First and probably last mock draft this year, keeping it simple so no trades. Seems like fun so here it goes. Round 1 (18) CB Darqueze Dennard, Michigan State -- Another defensive pick, another corner I know.. I'll probably be screaming at the television as I'll be as mad as anyone. With Evans, Watkins, and Ebron gone that leaves ODB and Cooks if either even make it to 18. I would rather take one of them but for this mock this is what I see the Jets doing. Round 2 (49) TE Jace Amaro, Texas Tech -- One of my favorite guys that for some reason keeps slipping down on most mock drafts. He may not be Ebron but he is still a pretty dang good football player. Lee and Matthews won't be here and I'm not a big fan of Richardon or Benjamin. Latimer, Adams, or Robinson could be options but the receiver class has great depth and the tight ends do not. Round 3 (80) OLB Kyle Van Noy, BYU -- This guy may be my favorite defensive player in the draft. In January I was hoping he would fall to the second and we would snag him, now for whatever reason he also if slipping. His production on the field is all I care about not some dumb track numbers. Even if we needed to trade up in the 3rd I'd be all for Van Noy. Round 4 (104) WR Jarvis Landry, LSU -- No way he falls to the fourth round, right? I see most mocks have him as a late 3rd and I think that's crazy he should be a 2nd round pick, then I look at it and there are so many receivers "projected" to go ahead of him. I see several receivers slipping further than expected because teams know how much depth there is. To me, Landry is this years Stedman Bailey. Imagine grabbing ODB and then Landry. (115) RB/WR/KR Dri Archer, Kent State -- I really wanted Charles Sims but with Johnson, Ivory, and Powell we don't need another running back. Archer is different, he provides something we haven't had for awhile now. We get another threat in MM's offense and a burner on special. If we pass I would love to get DAT later in the draft. No Jacoby Ford will not prevent this from happening. (137) DE Will Clarke, WVU -- I know, the best position group on the team instead of a safety or an offensive lineman. The Jets like to do things like this.. Last year we took 12 lineman and asked 7 of them to play the opposite side of the ball they were used to. But seriously Clarke will be a steal in the 4th and will provide great depth with Douzable as the #2's. Round 5 (154) MLB Max Bullough, Michigan State -- There were a lot of guys I liked here, Ed Reynolds, Chris Davis, Adrian Hubbard, and Yavin Smallwood hopefully we can grab one. I could see us taking a safety but we have young guys like Allen, Jarrett, and Miles already. I just see us ignoring the position yet another year. Davis would be intriguing if we do not select Archer, that return on Bama was something else. Round 6 (195) QB David Fales, San Jose State -- I think he's worthy of a 4th round pick, we'll probably take a QB I just pray its not Boyd. (209) OG Charles Leno, Boise State -- Boring depth pick maybe he'll make a difference maybe he won't. Got to assume we'll draft at least one offensive lineman. Guys like DAT wouldn't make me mad though. (210) OLB Prince Shembo, Notre Dame -- Typed in Michael Sam and then hit backspace. It would be interesting but we should stay away this time. Wouldn't be a bad idea to grab another pass rusher late in the draft. (213) CB Aaron Colvin, Oklahoma -- Didn't want to go with the boring Colt Lyerla or Van Der Kamp picks although I'd be fine with either. Colvin would be a mid round pick but he tore his ACL. Worth taking a shot on. Round 7 (233) WR Jerry Rice JR, UNLV -- This dude did absolutely nothing in college but that is okay.. look at his name but seriously I'd take a guy like L'Damian Washington out Mizzou
A lot of people trash Amaro. I guess I can understand the methods of that, but he is like a wild colt that needs to be tamed, he's tough, has good speed and a really surprising burst. He reminds me of Shockey on the field, but with good coaching he could become more disciplined. Guy plays like a wildman. That could play to our benefit.
I typically dislike any mock that starts with Dennard, but I would be very happy with this. Sadly though, Im not sure if Amaro, Van Noy and Landry are there at their respective spots here. If the board fell like this, we get 5 immediate impact players. Massive upgrades on both sides of the ball.
I don't know why so many people are so against CB in round 1. If we don't get Ebron, and we don't take Cooks, or Lee, then CB is what I prefer. Whether you like it or not, we messed up our CB situation earlier in the offseason, and it is now a top priority. You can't let feelings get in the way. Rex needs corners for the system, and if the guy we would theoretically get works out, we would be set at CB for a long time, well at least for #1, and #2.
I'd be happy with Dennard even though it's not the sexy pick, but I don't think he lasts to 18. If we're going secondary, I'd rather go safety though because I think that cb talent can be found at value in the later rounds.
If it shook out that way we would have quite the haul but I don't think Van Noy or Landry are available at those spots. Most things I've seen have Van Noy going in the 2nd and Landry in the late 2nd or early 3rd.
That's where he belongs but every mock I've seen has him behind 25 other receivers I don't see that many receivers getting drafted so I think a bunch of guys will fall further than expected.
That's what they originally were. Now they've each been mocked around where I did. Landry is way better than the 4th round and a year ago Van Noy was a projected 1st
Van Noy would be great. I love the kids motor. He seems like he would fit well in this defense too. I don't think he will be there in round 3 though but I hope the jets do snag him
Don't get caught up in "everyone's mock", Landry's stock dropped at the Combine, but he improved at his Pro day. One team will pull the trigger in rd 2 and it may be the Jets. I think Landry is one of the best players that is NFL ready. Nobody else in this draft class makes the tough catches like Landry.
Fair enough. I don't think it's really ever fair to say someone will never fall to a certain spot because there are draft day risers and fallers, that's just a fact of the draft. That being said you can say within reason certain players won't fall a round or two out of their projected spot (i.e. Clowney isn't lasting until the 3rd round). But we'll see what happens on draft day.
agree that landry and van noy wont last into the listed rounds. i dont think either of them gets past round 2. i could see the giants picking van noy in round 2.
That's why I hate the combine! To me it means nothing. Track speed means nothing catching passes in shorts on air means nothing. Landry probably has the best hands in this class and I would gladly take him in the late second
i would sign up for this draft in a heartbeat, even tho i'm a little unsure on Amaro. but the reason i'd like it so much, it's unrealistic. I'm not sure Dennard lasts till 18. good CB's don't last long, and he'd fit nicely with Pitt and Balt. Van Noy in the 3rd, while possible, isn't very likely either. Landry I'd consider in the 2nd round, and would jump on the pick in the 3rd. No way he lasts till our pick in the 4th..
Yeah it's a best case scenario for both Van Noy and Landry like I said in the OP I don't think either should last to where I have them but I could see it happening. If we needed to trade up for either I'd be 110% willing to throw away our late picks to do so
