They usually do. It's their way to get you to stay until they got a replacement. You're still gone, but on THEIR terms, when your replacement is in place and trained.

Oh, I might be late mentioning it now but sometimes when you give your two weeks they will say something to the effect of "well, you don't have to come in for the next two weeks if you don't want to" but if you agree to that you are also agreeing not to be paid for those two weeks. If they specifically tell you not to come in then they have to pay you but if it's your option then they don't. I guess the idea is that people aren't really typically productive when they are leaving a job and it's not like they can fire you for not being productive as you're leaving anyway so they try to get out of paying you 2 weeks of salary for minimal productivity.

If you are a productive worker many times they will. My son actually called me yesterday in regards to something similar. The restaurant he is a cook for has recently lost 3 other cooks and my son was looking elsewhere also. He let the manager know that he had some interviews but did not have anything offered yet, the manager told him to come up with a number that would keep him there and he would make it happen.
My son is still in college and though he works a decent number of hours is not full time so I was pretty surprised they are doing this.

On the other hand, years back a company I was sales manager for decided to change the commission structure after I brought the sales up 50% in my first year and 45% my second year in the position. I let the owner know if they followed through with the change I would leave. Long story short they followed through, I left along with the purchasing manager, we started our own company and took about half his business with us. He should have made sure he had a copy of the non compete agreement in a safe place.

i work in a kitchen right now as well and was one of the main guys they counted on every week but they simply dont have the ability to offer me what this new job can. i would stay on if they could but like i said, i work 40 hours a week just about right now and i make less than half of my new salary (not including the benefits package)...

anyway, i put in my notice last night and the managers were upset. my direct boss was speechless at first but ultimately they said they are happy for me and whatnot. i can definitely sense the mixed feelings though. i know that they are all happy im moving up but the bar and service managers are upset, probably because they relied on me more than anyone else for what they needed during service haha.

everyone i work with pretty much agrees id be stupid not to take the offer so there arent any hard feelings. glad that its over with.

thanks everyone for all the recommendations

i pretty much said what you guys suggested and it went very well. the only thing is i did talk to them about how much im making because they wanted to see if they could match it or anything, but once i told them the numbers they were all pretty resigned to the fact that im leaving.

Judging from your previous posts I thought that would be the case but you really did it the right way and let them approach you with the hope of trying to keep you. Smart guy. You will go far
