Which ones do you like for the Jets, and which target round. Dee Ford (1-2) - I doubt Dee Ford will be there at our second round pick but it's not entirely impossible he falls to the second. Ford is a polished pass rusher. Good move off the line, played DE for Auburn but he has said he prefers standing up. I think Rex loves this kid, hard not too. Emotional, physical player. Dominique Easley (2-3) - I'll say this right now. Had it not been for the injuries, Easley would be ranked higher than Clowney. His explosion off the line is second to none. His motor is arguably the best at his position, he also doesn't take plays off like Clowney does. I believe he had two ACL injuries which could scares teams away. Our organization has a knack for keeping injury prone guys healthy. He's worth the risk. At DT/DE he's an immediate plug and play guy. Kyle Van Noy (1-3) - I've been talking up Van Noy since last year. If you wanna know what kind of player he is, load up the Poinsettia Bowl tape from last year. I doubt he falls to the third but he's one of those guys I can't pinpoint at this time.
the fact that u can only list 3 guys tells us all we need to know. this is not the draft to find ur edge rusher.....however i agree with u about dee ford and van noy. they are good players and would be a big asset to any defense. many of us have been begging for the pass rush specialist for years now but it just isn't in the jets cards.
I like Trent Murphy in the 3rd (as I wrote in my mock). When looking at OLB targets I prefer the 3-cone and 20yd shuttle over the 40 time. Murphy was 2nd in 3-cone among LB and DL, clocking in at 6.78, which beat Ealy, Barr, Shazier, etc. He also has the production on the field when he led FBS with 15 sacks last season.
I'd love to add Dee Ford, but don't see any way that can happen. I don't know anything about Easley, but I want no part of him. The Jets don't need another starting DE/DT. Only so many guys can play at a time. It would be wasted pick. The Jets need depth at DE, that it, and you don't use your #1 pick on a depth-type player. I loved Kyle Van Noy earlier, and he may wind up being a solid pro, but I've cooled on him considerably. He just doesn't have a lot of speed and athleticism. He was able to cover collegiate receivers over the middle, but will he be able to cover RBs and TEs in the NFL who are faster than he? I'm sick of slow LBs on the Jets. If they take him in the 2nd I supposed I could be happy about it if he becomes a solid starter, but I'd rather have Jeremiah Attaochu. He has a great motor, speed, and is a very good OLB prospect. I'd also be quite happy with Barr. Barr doesn't have a lot of experience but he has the speed, athleticism and toughness and I think will become a very good pass rusher in the NFL.
I disagree. Just because he can only list three doesn't mean those are the only good prospects. This is a VERY good draft for OLB prospects. It's the best and deepest draft for OLB prospects I've ever seen. More and more collegiate teams are playing the 3-4 alignment, so there are more and more prospects with experience playing the position and one doesn't have to try to project 4-3 DEs as much. Following are more OLB prospects who range from good to excellent. Jeremiah Attochu, GA Tech Trent Murphy, Stanford Trevor Reilly, Utah Carl Bradford, AZ State Demarcus Lawrence, Boise State Marcus Smith, Louisville Chris Smith, Arkansas Adrian Hubbard, Alabama Jackson Jeffcoat, Texas Devon Kennard, USC Khairi Fortt, Cal Prince Shembo, Notre Dame Morgan Breslin, USC James Gayle, VA Tech Cassius Marsh, UCLA Aaron Lynch, South Florida Jonathan Newsome, Ball State Kasim Edbali, Boston College Derrell Johnson, East Carolina Tyler Starr, South Dakota Shaquil Barrett, CO State There is absolutely zero reason why the Jets shouldn't be able to come away with a very good OLB prospect out of this draft. If they do, then it's a fail on Idzik and Rex.
Idzik doesn't pick based just on need, thank God. He looks for BPA, and it could be entirely possible that the BPA at #18 or #49 could be an OLB. The Jets could also take one in the 3rd or 4th round range.
I think it's a unique draft for the stand-up guys. It's weak in the fact that it lacks a 2 way"anchor/pass rush" type. You have guys like Dee Ford & Anthony Barr who can really speed rush but are so-so at setting the edge. And guys like Trent Murphy who don't offer much upside as pass rushers but can be a 3 down player w/ their ability to set the edge. That's why it makes sense to address the need alittle later in the draft. If we can't get a 2 way OLB early why waste a pick? We can get functional pieces beginning in round 4.
He looks for BPA based on need just like any other good GM does these days. Only somebody completely starting over would do otherwise and the Jets are not in that position.
I could have listed more, but I listed three to open the discussion to other users so they can post their favorites.
Really after one draft you can make that assessment? He attacked every Jets need last year with Millner replacing Revis, Richardson to replace DeVito and Geno because Sanchez and Tebow were both failures. All the way down to Bohannon replacing The Terminator John Conner.
I'd go for KVN in the 2nd in a lot of scenarios. He's a polished passrusher with coverage skills which is exactly what the LB corps needs. If Lee or Ebron fell in the 1st it would make it a lot easier to justify a lesser need based value pick in the 2nd. Also assuming Ebron isn't there and ASJ is in the 2nd I'd tend to lean that way instead of KVN but again it would be very tempting to draft him in a lot of other scenarios. I'd also be more inclined to trade up some combination of the 3rd-5th round picks if that occurs to increase probability of adding another starter at G/S/TE/WR/CB depending on what happened in the 1st round in those KVN 2nd scenarios.
I can't see how edge rusher isn't a need. To me it's one of the most important positions on the field in the modern NFL. No player, outside of QB, has as big of an impact on the game as an edge rusher. While other needs may 'seem' more glaring like CB or receiver - those needs shouldn't trump an edge rusher. If Dee Ford and ODB/Lee/Cooks grade out equally we should grab Ford and not even think twice.
I completely agree, I'm a big fan of Dee Ford at #18 even though it is considered a reach by many, Dee Ford is a sack machine.
If you mean that he assesses the needs then takes the best player at those positions in each round, I totally disagree. Based on his draft last year, there's no evidence to suggest that's what he did.
That's ridiculous. Milliner and Richardson were the top players left on the Jets' board. Milliner was not even expected to be there at the Jets pick. That value coincided with need was a serendipity. Geno was a great value. Yes the Jets needed to draft a QB, but could have opted to take a different QB or reach for Geno in the first, but didn't. Bohannon was probably the 7th round pick because Idzik's son goes to Wake Forest.
