a need. So if I am not mistaken, chance meets opportunity if a WR or CB is taken? What is your understanding on this.
The 49 is a much more interesting pick than the 18. I think the 18 is going to be pretty obvious between 2 or at most 3 candidates at that point. The 49 is wide open and no position is off-limits. That's the true BPA pick.
I think taking BPA over glaring need is fine so long as that BPA hits camp with his hair on fire and makes ppl forget about what might have been. 5 years from now no one will remember our 'glaring need' in the 2013 draft, but they sure as hell will remember the name Sheldon 'the son' Richardson, drafted in the first round by the NY Jets. Hopefully gone are the days of passing up a Warren Sapp b/c we kind of needed a TE (Kyle 'stone hands' Brady) with the 9th overall pick. That being said, if you're passing up a glaring need for some other BPA you better be right.
We are all trying to get a little into Idzik's thought processes (at least I am) and I thought this article sheds some light on this. Idzik rarely does any explaining especially with less than a week to go. I wasn't trying to underscore the obvious.
Maybe I'm being thick but I still don't get what new information he gave? We've heard him say BPA is the draft strategy a million times. I think every GM says the same thing.
If anything this is just "straight from the horses mouth" evidence that Sheldon was really BPA, as direct evidence against those who claim D-line was a need last year.
All he said was that he's not going off the letter grade for a guy when picking. I.E. If there's a B+ DL rated player but there's a B rated WR, he's taking the WR since the talent isn't THAT far off from their best available player and it hits a need too. If there is a B- OLB but there's a C+ CB available in round 3, he's taking the OLB unless we took one in the first 2 rounds. Idzik has no idea who the first 17 picks will be. For all we know, the 49ers or Saints or Dolphins can trade up ahead of us and take a Beckham Jr or a Fuller. He didn't really tip anything because there's nothing to tip given zero picks have been made or confirmed.
I'm not drinking and I don't see where he said that. If anything he specifically says he's NOT going to do that ("in other words we're not going to leave grade levels") Maybe I'm just retarded.
There has to be a LOT more stress for a GM who fore-goes need for BPA. He has to be doubly right. If a GM steps over a gaping hole in his roster to draft a bust, eeeesh. If a GM has a need for a WR and he selects the highest rated WR in the draft and the kid turns out to be a bust (Gholston?), at least the GM can say "Hey, we needed a WR and I drafted the best one available", he gets a break b/c he drafted the player we were all clamoring for. But if he ignores a huge need to draft what he thinks will be a 10 yr, first ballot pro-bowler and they guy tanks, well there's no excuse, no sympathy, and no job for that GM.
"In other words we're not going to leave grade levels" is what I interpreted it being he isn't going to reach for a said player but if its a player rated B+ that's a ILB vs a player that's rated B that's a WR, providing he hasn't taken a player of that position before hand, he would not have a problem with the B rated player if it fills the bigger need. He just won't take a player because it fills an immediate need(I.E. taking say Verrett at 18 when Beckham Jr is available) so he won't be hamstrung on fixing glaring holes. I could be wrong though. Its up for interpretation.
He is not using the term BPA. The Jets have a different universe of putting value on players. When we think someone is a regular BPA the FO thinks differently. He is ending all speculation that a WR or CB is absolutely our first and second rounds. This could mean another DL lol for all I know.
I don't know, doesn't seem like anything new to me. No where did he or anyone on the Jets say WR or CB was absolutely our first and second rounds and I think most people figured we could go most any position in the 1st & 2nd. Whatever. I'm moving on.
If this is supposed to constitute John Idzik "tipping his hand" I hope he never enters the field of professional poker. Not quite as bad as the Brian "Big Tits" Costello's "comically tight-lipped" NY Post trash piece on Idzik the other day but still, pre-draft groping…
Thanks for your comment because we will all not be disappointed next Thursday having understood what model Idzik is following to improve the team. Personally, I would be let down if the CB/WR issue isn't addressed ASAP. It could mean he adds talent regardless of position e.g. another QB. This is the philosophy they followed at Seattle.
