I wouldn't mind trading him. was never a fan of the pick in the first place, he had some nice moments but if we can get something good for him I'd do it.

If the Jets picked up a guy like Mack, I'd prefer that they followed the Steelers blueprint of taking an OLB and moving him inside, Mack is a real ballhawk for a linebacker, that would be an awesome presence in the middle of the field.

Probably trade David Harris away if that happened, though.

Who cares about the great presence in the middle of the field? You don't draft an elite pass-rushing OLB only to move him to the inside to play basically only the run and drop into coverage some and maybe run an occasional blitz.

Mack would be the perfect fit for Jets ILB in Rex's defense. He reads offenses very well, has the speed to sift outside to create mismatches, and has the size to deal with guards. I think I'll trust what a proven winner on defense does (Steelers) does with players like that. And since the Jets have been doing the Steelers thing over the past few years (Wilkerson, Richardson both interior linemen with burst used as 34 DEs) hopefully the trend will continue, assuming they do actually take a OLB prospect early.

This is a great point Zach, and I have struggled with the current scenario, with the notion of using Coples as an OLB. He is way too big to play the role as it is intended to be played nor does it show to be his natural and optimum position. If we draft a top OLB, will there be a meaty enough role for Coples? whom I like a lot, or are we looking to trade him?
I have a funny feeling that unless Rex has a different plan for Coples he could be traded and move in a different direction.

I must have missed something. What great collegiate OLB did the Steelers move to ILB?

That said, I'm not doubting you, but I'm sorry, I don't care what the Steelers have done. They haven't exactly been dominating anyone recently. I think the idea of taking a great OLB and moving him to ILB is just nuts, plain and simple. If they did it, it was because they already had two excellent OLBs and needed someone on the inside. The Jets don't even have one great OLB, much less two great OLBs.

Further, the ILB position is not as important as the OLB position in a 3-4 alignment. The OLB position and the NT position are the two most important positions in a 3-4 D alignment. Why in the world would you want to take a fast, effective pass rusher and have him going up against OGs all game? That makes absolutely zero sense to me.

It actually does make some sense, a guy with versatile playmaking ability like Mack could really do some damage from the ILB position. He can be a major pass rushing threat on blitzing plays, and can be used as an edge rusher. He has the amazing athletic ability to play in coverage. For a team like the Jets who set the tone of their entire defense based on stopping the run, setting a guy like Mack right in the middle who can diagnose plays, he could be a real disruptive force in the run game and a successful pass rusher vs basically any offensive lineman. Theoretically it could work really well, but I need to go back and watch more of Mack's tape to see if he can drop into coverage on such a frequent basis. I didn't watch much on him because there's really no chance he'll fall to the Jets.

EDIT: That's assuming he has the mental ability to master so many different positions, most guys can't. If he can't manage all of that, his ability on the edge is too valuable.

If I recall, last offseason he had knocked himself down to under 280 lbs. Whether that carried on through into the season, I'm not sure. Is there a way to find out his playing weight during the season?

You would have a more difficult time finding a Steelers ILB that didn't play outside in college.

I honestly don't really care what you think, the Steelers have been very successful converting players this way so I think I'll trust their recipe of success over yours.

ILB has become very important in recent years since teams started attacking inside the hash marks far more often.

this - and that scenario would also take some of the heat off of our stellar secondary.

Heh and you think I care what YOU think. It's a discussion list, but since you aren't interested in others' opinions, I'll not waste any future time or energy responding to you. Whatever. It's all good my man.

I love that I keep hearing Barr's name as one that could fall to us. I would love to see a legitimate outside pass rusher. We haven't had one since Johnny Abe.

I am a long time jets fan from Staten Island. I've followed this board since the Sanchez draft but have been kind of lazy. I honestly think cb isn't as big of an issue as finding a pass rushing olb to really get after the qb and utilizing Darin walls who was better than millner at times along with former first round cbs to defend on the back end. Barr would be awesome. Maybe even reach for attoachu or shazier and then pick up Philip Gaines or Aaron Colvin in the 3rd 4th.
