Equality and dignity vs money. Even if Hooters waitresses are paid well part of their payment amounts to a bribe for putting up with sexual harassment. Or even take Jackass as an example. Some people think it would be awesome to be Steve-O and some people realize that it would suck (for the lack of a better term) to be never taken seriously and be treated like a circus animal. Damn internet won't let me delete the last word I was gonna use one trick pony

Exactly. The NBA did what it needed to do to shift tonight's narrative back to CP3 vs Steph Curry.

But what about the "ownership laws" and "right to free speech"?

    Lol.

He's a franchise owner--the owner of a franchise--not the owner of a building or a piece of real or personal property.

If his franchise agreement (the NBA formation documents and by-laws) have a procedure for removal, being stripped or forced sale, then he'll be removed, be stripped or be forced to sell.

"Ownership laws" (lol) don't protect him.

And if he tries to sue, his pesky franchise agreement (the NBA formation documents and by-laws) will prevent that.

And I'm not sure why anyone mentioned "free speech", the old codger can say anything he wants with impunity with no legal repercussions at all. None.

Of course his club mates, his fellow franchisees, the other NBA owners can inflict whatever punishment they are allowed to under that pesky franchise agreement and that is not a "legal repercussion", that's a contractual issue. He's not going to jail over it.

And yes, I stayed in a Holiday Inn Express last nite.

I'm surprised that no one has commented on the future prospects of the estranged wife as the new owner. It seems she may have known yesterday what Silver was bringing because she kept repeating "I am not a racist" with the conviction of Richard Nixon's "I am not a crook." That could take the final decision on who the new owners would be not as high as the Supreme Court, but as low as Divorce Court.

I'm not saying that his money makes anything he does acceptable. But as you acknowledge, there is a big difference between southern racists and northern racists.

This isn't a guy who is getting pilloried because he fucked somebody out of job because of their race. Which happens every day. He's getting pilloried because he said some stupid nasty shit, in private. There is a huge distinction between the two and the former is much more dangerous and damaging than the latter. Which I'm sure you'd acknowledge.

I'm just having a hard time getting worked up about this.

If you choose to spend your private time with a 20-something twink that is 60 years younger than you and Facebooks and Twitters her whole life to the internet public, is your private time really private?

So what's next, the thought police. All those who have had impure thoughts in your mind, racial, religious, sexual, political etc. please raise your hand. So if you're African American you'd better not tell anyone something like "white guys can't jump" or have a party and not invite anyone white. And tell your girlfriend," I don't like whites so don't have any of them over." A ban for life for saying something in a private conversation. It's pretty scary. Even for a shitheel like Sterling.

I think the next thing is that you should take stock in what you believe and not trust anybody you are around, especially if you are a billionaire that has a lot to lose.

Shit, the NSA has full access to pretty much anything anyone does, so the new standard is that you salute the flag, pay your taxes and pay your car insurance, and if you decide to smoke weed, do it in Denver or Seattle, or you could end up as an unwilling employee of the Prison Industrial Complex.

Welcome the the People's Republic of America.

It's ok to think whatever you want, to say whatever you want.

But if the public outcry crucifies you for it, that's tough darts. No legal ramifications at all, this is a completely public crucifixion.

And there is no such thing as a "private conversation" anymore. Not with today's technology and the access even busted faced 25 year olds have to it.

Btw, black guys can say whatever they want about white folks. It's their penance for 300 years of oppression.

A 80 year old billionaire thinks he can trust a 25 year old skank?

    That's on him.

Bros, I'm not one of these conspiracy theorists. And don't see how the NSA is trying to hump you. How can they listen to all of those phone calls anyways. As far as I'm concerned let them tap into Al Qaeda. That's ok with me. But this is bullshit. The guy does something really bad (slumlord, slumlord) and gets away with it. In that case he acted on his bigotry. He's in good standing. But he says something (just words and in a private conversation) and gets vilified. Esp by guys known for being verbal (NBA players) to say the least. To quote the Bible: Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

Exactly. I'm pretty sure that I said something like this a number of posts ago. I'm not responding to that, however I am responding to a post about the thought police.

Hey bros, do you know what book of the bible are you quoting? Because I don't believe Donald Sterling subscribes to that one. Might want to tweet him that quote.

Sterling could attempt to sell the team to one of his kids. The NBA owners would have approve that though.

    I think it's bullshit and I don't care.

Sterling seems like a huge pile of shit but suspending him for life, suing him from $2.5 mill and attempting to force him out of ownership of a major private property is bullshit especially when you consider it comes from a private conversation. Words not actions...

It's even worse when you consider it was no secret this guy was a racist his whole life. The clips finally get good enough to be relevant so the NBA suddenly decides to take a stand? Talk about being hypocrites.

Personally I think the penalty was a bit extreme. I dont agree with what he said, but I mean, he is paying Doc Rivers millions, Chris Paul millions, both of the race he apparently hates. IDK about you but I dont think its that common to give millions of dollars to someone you dont like. Would a player get a lifetime ban if they said the same stuff? dont think so.

While I don't disagree that it's a bit harsh for what he thought was a private conversation, it's NOT private property.

This is not a building he owns or a piece of property or a car or artwork or jewelry.

It's a FRANCHISE. He doesn't own a piece of private property, he owns the franchise rights to the team and if his fellow franchisees want him out because he's damaging the other franchises or THE franchise as a whole, it's THEIR right and he agreed to it when he joined their club.

A piece of paper has his signature agreeing to it.

The NBA didn't decide to take a stand because he got out of hand. The NBA took a stand because they were about to lose a shitload of money. It had nothing to do with racism. It had everything to do with the bottom line. The playoffs are happening, this is their golden goose.
