Lee was the best collegiate WR in 2012, with Watkins being 2nd - Lee's 2012 season was far more impressive then Cooks. Now last season, Cooks had a really good yr - but the fact that Lee caught over 100 passes in a west coast offense (an offense we run) to be is very impressive and the translation from college to the NCAA will be easier for Lee then for Cooks. You also have to wonder, if Lee were healthy, had an established QB (which durability should also be taken into account), how far apart would those #s be? I believe Cooks played with the same QB? Regarding Lee's hands, right now he's a body catcher - With NFL coaching and high level work ethic, which Lee has... He will take that weakness and eventually it will become a strength. Once Lee refines his technique catching the ball, he's going to be one of the best wide outs in the league - he's going to be a guy that could come in and catch 90 to 100 balls. The man has elite traits, and I noticed people are quick to dismiss those elite traits. The reason he does this though I believe, is to accelerate and take it to the house. He's protecting the football. I like both prospects, but I like Lee's ceiling more in this offense with Decker. His ability to run routes (so smooth), ability to take it to the house, and prove he can carry a load is pretty big. Lee runs the best routes out of any wide out in the draft. I like receivers that run realllly good routes.
If it was between Lee and Beckham Jr, I take Beckham Jr every time... If Cooks is available at 18, I think you have to take him because he can become the next Percy Harvin/DeSean Jackson. Yea he isn't the biggest but he has always been durable and boy can he fly.
Watch this... @2:23 I couldn't believe what I was seeing... This guy has to be a Jet if available at #18... Regardless of who else is on the board.
Agreed. That is an excellent tape of Cooks. Lee also had some great highlight reel. If you are still looking at site plug in Sammy Watkins. This is a true #1 receiver: big guy, great hands, runs over people after the catch. It's probably impossible, but put together a trade package for him.
I think we would have to give up too much to go up and get Watkins.. This draft is so deep, we need those other picks as I feel we can grab 3-4 quality players in this draft. After Sammy Watkins, I would probably rank Cooks as the 2nd ranked WR.. The things he can do after the catch are crazy... Reminds me of a young Steve Smith.
Yet he hasn't produced against top tier competition. Beckham Jr won't be a guy you can count on to grab 80 to 90 catches in a season in my opinion. People love to fall in love with the physical makeup of these receivers, yet fail to look at the #s as well and see that a certain player just hasn't produced in certain circumstances. Beckham Jr is Boom or Bust. Lee vs Cooks in my opinion. Production, upside and versatility.
This is how I rank the three. I would have Lee higher, but that injury in 2013 wasn't good.. How long will he hold up in the NFL? Cooks Beckham Jr Lee Even though I rank Beckham second, he has faced better competition in college than the other two no question.... SEC > Pac - 12
It's a good video although I would say that he may not get as many broken tackles at the NFL level. I like that he competes for those extra yards though. Honestly I think the best thing about that video is it shows how he can adjust on less accurately thrown passes and make the reception or get vertical in coverage (sometimes double coverage) and come down with the ball. Again, not sure if that will happen as often in the NFL with taller and more experienced DBs but it is good to see. I don't think I would be terribly upset if we picked Cooks but he's not my first choice. I think he's going to have to create separation off the line and get balls in space or he's going to have trouble. With stronger and more physical corners at the NFL level that might be harder for him then people think. That or he plays in the slot which isn't terribly valuable to us, I'd rather have Kerley and an equivalent to him playing on the outside than an improvement on Kerley in the slot and Nelson or some other scraps out wide.
He only missed 3 games, he still contributed to the team despite being hurt (knee, shoulder). He's one tough SOB.
Beckham is a good complimentary receiver. Odds are excellent he'll be getting 50-60 catches a year and averaging 15 yards a catch and probably 5-8 TD's on those catches. That's a good receiver and if you don't have to rely on him and you don't need to worry about what happens when the other team shuts him down you take that guy and plug him into your offense every time. If you want him to be a #1, well you'd better hope that he has that in him somewhere and that you get it to come out, because it didn't happen at LSU and as tough as the SEC is the NFL is 10x tougher. That it hasn't already happened suggests strongly that it will never happen. You can teach people to be better receivers but you can't teach them to be #1 WR's. That's part of their makeup or it isn't and for Beckham it hasn't been.
Being reliable, this to me is the stamp of this off-season for players we are bringing in. I think the Jets should not be looking for a complimentary receiver at 18, we need some that can come in and be a threat week in and week out. I don't see that from Beckham, I don't see the consistency from week to week. If we draft a receiver at 18, he will need to be the MAN in 2 yrs. I don't know where Decker will be, but if he's not here we will need a possession receiver to be that complimentary receiver. To me Lee, his instincts, I know don't actually know the guy, but on the field he has that killer instinct, you see it, you know it's about to happen. We need that on this roster. SEC is tough, but the defense in that conference wasn't as good as it was in previous years. Why post in the draft forum if you know nothing about the draft?
IMO you can't guarantee that Lee will be able to make that change. The thing with body catchers is that just maybe they developed that style because their hands aren't that good. Even if his hands aren't a problem, that's a hard change to make for something that's so integral to what a WR does. Cooks doesn't have that problem. He has great hands and has to make no such adjustment. Are you not concerned with Lee's drop rate? 12.31% is pretty awful for a supposedly elite WR. That's a dropped pass every 8 passes thrown in his direction. In Cooks' case, it's a dropped pass every 24-25 passes thrown in his direction. Big difference. That can cost you several games a season. Cooks' route running is every bit as good as Lee's, he has a greater ability to take it to the house, and has proven he can carry the load. Cooks could just as easily catch 90-100 passes. As far as taking it to the house, that's another aspect at which I believe Cooks is better and more dangerous. He's faster and more elusive. Lee might not have nearly the success in the NFL that he did in college where everyone is slower. Lee won't find it so easy to take it to the house in the NFL. Cooks has run a lot of slant routes and I don't think he will have one problem adjusting to the WCO. Cooks is small, yet never been injured. Lee is bigger yet has been. Will Lee be able to stay healthy, or will he always be bothered with nagging injuries? If the Jets take Lee, I will root very hard for him and hope he is everything you say he is, but at this point, I much prefer Cooks or Beckham to Lee.
Tyron Smith, USC, 2011 draft: Pro Bowl Matt Kalil, USC 2012 draft: Pro Bowl If you wouldn't take Marqise Lee based solely on the school he attended, then I don't know what to tell you. For example, would you take Khalil Mack (Univ. of Buffalo) if he were somehow still available at #18? ……thought so.
From what I am reading in news, Cooks would have to fall from # 6 all the way to 18 without being taken. Everyone knows what we should do, the BIG question is are we able
Sorry, but where are you reading this? I haven't seen a single thing putting Cooks as the 6th overall pick. Most mocks and projections I've seen put him at 20th or later. Some not until the 2nd round. Maybe I didn't understand what you were saying.
My mistake. Didn't mean 6th round .What I am saying is that Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and any other team ahead of us who want a good WR may grab him and disregard their other needs. Always a chance.
True there is always a chance, teams have their own boards that don't necessarily match up with everyone elses. Hell, Richardson probably wasn't on a lot of teams radar where he went but he ended up being DROY. That being said if Cooks goes ahead of where many people are predicting him to go that means that someone predicted to go higher will be falling down to us. Even if for some reason there is an early run on WRs and guys like Watkins, Evans, Lee, Cooks, OBJ, etc. all come off the board before us that means someone good will have to fall to us. Hopefully at a position of need and not DT or something.
