he only made an offer to Rodgers-Cromartie and he wanted him at his price. why would we overpay for a guy that has ben on 4 teams in 4 years and contemplated retirement recently? If he wanted him he could have spent more and would have had him.

You are right here, but only so far as it goes. Yes, the Jets are not in the same situation as Denver and NE. But the larger principle was whether successful teams EVER are more active in FA than the average, and the answer in fact is yes.

The real point should be WHEN should a team be active in FA. I think it not unreasonable to say that a team with only the regular alottment of high draft picks but with several holes on the starting roster, that also has an above average amount of cap space, and wants to field a successful team, might at least consider being more active than a team that does not fit that description.

He had the offer before he was cut if reports can be believed.

Neither team has been very active in free agency historically, during the periods when they were very good. Both have a 35+ franchise QB about to decline now and are operating in a very narrow window to get one more championship out of them before they go. Neither is likely to succeed. Neither BTW have been big players in free agency recently.

The Pats signed Amendola last year but you'd have been screaming at them because they let Welker go before they did that.

The big winners in free agency recently have been teams like the Eagles (Reid got fired), the Fins (Ireland got fired), the Bucs (Domenik and Schiano got fired.) That's how it usually works.

The big winner in free agency in 2008? The Jets. Mangini got fired and then 4 years later Tannenbaum followed him out the door.

Its not over dramatic. The post was geared toward his past responses over the last two months, or however long he's been here. Look, when I respond to an insightful post and a meaningful post, I respond in a respectable manner. As of late, some of the posters on here are absolutely ridiculous. Guys claiming Idzik is a putz because he won't spend a ton of money, guys immediately making assumptions on non facts, etc etc. It has become a trolling matter that is damaging this forum. When every thread is derailed because of the same handful of posters going back and forth professing their bullshit, my patience runs real thin. If you want to troll on here, I'll troll you back. (not you but the posters I am referring to)

I don't criticize the people on here who provide insightful posts and opinions.

It's like an uneducated person who consistently talks shit about a certain thing you love. At first, you argue back and make a case for yourself. When that uneducated individual just wants to ignore facts and continue to talk shit, you get agitated and start attacking them. Is it right, no lol but it makes for fun amusement.

So, since you do not ask questions, regardless of what answers you come up with, I take it you see your role here as an FO Homer to attack people who do ask questions.

Seeing as how that is what you are doing, can you confirm that you see it that way yourself?

You're not worth responding to. You've identified yourself as such.

you are leaving out one additional factor to consider when a team should participate in free agency -- the quality and value of the free agents available. absent of that, your scenario is advocating that if you have holes and have needs you should be active regardless of whether the players are worth signing.

You identify correlations and think they establish causation. The huge element missing in 2008 was that Favre got hurt. If he had not the Jets would have likely made the playoffs, and Mangini would not have gotten fired.

As for Tanny, get real - he was fired for several reasons, but the main one was the Sanchez contract extension, which was not an FA move at all.

but we did have 2 cracks at reaching the SB and would have been 3 cracks if Favre didn't sabotage our 2008 season.

Point to the team that is very good that uses veteran free agency in a big way to advance that cause. It just doesn't happen. The big spenders in free agency are the teams that can't get over the top.

They're half pretty and half dressed to prove it.

Who says he was overpaid? By what standard do you judge that, Idzik's? When did he become the expert GM?

    Blue,

You are one of the more intelligent posters here. Did you not see I said such a team should CONSIDER being active in FA?

As for those prospects who were available and signed elsewhere who could have helped the Jets, have you reached the conclusion that ALL of them were overpaid by those other teams?

Perhaps that might be true, but i doubt it.

So now who is citing opinions as facts?

If I were you I would log off, take some time and regroup.

problem is you spike your position of Idzik with emotional descriptions like "failure" to sign. "failure" to sign clearly intimates a lack of ability to accomplish a task. that may not be accurate. Idzik can choose not to match an amount offered if he doesn't believe Johnson is worth that amount. in that situation, failure is hardly the apt description, and yet you are ready to describe any possible scenario in which Johnson does not sign as indicative of a failure on Idzik's part rather than the equally possible alternative -- a choice not to engage in any subsequent bidding wars once his offer is made.

    What? God you are awful.

You went on a rant about what I am and how I operate and what my role is here, and you were wrong. That is fact. Actual fact, no Big Blocker fact.

Also, no coincidence that in the second line of someone responding to one of your posts you can find the phrase "that may not be accurate". I've watched from afar for years and always laughed at the debates you would find yourself in, promising myself I'd never take your bait. Yet, here I am. I blame myself.

    That's a fact.

I'm not saying break the bank to sign guys. But giving CJ another million a year is not going to break the bank. It fills 2 needs... A RB and a home run hitter.

I honestly don't know if they were overpaid. But I will wait and see how they perform before lamenting not signing them in conjunction with waiting to see how Idzik does in filling out the roster come the start of the season. I just don't have a need to draw a conclusion on either at this point.

free agency is a fun distraction, but not my interest in the Jets. what happens on the field is what I care about, and we are 5 months away from that occurring.
