You probably couldn't name half the players on the Jets roster. Neither could I, especially the practice squad goons. Say we trade down 5 spots and get an extra 2 & 3. That's two really good rookies that can come in and replace some of the no-name players. We have players that have suited up for every game and never set foot on the field the entire season. Replace that guy.
I'm not arguing for it, I'm just saying why it could be beneficial if the draft falls a certain way. It depends on who is available when we pick and who's offering what, trading down isn't something they decide to do before the draft starts.
The contingency plan could well be to throw the 9 guys they have at CB other than Milliner into a competition to play the other spot. The Jets have 6 guys on the depth chart + Dowling, Lankster, Rose and Taylor. It'd be a reasonable expectation that the Jets might find a #2 CB out of the 9 guys not named Milliner. It might not happen also but there are lot of 3rd round picks or higher in that mix.
Attitude risk. Everyone thinks this guy has morphed into Jesus Christ or something but he's only played 1 season. Maybe he will maintain good behavior but he has plenty opportunity left to get suspended for weed again.
He was taken before our third round pick. If we got him it would have to be with the pick we got Geno with. And that would have been seen as a huge reach. For all we know we were planning on drafting him in the third.
Guys who fit the Rex Ryan profile: Calvin Pryor - FS who plays like a SS and hits like a truck. Strong run defender. Darqueze Dennard - CB who plays well in press coverage. If the Jets go defense I am guessing one of these two. On offense there are so many different ways the Jets could go that it's hard to predict what will happen.
Like hornblower already said, the jets are in a pretty good position. We have no burning holes anywhere. We have 9 DBs, 7 WRs, 4TEs, 4QBs, etc. No, none of them are the top player in the nfl, but we HAVE players at those positions and they WILL get better with experience. But one thing we might NOT have much longer is an O-Line. Hmmmmm.
At least the Richardson pick last year bought the new FO some credibility. Nobody is going to moan and whine about a pick at a position of some depth if there's any real chance they were the BPA. Well, some people will moan and whine but most of us will give the Jets the benefit of the doubt given how good Richardson was.
I think it's very possible that we might either trade up or down in the first round. Our pick seems to be neither here nor there, too late for the top players at various positions, and not really offering a chance to grab someone we cant grab later (unless something unexpected happens and someone slips). We also have a lot of mid round picks (3/4/5), so if there is someone the Jets really like (e.g. Clinton-Dix/Dennard) who doesn't go in the first 10, I could see them trading up and trying to leapfrog the other teams looking for secondary players. Or trading down to get more picks in 2/3/4 rounds.
Idzik's glacial pace isn't conducive to draft day maneuvering / opportunism. If Reggie Mackenzie calls offering multiple picks for #18, Johnny won't have time to mull it over.
The Jets will already know what they're willing to do in terms of a deal for the 18 or other early picks. Pace and preparation are two completely different things and I have no doubt the Jets will be prepared to make moves before they sit down at the table on draft day. The pace that John Idzik operates at in negotiations is very different than the pace for other things. Every move the Jets made in free agency was considered well in advance of the player's availability. They got Decker in and signed fairly quickly. He visited nobody else. The length of the visit before the contract was signed was most likely purely negotiating space for Idzik to get the Jets to a deal he was comfortable with. People began talking about a glacial pace of negotiations when all the CB's went by in free agency. I think that was pure BS. I don't think the Jets had an actual interest in any of those corners once it became clear the market for CB's was high this year, nearly doubled from last year. The only guy the Jets spent any time on was DRC and my guess is that the only reason they spent time with him is that he was the guy left standing when the music stopped in the free agent CB market this year. It's just a guess but it's reasonable to assume that the Jets were just kicking the tires on him to see if they could get him on a one year deal when they finally got him in. The deal the Giants signed was really silly if you look at it. Then everybody jumped all over the Jets because they were so slow making a trade with the Eagles for Jackson. The rumor was the Jets had offered a 4th and a 5th and wouldn't budge off that offer. We now know that was complete and utter BS, since Chip Kelly has said that the Eagles never got an offer for Jackson. At the time people were talking about the glacial pace of the trade negotiations another helpful columnist offered the rumor that Jackson's contract was the likely hang up and the Jets weren't moving fast enough to get that done so the trade could go through. All of that was BS. The glacial meme is BS. It's all made up to have a story line to project against the Jets this year now that the information blackout in Florham Park has become apparent. There's no glacial pace to John Idzik, just a bunch of detractors who want to make him look bad by inventing a meme they can reference again and again when the stuff they don't know (which is almost everything about the Jets deliberations this year) threatens to interfere with a deadline they have to meet. That's all it is.
My Money is on Darrin Walls who is streets ahead of the other guys you mentioned. BTW what is the status of Aaron Berry? As for if we pick at 18 or trade up/down. Idzek hints that if a BPA is there over a need they'd take it. Honesty or veiled threat to potential trade partners? If we can come away with 4-6 starters out of those 12 picks, I'd be over the moon
