They liked him because they gave him a contract in the first place and then stuck with him after his off field issues. You dont bring guys in who you dont like. If Goodson didnt have those problems last year he most likely would have been seeing more reps then Powell to start the season. What the Jets feel about both players at this point in time is anyones guess. I'm just speculating.

To me Powell is what he is. An average RB in a league full of them. He doesnt do anything all that well. He can produce decently behind a good O-Line. He's not great at doing anything. He's a third string RB. I'd rather take the guy who the Jets feel can be a big weapon for them. I don't know for sure if thats Goodson, i'm just saying if the Jets think Goodson is explosive (like we heard last off season) then it would be dumb to cut him for Powell cause "Powell is a more ideal backup". Guys like Powell aren't that hard to find.

If the Jets still think Goodson can be a weapon catching the ball out of the backfield for them, i'd rather go with that guy.

I agree but Goodson legal issues is the reason he will be cut.

Yup had a nice day vs a garbage Packers defense....barely beat the Tebow led Broncos in a game Tebow was absolute shit in. Didn't look better than Geno vs the Falcons or Geno vs the Bills but okay. I'd like to think Geno Smith's stock and demand is higher than Kyle Orton's right now and I don't like to write off a QB in his rookie year(The great Kyle Orton got carried to wins much worse than Sanchez year 1 in Chicago before being replaced by REX GROSSMAN) who had shit weapons and no Dez Bryant or Jason Witten at his side.

Thanks. Don't know what that has to do with anything, btw.

he liked him at near minimum salary, he liked him after he took less this offseason. He's not in the future plans.

Goodson was going to be our 3rd RB last year mostly catching passes. Johnson would fill the pass catching role, it makes no sense to keep Goodson over Powell. That just means we would need to draft another RB.

Johnson is an immediate upgrade, filling a void in the pass catching out of the backfield department. This void has been present since Tomlinson left.

I'm not sure how people have not seen the problems this void presents. Not having a receiving RB is a major issue when you don't have a safety blanket TE.

You need check down option if your blocking breaks down or your WRs are smothered.

I agree. the Jets O is in dire need for upgrades. A homerun receiving option out of the backfield is exactly what they need (along with a complete TE).
2 years, 9M for Johnson would be a very fair deal, especially if they don't tie it all up in guarantees.
i think that would get it done too..

I thought you asked what have they won lately..anyway, Jennings also to the Giants, Jackson to Washington, Maclin to Philly (not sure we ever had a chance but we did have interest), Talib to Denver, Davis to Indy and we should have broght back Cro after getting shut out on the others. That's a few, there are probably more.

Johnson has never been a good pass catcher though, expecting him to be one at age 29 is hoping a lot. Powell and Ivory certainly are not. Goodson is probably best suited for that role.

Goodson was expected to see a decent amount of playing time last year. That's what everyone was saying. We never got to see it play out.

He liked him after he took less this off season true. He still could have just cut him and been done with it.

Agreed, I think thats probably what's going to end up happening. I'm just saying hypothetically if he doesnt end up getting cut.

Johnson at 80% of what he was is a good asset to have, but how much is that worth?

That extra 20% is the difference between good and great, and good can be had for $3-4 million. The question that has to be answered by the jets is how much is his actual decline. Are we getting someone at only 80% of their peak, or us he still 90% of what he was? How much is it worth to find out and possibly be wrong?

Johnson is a playmaker w/ the ball in his hands. he may not be McCoy or LT catching passes but he can do it and immediately upgrades our RBs.

Johnson has averaged 45 recs a year, Goodson has 61 total for his career.

I'm ok w/ Goodson but Johnson is a big upgrade and who knows if Goodson will recover from the injury and is he worth it w/ all the off field stuff?

Wait Chris Johnson isn't a good pass catcher? Guy routinely catches 75% of the passes thrown to him and averages in the 40's for receptions per year throughout his career.

Powell can do a little bit of everything well. He plays hard, is durable, and doesn't have any holes in his game.
also can back up both Ivory and Johnson (if we got him). that's a good reliable role player.

can't say the same for Goodson, who is injury prone, and is a jail and/or suspension risk. He can catch passes, but can't get on the field, which doesn't help us at all. He'd be the guy cut, not Powell.
IF the legal troubles cleared up, no suspension was handed down, the ACL responds extremely well, and he tears it up in camp, then we'd possibly keep all 4.
    that's a lot of If's though.

I agree with your assessment. I believe he should be worth 3.5 million/year with incentives.

Agreed, which is why I want Johnson on the team. With the ball in space he can be a big playmaker for us.

Goodson hasnt seen a lot of playing time early on in his career. I'm really just going off of what people think he brings to the Jets and what we've seen him due in a very small sample size.

I agree that Goodson might not/probably isnt worth all the off the field risks. I'm just speaking hypothetically if the Jets decided to keep him and he doesnt end up going to jail.

I just dont think it should be a foregone conclusion that Goodson should get cut and Powell should be given that spot.

It had to do with asssessing Decker's performance in Denver.

You misstate the connection between Orton and Grossman. First of all that occurred in Orton's rookie season, where Grossman was first string in pre-season, but got hurt, clearing the way for Orton to start, and Orton went 10-5 as a starter. Sure he did not have great individual stats in his rookie year. But that was his rookie year.

As for Grossman, you can diminish him all you want but he was a first round pick who eventually led the Bears to a Super Bowl. He returned to the starting lineup over Orton when his broken ankle healed, in game sixteen, and then in their playoff game. I don't see how that says anything negative about Orton as compared to Smith. You are too emotional in defending Smith.

As for liking to think something, that doesn't make it so. Only Jet homers are really high on Smith. He's as likely to be out of the league in two years as to be a successful NFL Qb.

So the answer to not knowing is to continue sitting on all that cap money and do nothing?

Johnson played with a bad knee for the last 13 weeks of last season (and played anyway). Nobody knows what he has left and to say he is in decline or going downhill or 80% of what he used to be is crazy until we see what he is when he is healthy again. Is he ever going to rush for 2000 yards again, of course not but neither will anyone else..

We can't prove who plays harder then anyone else. Powell's hole in his game is that he doesnt do anything really well. He's an average player. Could he turn into more? Possibly. But Goodson hasnt had a chance to show what he can do when given a bigger role in an offense. Goodson can backup both Ivory and Johnson as well. And might be more explosive, something i'd value over a "reliable" player who is average.

I don't care about having a "reliable" backup. I want explosive players, something Goodson could possibly be in the role he plays

I'm not saying Goodson isnt going to be the cut guy. Once again, i'm speaking hypothetically, in the off chance that Goodson doesnt end up going to jail.
