Beyond the unexpected, what you can expect is that because of this year's draft delay, people are sick and tired of mock drafts, their impatience is growing and their nerves are getting frayed to the point that when the Jets' drafts picks are finally announced, the backlash from those who either hate the picks or whose favorite players weren't selected will be that much stronger and from there, the back-and-forth TGG backbiting should reach epic Marv Alpert-like proportions. I'm only hoping the good mods will take that into consideration and grant some greater "boys will be boys" latitude come next week (since those trainwrecks should also make for some great, entertaining reading). on-topic: who the heck knows…
I can only speak for myself- but number 4 would not be all that bad. Offensive line is a very important position for us going forward.
Don't disagree. I would not mind a stud OT but I have a feeling it will send a lot of fans into a spin.
It seems like the top OT's will almost certainly be gone by the time we pick, and I just don't think one will be BPA. If we get one I'll be happy because it means a beast fell to us.
Wouldn't mind CJ Mosley at 18. He's been falling in mock drafts but mainly due to perceived team needs. He has great instincts and can cover well for the position. I love Harris but his deficiencies in coverage are well known and isn't worth his contract right now. Mosley would be great value at 18.
The one hang up on Mosley is the number of surgeries he's had. He's been really beat up at Alabama. He's a great ILB though. If he is healthy and likely to stay that way he's a top 10 pick.
Baltimore would probably steal our pick anyway (except maybe TE after the Pitta signing). I'm expecting Buffalo and Baltimore to take two of our BPA's before we ever get chance to pick them.
ROFLMAO. I can't envision rooting for just a football team. The average NFL fan doesn't realize what they're missing by not being Jets fans.
We're going to draft BPA, not by positional need. I realize that none of the mocks have us taking BPA, but the reality is from all indications that's exactly what our FO is going to do. I believe that it was their guiding principle in last year's draft, and I imagine that old man Idzik is not going to deviate from that strategy this year.
That's kind of a lame argument thought because there isn't some standard agreement on who is the BPA, it goes by the Jet's own board. So even if they are picking for need they can just say it was the BPA at that spot according to their board and nobody can really question it. They aren't ever going to come out and say "well we had player X rated ahead of the guy we picked but we picked this guy anyway" that just doesn't happen. Ever. At least for the first three rounds I think they will pick for a combination of need and value, not necessarily BPA but value. For example say they have a DT (obviously not a position of need) rated as the 10th best prospect in the draft and a WR/TE/CB or some other obvious position of need rated as the 13th best prospect in the draft and both are available at the 18th spot. Do you think they are going to pick the DT just because he's 3 spots higher on their list and therefore the BPA according to the board? Unless they guy is going to be a generational talent then I sure as hell hope note. There is still a very good amount of value in the guy rated at 13th plus the guy is likely going to come in and contribute right away and not spend a year on the bench or just never make that jump considering our strength at that position. I think drafting for a team in our position that has clear strengths at some positions and giant gaping holes at other positions it would be absolutely idiotic to pick up a guy at a position of strength if you literally have a guy at a position of need ranked right after them. I'm not saying you should reach 20 spots and draft a guy solely for need but if the example that I laid out up above plays out I think it would be really ill-informed to draft a guy to stand on the sidelines over a guy that can come in and contribute right away and still has the value to contribute long term, possibly have a better career than the guy standing on the sidelines would have had to begin with.
If you draft for need you become a worse roster over time. That's because you give up a small percentage with every pick you make and then the normal grind of injuries and players not working out becomes magnified because you didn't have the most value to begin with. I won't be at all surprised if the Jets take an OL with the 18 pick. It's not a glaring need yet but the problem is evident just over the horizon. If the BPA is an OL I think the Jets are going to grab him confident that they have improved the roster overall with the decision. As an example, let's say Taylor Lewan falls to 18 and the Jets are willing to sign off on his potential character issues - which basically come down to one drunken bar fight when he was 21 years old. It's hard to see where he won't be the BPA at that point. You don't get potential franchise LT's falling into your lap in most drafts. You either have to be up high in the top 10 or trade up to get them. Having Lewan there would be a major value gain for the Jets, assuming they thought his character issues weren't real.
I don't think there's any way we draft anything but a CB with the first pick. I really had my heart set on Cooks but I'm leaning towards that being a pipe dream
think any chance they'd go Martin from ND? Baldy on NFLN was saying the top 3 OT's, and even Martin would be rated higher than Fisher who went #1 overall last year. And Martin can play any position on the line, which would give us lots of flexibility. ....I'd be kinda surprised if it happened, but i can see the logic.
