Hey everyone, I know your probably sick of mock drafts, but I still wanted to make a final mock draft. The picks I have going for us I haven't seen in many mock drafts so hopefully you enjoy it ROUND 1, ANTHONY BARR, OLB UCLA A former running back that's was converted to an OLB his junior year, Barr is a prototypical 3-4 OLB. In the past two seasons alone he's tallied 23.5 sacks and 41.5 tackles for a loss, which is pretty remarkable for a player that's only been playing the position for 2 years. He shows elite athleticism off the edge and is deadly in pursuit as his motor is extremely high. As of right now, Barr has gotten away only using his speed to get past blockers and he'll need to work on that if he truly wants to be special in the NFL, but I think he can do it. He needs to learn counter moves and convert his speed into power more, but with hard work it's possible. Also, I'd like to see him bulk up because he isn't perfect at the point of attack, but with his frame he has a lot of room to grow. A lot of people might say this pick isn't realistic, but I beg to differ. He isn't a great fit in a 4-3 defense as he'll be a tweener, which already knocks him off some players boards. I also think players like Taylor Lewan, Odell Beckham Jr, Marqise Lee, Kyle Fuller, and Dee Ford get drafted higher than expected. I ultimately believe this could be the steal of the draft and make our defense truly elite. ROUND 2, CODY LATIMER, WR INDIANA I've been a large supporter of Cody Latimer and it's nice to see him finally moving up draft boards. I honestly believe this kid has all the tools to be a legit #1 WR in the NFL. At 6'3 and running a 4.38 at his pro day, Latimer is a perfect wide receiver for today's NFL. Against Illinois he caught 11 blls for 189 yards and ran into the end zone 3 times, it's apparent that he can ball. He runs fast, has strong hands, and can high point contested balls. Also, he can beat press coverage as he led all wide receivers with 23 reps at the combine. The only problem I have with Latimer is that his route tree isn't that complex right now as only seems to run a lot of come backs and quick moves. I'm sure with practice that will improve. ROUND 3, JAYLEN WATKINS, CB FLORIDA I really like Jaylen and it'll be interesting to see what kind of pro he becomes at the next level. He played safety for a decent portion of 2013, but converted to cornerback and has done well for himself. He was put on an island a lot of time and only had a burn percentage of 15%, which is superb (burn rate is percentage of competitions allowed when a pass is thrown towards a cornerback). He isn't an extremely large cornerback at 5'11 3/4, but he still does well in press coverage. He would need to add more weight at the next level, but that wouldn't be a huge problem. I'd like to see him learn how to play the ball more than play the receivers, which seemed to be one of his problems at Florida. Transition from college to the pros for a cornerback is tough, so it won't come right away for Watkins, but through practice I think it's possible. I ultimately see Watkins as part of a defensive backfield rebuild and I would be excited to see what him and Dee could do down the futuer. ROUND 4, ANTONIO "Tiny" RICHARDSON, OT TENNESSEE Once considered a first round prospect, Richardson has really seen his stock fall recently and it's not without good reasoning. His play took a step back this season and his showing at the combine wasn't exactly fantastic. Regardless, there is still a lot to like about Tiny. An absolute mauler in the run game, he's quick enough to get off the line of scrimmage and you'll constantly see him taking out linebackers are the second level. He's a guy that won't stop playing until he knows for a fact the play is over, which is the type of play I personally want from an offensive tackle. It's all well and good for run blocking with Tiny, but where he's fallen off is his pass protection. His foot movement has been suspect and his hands aren't where they should be must of the time. His balance also isn't perfect. Still, there is a lot to work with and I still think he can be a valuable starter down the line. I like the upside he brings ROUND 4, ARTHUR LYNCH, TE GEORGIA We finally address the tight end position with the selection of Arthur Lynch, a player who doesn't offer insane upside, but is a good football player. One of the better inline blockers in this draft, Lynch is aggressive at the point of attack and can also get off the line of scrimmage without much trouble. He's quick when it comes to running intermediate routes and has soft hands, which is good. When it comes to long routes, Lynch isn't as effective as he doesn't have elite speed. Also, he doesn't seem to get any yards after the catch because of his limited athletic ability. Still, at 6'5, there is a lot to like about Lynch and I think him and Cumberland could form a great tight end duo in the future. ROUND 5, KEVIN NORWOOD, WR ALABAMA Does Kevin Norwood do anything amazing? Not exactly, but he does everything well. A 6'2 possession receiver, Norwood seems to catch almost everything that comes his way and is willing to put his body on the line to catch the ball. The reason why he's likely to be selected so low is because he doesn't offer much upside as he ran a 4.48 at the combine and doesn't seem to pick up a lot of yards after the catch as he doesn't make people miss that much. With that being said, he's still the textbook definition of a quarterback's best friend as he always finds a way to get open and has great hands. People might argue that the Jets have Jeremy Kerley to fulfill this role, but there is always potential for him to get hurt on any given week. Norwood could step into the slot and be Geno's (or Vick's) best friend on 3rd down. Norwood has the potential to be a steal of the draft. ROUND 6, BRANDON THOMAS, OG CLEMSON Poor Brandon Thomas. He tore his ACL while doing a private workout for the Saints in early April and his stock has understandable taken a hit. Before that, he was considered a day two pick at offensive guard. As an individual who has played both tackle and guard, Thomas is a versatile lineman. He has the 6th largest arms out of linemen in this draft class and did superb at the senior bowl. He has good feet in pass protection and his hand placement is decent. Overall, I think if the Jets stash Thomas for the year, they might have a starting offensive guard in him eventually. ROUND 7, CODY MANDELL, P ALABAMA Our punting game hasn't been good since we've gotten rid of Weatherford. Ryan Quigley isn't perfect and the Jets can definitely use the competition. Ultimately, this is a flyer
To be honest, this is poor execution of a mock draft when the JETS have 12 picks in the draft and you only made 8 selections. Are there trades somewhere or you just didn't really finish yet because the JETS have three fourth round picks and four sixth round picks?
i know man, with finals in the next few days i had to trim it down. by the time finals are done the draft will be happening so i couldn't do all 12 picks sorry about that
I like me some mock drafts, but when to teams ever one by one address need positions methodically like that? Dom, I'm not singling you out, but it really seems like mocks follow this pattern of WR, CB, TE, FS, etc. Whenever I have seen a draft result for the Jets I am always thinking "that looks nothing like what the mocks predicted. They didn't even draft safety until the 7th."
I like it except for the Barr pick. This guy is dropping and might be bottom of the first round now. Lattimer is really moving up the charts now and you really have to worry about those type of movers. He has a lot of Dez Bryant qualities and not the rabid sideline nutcase screaming at his teammates qualities. But as far as size and good hands and might be faster than Dez.
Barr reminds me of a black Jason Taylor. He's going to be a stat compiler, but he's not going to be a guy that QBs kick in the fear mechanism for.
i think barr falling is more media than anything, he's still an elite level talent that can be molded to a great pass rusher and a prototypical 3-4 olb. i can't find a legitimate reason for his fall
Nice job overall. I'm not the biggest Barr fan but if he's BPA, sure why not. Latimer is a guy I see getting a lot of late first round love. Tiny Richardson is a guy I like that if he dropped to R4 would be a steal for us. Also like the Lynch and Norwood picks.
