The truth about this conversation is that it's obvious this year is a much better crop of QB prospects than last year. It happens. 2012 was a better year than this one. Some of these guys won't work out, some will, but there are significantly more guys with potential than 2013. I'm really not even sure why this is a debate. 2011 had a lot of potential too, some worked out and some didn't.

He has potential to play in the league, the thing is there is so much potential across so many positions it's a complete crapshoot to guess where a guy like Fales will be available. I don't think there are QB's outside of 1st and 2nd round talents that have higher upside than Geno Smith, especially considering Matt Simms has shown enough to be considered a developmental talent with potentially high upside. Drafting a QB prior to the 6th round really is unlikely for the Jets this year, because it really just doesn't make sense. We absolutely won't carry 4 QB's on the roster, so either Simms or the rookie is going to get cut anyway. I think Smith will be the guy the next few years at least, but I think there is a legitimate chance Simms could be turning some heads in 2 years or so. People who say Simms would win the job in a fair competition this summer don't know what they are talking about, but that doesn't mean that he is worthless or that he can't become something.

Because posters that feel the need to feel better about Geno need to diminish any QB that could potentially be better. Weird silly defense mechanism.

Whatever. I consider Geno a good prospect with some minor maturity issues, at least in terms of what he was as a draft prospect. Once Manuel was selected over him, it was more circumstance that he fell to the Jets than the fact that he wasn't a good prospect. The only team that probably would have considered taking him before us in round 2 would have been Jacksonville, and I guess they were pretty high on Jonathan Cyprien. He's a legitimate safety, so this season may have them kicking themselves or patting themselves on the back for passing on Geno there. Geno was a solid prospect who really shouldn't have been starting week 1. The point is dumb anyway because whether or not QB's from this year end up better than Geno is meaningless, it's about the number of overall prospects who could start in year 1 or 2 in 2013 (Manuel, Smith) vs in 2014 (Bridgewater, Manziel, Bortles, Carr, Mettenberger, Garoppolo). There are even more who will be given opportunities to develop as well. Geno could easily end up better than pretty much all of those guys. That doesn't change the fact that this is a better year for QB prospects.

I don't care about this year. I care about finally finding an elite guy. Nobody knows anything for sure. JMHO.

The only two guys I consider to have a better chance of becoming elite than Geno are Bridgewater and Manziel. Geno is right there with everyone else in terms of elite potential.

We're not drafting a QB in round 1 and outside of Bridgewater none of the other prospects are better than Geno.

You do the opposite you diminish Geno and prop up a bunch of unproven guys.

No we're not, but yes they are.

My only diminishment of Geno has been twofold--low football IQ and a lack of awareness of where he is on the field. I watched him a LOT in college, saw him live a bunch of times. Great arm, tough, nerves of steel.

And every guy in college is unproven--folks here are touting Clowney as the greatest defender since LT. Guess what--HE'S unproven and GMs are calling him a lazy dog. Nobody is saying that about any of these "unproven" QBs.

No they aren't. Bortles is the next Gabbert, Manziel's ceiling is Doug Flutie at best. Geno has a strong arm, is a threat with his legs, and has a great work ethic. Unless we're getting Bridgewater I'd rather stick with Geno and develop him.

Like I said you prop up this draft class and try to diminish Geno. I read that you think his running ability is "overrated" lol.

I don't think Idzik would even consider Fales. We've already seen that a weak-armed QB won't cut it in the Meadowlands. I loved Chad more than most Jets fans, but don't want another Chad-esque QB. It just limits the offense too much, gives the D too much of an advantage knowing that there are certain routes the QB can't throw, the offense won't run, so they don't have to worry about defending those routes. They can stack 8-9 men and dare the Jets to beat them with Fales arm. I want no part of that and would hope that Idzik wouldn't either.

His running IS overrated. He looks awkward. That's not a bad thing, he's just not dual threat QB like Kaep or Wilson or Cam. He's a pocket passer, he should stay there.

That's a funny comparison, Bortles and Gabbert. Too funny, actually.

Btw, neither you nor anyone else knows Manziel's ceiling. He may be a total bust, he may become the most dynamic QB in the league. I get that you hate the guy, but NOBODY has any idea which way this guy goes. Biggest enigma in a while.

He's no Kap, Cam or Russell. But to say his running is overrated is wrong. Look at his TD run in the 2nd NE game. He made a guy miss. In that same game look at his big run on a 3 rd and long play.

It's the little things like that plus his ability to throw that makes me want to keep him around and develop him. Outside of Teddy none of the other prospects are better IMO.

I don't hate him lol. I think he's overrated. But I hope he and Bortles prove me wrong.

Question, don't you think that Geno could improve on his running? I think he looked awkward because he wasn't used to doing it, so hadn't developed the instincts and confidence. It's a weapon that can help keep opposing Ds honest. I love the fact that he looks to pass first and foremost and only runs as a last resort, but I hope that MM will call QB draws or option runs early in games to plant that securely in opposing D's psyches. With some work, I think he could look much more natural, develop some instincts, and be better at it.

To be clear, I don't want a Vick-type QB who looks to run first, but I DO want a QB who is a dual threat. I think it can be huge for an offense. It can be, and usually is, huge in picking up key 1st downs and in the Red Zone.

Yes, there are some risks involved, but as long as they're smart about it and Geno slides to avoid taking big hits, the odds are that he'll stay healthy. What's the point of having Vick here if it isn't to help Geno develop his running ability? That would have been like having Ed Reed on the team last year and not letting him share his knowledge, expertise and experience with the other DBs. As a corollary, I also think working on his running and when to run could help Geno's pocket awareness/presence.

If Mettenberger could fall to the JETS in rd 3, I'd be PUMPED. I do think he needs some seasoning, but I think he has the goods to be a good NFL QB down the road & riding the pine due to his knee injury will be ok for the future. For the JETS sake, hopefully said injury lets him slide down a ways but I think he probably goes before then though.

I think in the beginning of the year he had a couple really awkward runs.

By the end of the season, I thought his running was greatly improved. He's pretty good at getting guys to miss and he's a big strong guy. He's slowly growing into the QB he needs to be.

I don't think I'm touching a QB with our 1st unless its Bridgewater. I might take Manziel/Carr/Bortles if their there in the second. And then Mettenberger/Garrapolo perhaps in the 3rd. I am expecting a QB to be taken somewhere in this draft, but I would guess not until later in day 3.

I'm cool with Geno though, at least going into this season as the starter. His second year in the league and the Jets have improved his supporting cast. If he blows it now, he has no excuses.

I agree that Mettenberger has a lot of talent and potential. The problem is that I don't think he fits a WCO at all. If the Jets draft him with the intention of developing and then trading him for a #2 or a #1 pick, fine. If they think they may scrap the WCO at some point, then that would make sense, although I hope they don't. I love the WCO. I like Mettenberger a lot as a prospect, but don't think the Jets should draft him.

I don't think QBs in their early 20s develop into running threats. I don't think it's a skill that drastically improves--I think it's instinctual and as such does not really lead itself to development. I've never said he's a bad runner, never said he's a statue, I just think guys here are overrating it because he had some success doing it. I just think he's awkward at it--just the eye test. Running a naked bootleg in the first series or two (which MM did a lot last year) to some success does not make Geno a threat to run. I think it's a surprise that teams are not looking for. If MM calls 4 or 5 a game he's not going to be as successful doing it IMHO.

He's not a dual threat guy. He's a pocket QB with some mobility.
