Should the Jets draft WR Brandin Cooks?

Discussion in 'Draft' started by JetsxMVP, Apr 17, 2014.

  1. I'm not passing on any player solely for year 1 returns unless he can't contribute at all. That is not the case with Cooks who at the very least is a part time spread formation type whom you can have a whole package of plays for as well as a return ace. That's his floor year 1.There's no shame in the #2 spot being platooned by Nelson/Kerley/Hill if Cooks cant handle the outside year 1. And what about 4 wide formations with both Kerley & Cooks in the slot? How do you stop that?Hows that a bad thing as he develops?

If he's as tough as he showed in college than he's our outside #2 from day 1.There's plenty of size elsewhere in the WR corps to offset some of his lack of height.

What he brings is the one thing this corps lacks that consequently MM's offense needs:A slashing vertical type with YAC ability. Yes there are bigger WRs in this draft but id only put Watkins & Beckham on Cooks level as a ball carrier. If you want to make it about QB fit look no further than Geno's success in college with Tayvon Austin..a similar prospect.

Beckham had a workhorse back and Jarvis Landry using up touches, Cooks was basically Oregon State's entire offense, of course he had more production. Beckham also has an inch in height, a few inches longer arms, 2 full inches more of a vertical, and massive hands. Beckhams hands are even bigger than Mike Evans, those are the hands I want my young QB to have available. He has a much better overall catch radius than Cooks. There is nothing that Cooks can do in terms of "being a complete receiver" that Beckham can't do, and Beckham can run through tackles and make contested catches. Cooks is significantly a downgrade in both of those skills.

We just won't be running 4 wides, Geno isn't ready for for that kind of responsibility. Way more of our offense is going to be coming from our RB's. If we take Cooks, he will be primarily a slot receiver for the beginning of his career. That pushes Kerley basically out of the offense, and he's our second best play maker. Kerley is also too small to handle more than just a couple outside snaps a game. He relies on his quickness to get open, something far more valuable to slot guys. Cooks has the potential to develop into an outside guy, but not in his rookie year. Basically you are resigning your self to having Decker and Hill or Nelson on the outside for most downs and Cooks in the slot. It's just redundant to have Kerley and Cooks, and Cooks isn't going to be BPA at 18. Beckham is at Cooks level in terms of YAC, and he is ready to step in on the outside. Cooks is not. I like Cooks, and most of the things about his game. If we were another team in a different circumstance, I'd be all for him. He just isn't the most valuable addition to the team compared to Beckham, or some of the defensive guys that could be available.

Personally I would rank them: Lee, Beckham, Cooks.

Odell Beckham Jr was LSU's #2 WR in 2011 to Reuben Randle. He was the #2 WR in 2012 and 2013 to Jarvis Landry, who had more catches both seasons, more yards in 2013 and more TD's both seasons.

If you want to draft a #2 WR with the 18 pick then draft Odell Beckham Jr. I'm sure he'll be the Jets 2nd leading receiver behind Eric Decker also.

If you want to draft a #1 WR take Marqise Lee. If you want to draft a guy who might be able to take the #1 job draft Brandin Cooks, but dont be surprised if he turns out to be a slot receiver instead.

It's very clear to me that anyone who tries to claim that Cooks isn't a good fit for the Jets' offense doesn't have one earthly idea what they're talking about and probably should give up watching football. Cooks is the perfect WR for the Jets WCO offense. He gets separation, can run every route, has great hands, is quick, fast, elusive, has awesome YAC ability and is a threat to score from anywhere on the field. Think a shorter Jerry Rice. He's also a lot faster than Rice so is also a receiver who can stretch the field and keep opposing Ds from crowding too many men in the box which works better than a taller WR who can block. Anyone who would pass up a player like this because of any blocking limitation he might have IS nuts and is the type of person who would prefer Hill at WR. Blocking is about all Hill can do at this point.

If I live to be 200, I'll never understand some of the crazy opinions I see expressed on Jets football boards.

Yep, just work Jerry Rice into the argument even though he's not remotely similar to Cooks in style or capabilities.

If Jerry Rice wasn't 6'2" he wasn't Jerry Rice.

If I was you I'd use Mark Duper instead. 5'9", 185 lbs and he had the speed that Cooks does. Much better comparison. Then you can start the "Dan Marino was only incidental to Duper's success" thing so that it makes Cooks look better.

I just think we already have a version of Cooks on the roster in Kerley. Look how much he has been injured also. Now would you want two of Kerley sitting on the sidelines on Sunday? For me its either Ebron/Lee/Beckham. If they go defense the only guys I would want that fills an absolute need is Justin Gilbert.

Name those other receivers. You can't.

At the point of the #18 pick, Beckham is the only other WR in this draft who can come anywhere close to Cooks in speed and explosiveness and the other qualities Cooks has. Watkins is the only other receiver in the draft that is the complete package already like Cooks. Even Evans has more question marks than Cooks. Richardson is fast, but has too thin a frame and doesn't have a fraction of the production or ability Cooks does. Huff is fast, but again nowhere near as good as Cooks. No other receiver comes anywhere close to his speed, quickness, hands and route-running ability as a complete package. Landry has great hands, but is also short and relatively slow. Robinson is bigger and has good speed, but doesn't have the hands or route-running ability. There may not be another WR in the draft other than Cooks and Beckham that have the character those two do.

They're similar in that both had great hands, route-running abilities, were elusive, could take it to the house from anywhere on the field, had great character and work ethic, and perfect fits for the WCO, but then you knew that.

Duper was similar in size and speed, but I don't think ever played in a WCO, so that is not an apt comparison in that regard.

Exactly. Excellent points, and if the Jets add a Niklas, ASJ or Fiedorowicz, then they'll have even more height. What they need is a speedy great YAC type receiver. If it isn't Cooks, then it has to be Beckham. Lee's hands are suspect and he simply doesn't have the speed the Jets need.

OMG roflmao I like Kerley a lot and wanted the Jets to draft him, but he can't carry Cooks jock strap in speed, explosiveness or play-making ability/YAC.

You really gonna compare Cooks to Jerry Rice? Really???

Lee is the better fit because he already has experience in the WCO and showed the ability to play on the outside consistently.

Cooks hasn't proved any of these things

Sorry NC, but when do you become the finally authority on this board? I don't know your history but did you ever work as a scout or GM for a professional team?

Lighten up a bit, it's a forum, and these are opinions based on what other people feel and see for themselves.

And we are talking about the 18th pick here, if he fell to the second and third round and the jets select him I would have no problem with it.

My opinion is that at 18 he is not who I want the jets to select.

And now that you have given me homework I will take some time today and give you my selections at 18 that I would go with.

I know it's a forum where a group of fans are all expressing their opinions, but there are informed opinions and there are ignorant opinions. I'm sorry but anyone trying to claim that Cooks isn't a great fit for the WCO or the Jets' WCO is expressing an opinion that is ignorant of the facts of the matter. It's one thing to like another player better. If you or others had said that they simply don't like short WRs or prefer taller WRs, then fine. That's understandable. 99.99% of the time, I don't want a short WR. I perfectly understand people wanting a taller WR, as that is almost always my preference and has been for years, especially after the Jets had Moss and Coles and other shorter WRs. IMO Cooks is different, however because he IS the complete package in every way but height, and has the blazing speed we need and haven't had since Wesley Walker.

If others had said they would prefer to take Ebron, an OT, a CB, a FS, an OLB at #18. I can also understand, appreciate and respect that. What I can't respect are posts that try to disqualify Cooks by things that simply aren't true and/or ignore facts. There is a poster or two in this thread that continually do that in every thread and have something negative to say about every draft prospect. It gets old. I'm sorry if I came across too harshly to you. It's the totality of some of the ignorance, twisting of or ignoring of facts that got under my skin.

Right!!!! ROFLMAO!!!! Lee is NOT the better fit. He's much slower, has questionable hands, and doesn't have the toughness that Cooks has.

As for the Rice/Cooks comparison, yes Rice is a HOFer, but with the exception of the great speed that Cooks has, I think it is a very apt comparison as the character, skills, route-running ability, YAC ability, toughness, work ethic, elusiveness are all comparable. Those are the qualities that one looks for in a WR prospect. That's what I'm comparing not the size or style or play of the two. I'm sorry if you can't see it. I'm not saying that Cooks will wind up being in the HOF or anywhere near as great as Rice was, but the kid has a chance to be a very, very good and productive WR in the NFL and could have the same kind of impact on his team (albeit to a lesser extent) that Rice had on the 49ers.

Toughness? Lee played with various injures and still played at a high level.

I think Lee is the more physical receiver that can generate YAC just as good as Cooks. Lee averaged 9 YAC last season. That's top 5 among prospects at WR.

A guy that catches 112 passes one year and continues to produce doesn't have questionable hands.

Cooks has not proven to be able to play on the outside consistently. Lee has.

Lee is a warrior and a better fit for immediate production and long term potential

I like how the guy hasn't played a single snap in the NFL and yet you have determined that a veteran NFL who has been one of our best players "can't hold his jock strap"

Yeah, he's really going to go there because he can't make a real argument for Cooks at 18. When you start seeing outright exaggeration in somebody's arguments it's a sign they're short on the real stuff.

I like Cooks, he wouldn't be my first choice at 18 but if he was the choice I would be excited about his explosiveness. I don't see him being the best WR available let alone BPA at 18 though.

Comparing him to Jerry Rice in any capacity is just about the most ridiculous thing in terms of the draft as I've ever heard.
