Thanks for the clarification. Those late 80's teams are my earliest memories as a Jets fan..but of course I was too young to really pass judgement on specific players/draft picks.Height is always mentioned among draft misses..his story has always intrigued me.
Yeah this was the Jets era of trying to be cute with their draft picks. They tried to follow the Cowboys who were finding gems in non football factories at the time. The Jets had a chance to get Anthony Munoz, Ronnie Lott and Jerry Rice. In Rice case the wide receiver coach said he wouldn't be able to get separation from the CB. That guy was Rick Kotitte (yikes). Joe Walton also was one of the worst coaches in Jets history yet he stayed on so long.
You don't take a TE in the first round to just block. They can be found in lower rounds. Most Jets fans I've seen post on Jets boards consider him to have been a bust, and I tend to agree with them.
They are morons, don't follow suit. Just because many people expected him to be Tony Gonzales doesn't make him a bust.
While you're right that he wasn't really a bust, I think he was drafted too high for what he contributed. Although I will say that at that time, for the most part, TEs had yet to become the pass catching offensive weapons that they are today. I wasn't expecting Gonzalez, but I was expecting someone with better hands than he had. He dropped a ton of passes if memory serves me correctly.
Yep, he wasn't a good pass catcher, no argument there. Was drafting him in the first round a reach? Yes, no argument there. But he ended up being one of the best blockers this team has ever seen. That's not a wasted pick in my mind.
Not wasted, since he contributed, but they probably could have done just as well drafting a blocking TE in the 4th or 5th round and used that 1st round pick on a better player.
Brandin Cooks for sure he can blow past people and would really improve our short passing game. Him ans CJ on screens Geno will look like a pro bowler
I disagree.Becht was a good player for the Jets. Not only was he a great blocker but he had pretty good hands. Where people got on him was that he was pretty poor after the catch.Lots of clutsy slips & falls after sustaining possession. But he was a legit presence over the middle & especially in the red zone
