Very interesting and revealing. I question everything. I take nothing on faith about the Jets, the way they are run, how they approach things. Why should I? You on the other hand are saying you don't look at the way they are run, and ask yourself anything about it. That makes you an FO Homer, and that is, in fact, a fact. You can question them and answer that it looks like they are doing okay, or you hope they are, not really knowing. But if you don't even ask questions, then yes, you are the very definition of an FO HOmer.
But what's the track record? Idzik not signing Revis for $12 mil when we are in rebuild mode? Idzik missing out on DJax as he signs a backloaded deal with the Redskins? You have no idea how the DJax situation played out. How do we know the guy didn't have tunnel vision, setting his sights on the Redskins because they are a division rival in a high-powered offense?
Point to the good team that is very active in free agency. If you could do that then the argument that the Jets being fairly passive is a bad thing would hold more water. Veteran free agency is a sucker bet. The teams that spend heavily there are the teams that have a bad long-term plan. They're compensating for their failure to develop resources over time. Now and then a team has a very narrow window and makes a big commitment in free agency to get over the top. Those are very special circumstances and they rarely succeed.
But has no clue about how they will get over the hump. You wouldn't be screaming at the Jets failure to buy veteran free agents if you knew how that turned out most of the time. Go look at the free agency winners of the last decade year by year. You'll see far more disappointment than triumph in their results.
Dude, you're unbearable. For about the third time on one page, you made your opinion fact. Just because YOU think people need to question the front office with every move they do or don't make DOES NOT MAKE THAT A VALID OPINON. You realize I can say "oh, you question the FO at every turn, even when logic says it's the right move, you're just a hater" and it would be just as valid as what you just said to me, right? Let me break down my OPINION for you, to help you understand: Idzik has been in a personnel position in three front offices, two of which have either been to or won the Superbowl with a roster that he had a hand in assembling (whether it be personnel or cap wise). What he's doing replicates what the Seahawks did. They made NO splashes in free agency, they kept their books clean and they built through the draft. In my OPINION, there is no need to question moves he has or hasn't made, especially when every single one of them has a logical reason behind it. You can not like it, but that doesn't mean it's bad.
Seems like you're the type that will get out the pitchforks when Idzik does something "wrong" (in your opinion) but if he does something right he'll get no credit. I'll admit that Idzik fucked up if CJ2K signs for less than 2 years 10 million elsewhere. I expect you to admit you're wrong if we land him.
he didn't want them, we'll see if that is good or bad down the road. to say he screwed up isn't being fair. the man has a plan and is following it, I applaud him for not bowing down to the nonsensical pressure of everyone else. If he has good drafts(seems to be 1 for 1 so far) we'll be a top team for years not up one year, down the next.
We had the 6th ranked rushing attack last season with Geno,Powell and Ivory if we add Johnson we should easily have a top 3 running game and a much improved passing game out of the backfield
First I don't go back and look at past FA or drafts when we have a new GM. It like saying you don't draft a player because his school has a history of putting out bust at that position.
Brad, I know you want to tie in your understanding of specific issues to broad principles. And in so doing you are adamant in refusing to accept or acknowledge facts that don't fit your principles. For example you think cornerback is a relatively unimportant position, and that in the past affected your assessment of, for example, how negotiations with Revis should have been viewed. As for FA, you don't like teams that are "very active in free agency." But the choice is not one between overspending wildly and doing very little. So there's that to start. And of course letting veteran players go, leaving holes in the starting roster, is a form of inaction that nonetheless takes place in the context of FA, too. Strictly speaking inaction is not action, but a failure to take action has its own consequences in FA. The Jets cut Cromartie, then by all reports seem to have approached other FA Cb prospects, all the while knowing they have several holes to fill on Offense, and no more in the way of high draft picks than any other teams. Even Revis could have been signed, but that he specifically was not is not the point. The point is Cro was cut, signed elsewhere to a very reasonable deal, the Jets failed to sign anyone else despite having approached them, all while sitting on a pile of cap space, and as of today do not have more than one starting quality Cb on the roster. I don't know what to say if that set of circumstances does not raise a question in someone's mind about what is going on.
He didn't want them? Then why waste your time making a offer? He didn't want D-Jax or Revis because he never called them. IMO that not wanting someone.
Are you really comparing the 2014 Jets FA situation to the 2014 Patriots and Broncos, both with aging future HoF QBs trying to get one last SB at the risk of future cap issues?
I'm with you. No one can claim he f*cked up until he actually does. I'm OK not going after Jackson, I'm worried about CB, and probably would not have been able to resist Revis if I was the GM (Idzik would have been a HERO here, but would that have been the best long-term solution?) I would sign Chris Johnson but clearly Idzik wants him on his terms. Waiting a week to talk with him was a good move since he allowed CJ to get a better grip on what he's worth. I am surprised that he left without a contract yesterday, but if he gets two years somewhere else so be it. Our GM has a plan, and we have to allow him to execute it. Hopefully these moves, or non-moves allow us to lock-up our talent. That has to be part of the plan.
