He reportedly visited the Jets yesterday. Has this been confirmed? Why did he show up? To give Geno sleepless nights? For real or imagined reasons he was invited and I've heard alot of these players who visit are definitely on draft short list. Any thoughts what JI is up to?
He is probably not lasting to the 3rd round. The Jets taking a QB in round 1 or 2 would be very questionable considering they have two capable QBs and the team has bigger needs at other positions. I saw this guy play a full game and he was good in it, but he doesn't handle pressure well. Then again, does any QB handle pressure well? Well, some are worse than others. And that's me responding to me. There is a difference between guys like Dan Marino and Joe Namath and Ben Roethlisberger vs guys like Joey Harrington and David Carr. All five were talented and could play well if they were not allowed to be pressured or hit, but those last two were awful when pressured and harassed in the pocket. Garoppolo seems more Harrington-like than Marino-like to me. I would be very wary of drafting him. I would much prefer the Jets draft Aaron Murray in round 3 or 4. He might drop to the middle rounds due to his injury. Murray is a gamer and I believe he has good pocket presence and will be able to play well in the NFL.
I've said a bunch of times already I wouldn't be surprised if we grab a QB at some point in this draft, I've watch a few games of Jimmy and I can see why he's shooting up draft boards, insanely quick release, great ball placement, reads the defense well, and good mobility to boot. Teddy is a perfect fit for us though, he's been playing the west coast offense in College so he knows the system already it would just be a matter of learning some of the new terminology but he's a bright kid.
Yeah, you have to wonder. There has been hot debate here as to Idzik's experience drafting, but he seems to be adhering to most of the personnel philosophy that the FO in Seattle displayed, and one thing they did was never rest at the QB position. They kept bringing players in until they found their guy. I won't be shocked at a QB in round 2 or 3, although round 1 would raise an eyebrow.
Yeah, it is good to keep drafting one till you know for sure you have a high quality QB. Geno Smith has not proven he is one yet. It is a bit risky taking one in round 2 because the Jets need a WR and S bad and a rookie QB is likely not going to dress for games regularly, but it would not be insane for the Jets to take one early.
A first round pick on a QB wouldn't surprise me if they have one rated that highly on their board and he's available at 18, tough to gauge this QB class though. Geno really didn't do any favors for himself though last year to make taking a QB out of the question.
I may be crazy, but I honestly think that Garoppolo may end up being the best Qb in this class. I would love the Jets to draft him in the 3rd or later even though I have confidence in Geno this year. He could be our Wilson.
I also think we should grab a quarterback prospect if a good one is available. In the NFL, you don't really have a contender until you have a quality QB, so it makes sense to draft a prospect every year until you find a keeper. At this point, if Geno doesn't significantly improve from last year, we got nothing longterm, so makes perfect sense. What I really don't want to see is wasting multiple seasons on a bad QB as we did with Sanchez. We should've went with somebody else a year early with Sanchez, when it was pretty obvious he s not improving. So if it was up to me, this year would decide things with Geno, he doesn't have to become All-Pro or anything, but there has to be a lot of improvement, or if not, we gotta give somebody else a chance.
When I first posted about Garopollo back in January I was saying I thought he would be a good pick up with the Jets second pick in the 3rd round but obviously much has changed since then and I don't think he will make it out of the 2nd round which I think would be too early to take a QB. There seem to be a good selection that will be available in the 3rd-5th round so I think they could possibly pick up one. The question would be do they stash him on the practice squad for a year or replace Simms.
Yeah, that is the only thing that makes me think they won't go QB early. Unless they get Russell Wilson and know immediately that he's the guy, they will have Vick and Geno dressing for games and a high round QB walking around on the sideline in street clothes.
One thing is for sure to me, if they go QB in round 1 or 2, they have definitely put Geno on the shelf and may end up trading him before the season starts. If they really think he is the goods, they will either pass on QB or trade back.
if they have him rated as a 1st rounder and he's still there in the third/fourth, then I don't see why not...I mean the Giants did it with Nassib when they have Eli (although Nassib didn't pan out so far but it's still the same concept)
The pre-draft visits are listed below (from http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/38137/updated-jets-pre-draft-visits) and we've almost exhausted the 30 allowed. It's obvious we are looking at positions of need (WR, TE, CB) the most but also looking at potential sleepers/fallers.
Based on that post of draft visits, looks like we won't. I doubt Garoppolo would be our target in the first
Got to get a killer qb somehow. If the Jets arent sure about Geno, it make sense. And if both Geno and someone else panout? Beautiful....
That idea hasn't gotten any better since the first time you suggested it and Watkins is not a very good QB.
