Barr probably has the best bend around the edge in the class (including Clowney and Mack)... dont think the same could be said for Gholston.
This. I have a bit of trepidation about taking Barr if he falls to us, but he's a tremendous athlete, is as natural an edge rusher as you'll ever see, and despite having a tendency to be pushed around in the run game is actually a tremendous tackler. Besides we haven't had an edge rush in so long, and him next to Mo is a match made in heaven. If he falls to us I'd have trouble turning him away.
Me and WW said this a while back, but Barr could be the best edge rusher in the class. He has a low floor and I will admit that, but I think he has Aldon Smith/Von Miller type upside. Havent watched much of him this year because his stock was originally very high, but if he slips I dont think we can pass on him. Coples - Sheldon - Snacks - Mo - Barr That would be the best DL in football by far IMO and all would be under 25. ... Doubt he slides, but crazier things have happened.
I wish this draft happened already. I am so sick of mock drafts and mock scenarios. More time for people to make shit up. Funny thing I read today: 95% of mock drafts and stocks rising and falling is complete bullshit. This was all already predicted by all the owners and GM's
If we do draft him I won't be upset, but I don't think he'll represent top value. There are a bunch of guys who are great pass rushers but under preform in the run so I'd rather go DB in round 1 and look for one of the pass rushers in the second. I'd rather have a guy like Trent Murphy with a much higher floor and a better track record vs the run personally. Darqueze Dennard, Trent Murphy, and Donte Moncrief in the first 3 rounds would be a bit of a dream draft for me I think. I think those 3 players fit in absolutely perfectly with our roster.
My big point (which I've made on other threads before) is not only does he have that level upside, if you line him up next to Mo, it's a Justin Smith/Aldon Smith type upside for the whole defense. The kind of thing where the offense really has NO good options in defending the two of them. Mo on his own one on one is a matchup nightmare with all but a few OT's in the entire NFL, what do you do when next to him is an elite edge rusher who likely get to the QB even if you chip him with a TE/RB? Besides the fact that Mo could cover up a lot of Barr's deficiencies in the run game--he's easily one of the best run defenders in the NFL. With that kind of combo an offense is putting its QB's career on the line every time they try a deep route. Edge rushers like that also create a TON of turnovers, and as far as I can tell Barr particularly has a knack for. That's how a defense goes from being good to being feared.
That means either a top QB prospect has slipped [Bridgewater/Manziel/Bortles] or a top OLB prospect has slipped. [Khalil Mack/Anthony Barr/Dee Ford]. That's another good 6 prospects to draft from. I don't see a problem going with defensive picks again. [And trading down is always a fantastic option if Jets can find the sucker to give up a good pick.]
Zach martin has exp at guard as well so thats an intriguing fit for the jets. not a sexy pick but may be a necessary one. i dont have much confidence in colon this year. Martin could come in at guard and eventually slither over to tackle. as much as i would rather go WR or OLB - i can make a case for OL in round 1, more so than CB.
It's not gonna happen but in that scenario, if Zack Martin is there @18, I'd have no problem with taking him. Replace Winters immediately @LG, plus you give yourself insurance against Colon (age, injury). He can also play RT in case Giaco flops or goes down. Or take Dennard or Gilbert or whichever DB is highest on your board.
Unless Idzik thinks that Martin could start at OG immediately, then slide to LT or RT in a year or two, I don't want Martin. I don't think any OG is worth a 1st round pick. An OT, yes, but not an OG. Now if it was Lewan, then I'd say yes, definitely, the Jets have to take him unless maybe Barr or Bridgewater or Mack is sitting there as well.
i wasn't promoting martin as a guard - at 18 u pick him as a future/current tackle but have the flexibility to insert him right away at guard depending on performance. i doubt it goes that way u never know. it would be pretty shrewd move and instantly provide talented depth to our line, at more than 1 position. agree on lewan - if there he has to be a serious consideration for the pick
Martin would probably wind up at RT or LG. He's not really big enough to project as a LT. To go to RT he would probably have to bulk up some.
I would take Lee before Cooks or Beckham - so I don't see it as a problem. Of the four the player that I would like to see at #18 would be Dennard. Can't seem to decide between Dennard or Lee. I do see Martin as a viable selection at #18 as well. Just my opinion.
OK, thanks for the clarification. Martin's flexibility would be a huge plus. They could possibly start him at OG immediately, then he'd be more ready to take over for Brick or Giacommini in a year or two.
just posted in another thread that i believe Martin could be a possibility. The flexibility to play LG, RG, or RT is not a bad thing. Insert him wherever our weakest link appears to be this year. Eventually he will end up at RT. Another name not mentioned here.... Jordan Matthews. He's my 3rd ranked WR, and i think would be a perfect fit for the Jets. And as others have mentioned, who knows who will have slid down if those other 4 are gone. Chances are someone unexpected would be there in this scenario.
I love Dennard. I just wish he was a little faster and more athletic. I would love Gilbert just because we need a playmaker in the secondary so badly.
I'd really love Dennard in the 2nd but that will never happen. Dennard is by far my favorite CB in this draft. I'm just so leery of spending another 1st round pick on a CB when the safeties are shaky and a WR would help so much in developing the QB.
Do not be surprised if the NYJ change direction somewhat. Assuming that Dennard, Barr and Pryor are gone, Jets might target C.J. Mosley or Ray Frazier before a WR like Cook or Lee. By many accounts CJ is top ten material and perhaps the most complete LB, always taking the best angle all over the field and hitting like a truck.
