CJ cant get Rex fired.. Lol. And the way Marty runs his offenses i highly doubt CJ will have a bad year. If anything he will shine on screens and dump passes like shady did in philly
I re-watched some of his highlights from last year and feel a little better about the signing. The guy still has his speed. Maybe not 4.24 but still fast enough to burn opposing LBs and DBs. If our O-Line can open up running lanes, he's gonna be dangerous. An obvious key now is to utilize him in the passing game on screens and dumpoffs, get him into space more like the Titans did with Fitzpatrick @ QB later in the year.
Good analysis here but consider that the Denver game in November (280 yards allowed on the ground, 6.36 YPC on 44+ attempts) skewed the Patriots' overall run defense stats a bit. They 100% sold out on the pass in that game (it was very windy, and Manning had his lowest production of the season) and basically let Denver run it all night against sub-packages. You're correct in that it was a weakness last season, but it wasn't one that really hurt them too much overall. I know you can't throw out one game and spin things that way but, point is, as a Patriots fan, I'm not overly concerned about their run defense in 2014. They will get some guys back, other guys will have more experience, and odds are pretty good that a lot of their opponents will be playing from behind on the scoreboard. Obviously the key for any team like the Jets is to get ahead and try to stay there, and then burn clock. I don't think the Revis signing was any sort of overreaction, personally... they lost their top CB and had to make a move. The only option to upgrade from Talib was Revis. And I'm sure the way the Super Bowl played out had an impact on what they did this offseason. If they want to get by Denver they needed more talent in the defensive backfield. CJ2K was a good signing for you guys, and a badly needed one. Adding a talented WR or TE in the draft will round out your offense pretty well.
People need to understand that Chris Johnson is not going to be used as an every down back here. I keep hearing comments about his age and his knee holding up. In Tennessee, Johnson was the work horse. He took almost every carry and was taking a huge beating behind that offensive line. Chris Johnson will be used as a compliment to Ivory. Ivory is our work horse. He showed this last year averaging near 5 ypc. Chris Johnson will have limited touches and will primarily be used catching out of the backfield.
I don't think so at all. What makes you think this? Because of Johnsons past? That's exactly what it was, his past. Johnson ran for his least amount of ypc last year and barely surpassed 1,000 yards. He had two games the entire season where he had 100+ yards and he is coming off a knee injury at age 28. Am I saying he's done? Absolutely not. But why would you give that same guy, who has a ticking time clock, more carries than a guy like Ivory who is young, rushed for near 1,000 yards, and averaged close to 5 ypc? There is absolutely nothing that tells me Johnson will get more carries than Ivory. People are painting that picture because of his box office name.
the whole washed up debate is so silly. matt forte is 28 and AP is 29, but no one refers to them as washed up. CJ just played with a shitty o-line, i think he still has it
He did have a torn meniscus since week 3 last year while even do relatively minor it takes away some cutting ability so that definitely played some sort of role in his poor year last season.
not carries, touches. that includes receptions. when you factor that in, it is not a stretch to think c.j will have more touches than ivory. 30 runs a game ivory gets 16 c.j. gets 12 but 4-5 screens and dumpoffs powell gets 2 thats not plausible to you?
Agreed, and like I stated way earlier in this thread, it was a minor surgery and shouldn't have any major impact. But it all goes back to my original point. Other than Johnson's past, there is nothing that tells me he will get more carries than Ivory. In fact, it was even leaked that Johnson is looking to get the ball in space. He is going to be used as a pass catching back with a good amount of carries. I don't see him taking the load over Ivory.
Well yeah lol If the op I was responding to was geared towards "touches" in that manner, then yes, I can see that happening. When I hear touches, I think of a hand off. That's just the way I always looked at it. Catches was more of my way of counting that. So if you guys are referring to touches including catches, then yes, I agree. If you are referring to touches as a running back getting the ball handed off, then I disagree. Sorry for my confusion. I wasn't aware of how that word was being used.
If CJ gets back to his old form then I think he will get the bulk of the carries. Just like LT did when the Jets sign him.
Nah probably not, but It's going to be interesting to see what type of formations Marty creates with CJ and Ivory. Definitely expect a few jet sweeps, power sweeps and even some read option.
LT had a great first month but was pretty mediocre most of the season after that. I think Johnson will play a similar role but I expect he'll be better.
I was another one that didn't like the way Idzik was going. He had all that money and let players slip out particularly CB's Revis, Cro, but he's done pretty good so far. We really have a big hole in CB with Milliner being the number one CB. It doesn't matter how good your DL is if the backs suck, but we'll wait and see. We might have to sign a CB at number 18 and take a WR in the second round. TE, who knows, but we are improved, I love it.
