Build a young team around Geno and lets roll! Seriously, you have to give Geno the ball and see what this kid can prove in year 2. If we have to pull him for Vick then we'd better start scouting which QB we're taking in 2015.
A guy like Geno needs guys like Decker around him not a bunch of rookies, he's nowhere near a leader yet.
These guys should grow together as young players, with a nice mix of vets for guidance along the way.
The worst QB in football last year is certainly not gone. He's competing with Vick to be our starting QB this year. You're silly. _
I don't think you pay a QB like Michael Vick $5M to sit behind a rookie (yes, I know). I think you bring in a guy like Vick to start. And give Geno/Simms the opportunity to sit and learn as much as possible until Vick gets his season ending injury in week 5 or 6. Vick has played for MM in this exact system for 5 years and actually knows the whole playbook, unlike Geno who's only been shown about 20% of it. Geno has 2 more years before he grows into our 'average QB' who doesn't lose games for Rex's defense. Sitting behind Thee Michael Vick for 1/3 to 1/2 of his 2nd season would be a god sent. And the O-Line might actually try playing with Vick behind them.
We will see who is better. Vick's issue is that he is just too small to take a seasons worth of beatings.
Many Smith Fans assume that Vick cannot avoid missing games due to injury, and that is the big concern about him. But it is not a given that he could not play a whole season. Much will depend on the OL, pass protection but also the effectiveness of the running game, even Johnson contributing with short passes. If Vick can stay in a role that minimizes the risk of injury, but still allowing him to take off from time to time, and the OL does a good job, it is a reasonable possibility that he can last a whole season. While I remain concerned that the Jets have mismanaged the Cb situation, leaving them with more holes to fill in the draft than I feel good about, the signings on O this off season have the potential to make this a playoff team. That includes in particular the Vick signing. Before the Jets made that move, I was all for the notoin that the main thing they needed to do in the coming season is decide whether Smith should be the starting Qb going into 15 and beyond. But a good draft and what i think is the likelihood they will upgrade Cb can make this a team with playoff potential. That being the case, fuck all this talk about giving up on the coming season to take the so-called long view. You just don't walk away from a potential playoff season. Start Vick, protect him and hope he lasts the season. Now, here is the key to that. Rex is once again in job saving mode. No one can reasonably expect that he's solid for 15 if the Jets again miss the playoffs. So who does Rex think is most likely to achieve that? I think Vick. Rex himself has to look at this team as having playoff potential, and he will play his cards accordingly. Unless Smith shows significant improvement, or if Vick gets hurt in camp, it will be Vick, imo.
I don't actually know. But I would bet it's not too much if any. Why would he? Philly's not a division foe. McCoy is known for breaking down film of QB's? Is he a D-back too?
Not for nothing but how many of "us" are known for breaking down film on QB's or are D'backs? There are 256 NFL games a year and his job is to be the best NFL player he can be. He's pretty damn good at his job. I wouldn't be shocked if he's seen a lot of those games although I have no idea whether he has or has not. Maybe it's unlikely that he's seen all of Geno's games? Maybe he and Vick sat down and watched all the Jets games over a few blunts? I don't know. Either way I just find your statement that he has seen less Geno than us as a little over board. If you said "he's probably seen less Geno than us" I probably would have never responded.
I don't agree with that, players in the NFL are famous for keeping school rivalries after they go pro. I think I remember during Hard Knocks that Mangold (Ohio St) and another player (Michigan) went back and forth with pranks or hazing or something. But I think the idea that McCoy would trash Geno simply because he played for WVU is kind of stretching it, he's sticking up for his friend first and foremost, the school rivalry thing is probably just icing on the cake.
I'm surprised this even turned into a thread, Mike Vick was his boy for 3 years so what's he going to say, Mike Vick isn't the better QB? He is not tied to Geno or the Jets organization in any way, so he's just going to give a shoutout to Vick.
How inconceivable is it that McCoy's opinion is based on pure fact as opposed to any personal bias rooted in friendship? A healthy Vick with (and often even without) a good supporting cast has time and again demonstrated the ability to do things on the field that few, if any, other QBs are capable of doing much less Geno Smith. While Smith may represent our future, recent signings reflect more of a win now inclination on behalf of the FO so unless Smith takes some dramatic steps forward in his development in the immediate term, the 2014 starter will be Vick.....
