Hypothesis 1 - Better linemen improve passing and rushing offense Hypothesis 2 - Better pass rush improves your secondary and Dline Therefore 1st-2nd - big time lineman, pass rusher 3rd - legit 2 dimensional TE... the rest of the draft is icing...WR's, CB's etc Maybe something like this (just did this on mock simulator...got lucky) Your Picks: Round 1 Pick 18: Khalil Mack, OLB, Buffalo (A) Round 2 Pick 17: Gabe Jackson, OG, Mississippi State (A-) Round 3 Pick 16: C.J. Fiedorowicz, TE, Iowa (B) Round 4 Pick 4: Jared Abbrederis, WR, Wisconsin (A-) Round 4 Pick 15: Antone Exum, CB, Virginia Tech (B+) Round 4 Pick 37 (COMP): Trai Turner, OG, LSU (C) Round 5 Pick 14: Brandon Coleman, WR, Rutgers (A-) Round 6 Pick 19: Dri Archer, WR, Kent State (C+) Round 6 Pick 33 (COMP): Seantrel Henderson, OT, Miami (Fla.) (A) Round 6 Pick 34 (COMP): Max Bullough, ILB, Michigan State (B-) Round 6 Pick 37 (COMP): Colt Lyerla, TE, Oregon (B-) Round 7 Pick 18: Walt Aikens, CB, Liberty (B)
That's certainly a distinct possibility. Then again, unless Idzik plans on drafting an OT and having him sit for 2 years, or is ready to bench Brick, or isn't that high on Giacommini, I just can't see him drafting an OL in the first two rounds. I don't think he would draft an OG that high either, at least I hope he wouldn't. Unless they were just blowing smoke, the Jets seemed very happy with the progress that Campbell made last season and seemed pretty happy with Winters. I wouldn't be shocked to see them take another OG somewhere in the 3rd-4th round area or lower, but definitely would be shocked to see them take one any higher as I just can't see any scenario where the BPA at pick #18 or #49 would be an OG. Other hypotheses would be: - Better, faster WR improves the passing game and helps open things up for the rushing offense, which in turn also helps the defense as it should lead to sustained drives, more scoring opportunities and help keeping opposing offenses off the field - Getting a true 2-way TE helps Geno and improves both the passing and rushing offense, which in turn also helps the defense as it should lead to sustained drives, more scoring opportunities and help keeping opposing offenses off the field - Getting a stud OLB pass rushing prospect improves the pass rush, which should help cover up for the secondary's deficiencies and should help create more TOs and stalled drives by opposing offenses and leading to more opportunities for our offense
I didn't notice the mock draft earlier. I'd LOVE it if Mack fell to us and we took him. While I wouldn't be wild about using the 2nd round pick on an OG rather than a WR, I think Jackson's got a chance to be a great OG in the NFL. Would be happy with Fiedorowicz in the 3rd. From there on, I'm much less happy. I don't think there's a need to double dip at OG, so I'd rather take a better WR in the 2nd and just go with Trai Turner in the 4th, even though I don't think he's half the prospect as Jackson. I like Abbrederis, but NOT as the first WR we take. I don't like Coleman much at all, and Archer even as much as I like him, for all intents and purposes is a returner, 3rd down back and gadget player, so I wouldn't like this draft at all at the WR position. I think that would be criminal in a great WR draft like this come out with those 3, and don't think we need to take 3 WRs either. I'd be happy with the Bullough pick, much less so with the Henderson pick, and wouldn't take Lyerla if he paid the team to play for it. As far as I'm concerned you not only wasted a draft pick taking him, but caused needless distraction and problems in mini-camps and TC. IMO you guys need to get over your fixation on him. Aikens would be a nice 7th round pick, but that's awfully late to address the CB position and you didn't address safety at all. That said, I know it's probably impossible for Idzik to address every position of need unless he deviates wildly from his BPA mantra.
Your logic is sound, and within the constraints of the talent in house, is probably followed to a some extent. As for the draft, IMHO there is no way, no how that Mack falls to 18th. If he did I would be thrilled with your first 3 picks. Mack might even go ahead of Clowney and might end up the # 1 pick. If he goes past 5 I would be shocked.
I wanted to take Chance Warmack and Jonathan Cooper last year with our first round picks. Do I win anything? [Even though Cooper was gone, but that's in retrospect] _
If that's true then I'm glad you're not the GM, even if you want to draft a QB every year and recognize Teddy's potential. I think drafting OGs in round one is crazy.
LOVE this draft, if mack fell to us that would be the difference between a good defense and a great one. Next up regardless of who is behind center, Vick or geno, they are going to need time to throw. This draft makes me a little wet in my pants
FWIW, the only trench player the Jets brought in for a visit I believe is Demarcus Lawrence (OLB). Im pretty sure they didnt have an OLman visit or any other front 7 player. This draft is going to be focused on the outside- WR/CB/TEs.
They didn't bring in Sheldon Richardson last year and drafted him early. Visits don't mean draft picks.
