If they would have kept it in April like we were used to. I wish they would also go back to the Fri-Sat-Sun format. Tired of talking and blogging about the draft I'm ready for the Jets to make some picks.
Would have been crazy. Yankees play today, and the Rangers are playing the Flyers. But yeah, it should have been today. Freaking Goodell...
I have off thursdays, and work 3rd shift on weekends, so the way it is now is literally perfect for me. Obviously I'm just a random exception, and I agree otherwise that the schedule is crazy.
I like the old format..........Sat: Noon - ? Rounds 1-3 & Sunday 11:00 - ? Rounds 4-7 But it's all about primetime, money & greed.
But it was something awesome like that. It was like one amazing, get fucked up as hell, and enjoy the draft experience. Now it's like, round 1, rounds 2, and 3, rounds 4-7, UDFA. It's too split up. Oh well. It's not like the other days get spent doing anything worth while anyway.
If they had stayed at the old format, the Jets would never have traded up to draft the great Shonn Greene. Count your blessings, Jets fans.
You know it's funny but over the last couple weeks I watched every 2009 and 2010 game and I'm about halfway through 2011, and Shonn Greene is actually underrated for what he did for this team throughout that time. That's not something I really ever expected to say but I definitely stand by it. He was reliable and good at what we wanted him to do. Not the most versatile guy ever, but never got negative yardage.
Greene had his moments, but he wasn't worth the trade up in a period where RB value was on the decline, IMO. A very one dimensional back (couldn't block, couldn't catch) that admittedly sought out contact with defenders instead of trying to improve his game (and yardage for the team) and lengthen his career. I really liked some of the runs he made, the two favorites being the Antonio Cromartie Ole' play against SD and the dagger run against NE that sealed that playoff game, followed by him pantomiming the thumb sucking sleeping baby in the EZ. But he has pretty much limited his career by injuring himself over and over again, which is why he never made it past his rookie contract with the Jets, who traded up for him.
Greene's job on the offense was to seek out contact and punish defenders. He was a very good downhill runner in 2009 and 2010, and he was even good in 2011. You were never going to turn Greene into a feature back, and I think the Jets coaches knew this very well. If Greene tried to change his style to make guys miss, he would have just gotten tackled at the line or for a loss all the time. It just wasn't what his body could physically do. He got a bad rap, and there is no doubt in my mind that is mainly because of Wayne Hunter sucking so badly, combined with Mangold's injury. I'll let you know what I see as I continue watching, but as of now Greene is one of my favorite players on this 2011 offensive squad. Also, Holmes got a bad rap too. The whole captain thing was blown out of proportion, and Derrick Mason was the real locker room cancer. He's the one that pressured Tone and Plax to go talk to Rex about Schotty's offense, and it's why Mason got shipped to Houston straight away. The thing about Wayne Hunter is that he made less physical mistakes than constant and consistently worsening mental mistakes. It honestly looks like he is daydreaming most of the time, constantly false starts, and misses his blocking assignment more often than not. He was responsible for most of the worst hits Sanchez took that year. If I was Tone and we were in week 17 still fighting for a playoff chance and Hunter kept f***ing up with that stupid smile he always had, I'd yell at him too. Sure the 1st down ball drop celebration was kind of annoying, but the more I watch the more I see a guy who really cared and totally got thrown under the bus by the media. I really feel bad for the guy, you could tell he loved being a Jet.
As far as trading up, I'm in total agreement that Tanny needed to do less of that all around, and it's really on him that Hunter turned out so god awful. The guy clearly either didn't care or was as dumb as a box of rocks, either way you don't sign a guy like that to start.
Greene's job early on was as the power back, and he did a good job of it, but it became apparent during 2012 (pretty sure there was an article on it, I might try to find it later if I have some time) that once he hit the second level he was seeking out defenders to hit instead of gaining yardage. That is no RB's job, and it cost the Jets some yardage and Greene some years on his career. Edit: found it http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2012/09/jets_trying_to_get_shonn_green.html
Okay, I disagreed with most of your post but this one was my favorite. You're saying that a RB's job was to seek out contact??? I hope you're kidding. Pretty sure his job is to get yards. If there are running backs who try to find someone to run into, they shouldn't have a job for long.
I said Greene's job, not RB's job. Greene's job as a particular type of RB in a particular type of offense was to take the yards made available by the O-line, make 1 cut if it didn't require a sharp change of direction, and slam into the tackler to gain 1-2 yards, and if he could knock the tackler down and keep running then do that. Greene's physical gifts do not include jump cutting, rapid change of direction, or above average elusiveness. Thus, his role in our offense was to punish any tackler, not try and make him miss. You are probably one of those fans who hates on Holmes and believes what they read in the media.
Where Greene was great was once he got into the second level, he was a steamroller. This made him an EXCELLENT 4th quarter RB when the defense was worn down. But if there was a defender that got into the backfield, he was easily stopped for no gain.
Yes, you are correct about this, but he was a good RB in every quarter when the Jets had the offensive line that could make a hole into the second level for him. The problem wasn't Greene, it's that we didn't have the depth/versatility at other positions that minimized what Greene had to offer. Although in the Sunday night Pats game in 2011 a ball bounced off his hands, then a defender, and then was picked off to change the momentum of the game that could have given us the division lead, so I'm kind of pissed at him for that.
