Matt Ryan was never the prospect of Teddy--he never had the arm talent or the athleticism of Teddy, not even close. Teddy has more than an adequate arm while Ryan's biggest weakness was his weak arm. He went as early as he did because Arthur Blank needed a pure wholesome face of the franchise to get rid of the Michael Vick issue. And because he had the prototypical QB measurables. _
Matt Ryan is pretty good, I think the comparisons are fair. I think Teddy does things better then Matt Ryan and vice versa. Teddy def has a stronger arm, that guy can fit a ball into some really tight windows, Ryan can't do that.
I didn't say Ryan isn't any good--I just don't think they are a very good comparison at all. Teddy has MUCH more arm talent, is much more athletic and mobile. Ryan is physically bigger. Both have high football IQs. Pigeon-holing them together is just forcing a comparison for no reason. _
Ah ok, I see where you are coming from. I think we are comparing the two - not because of what they bring to the table on the field but their stock prior to the draft. They aren't the next Peyton Manning, Andrew Luck, or John Elway prospect level, they are a tier below that in my opinion. Stock wise, you put Matt Ryan, Rivers, Eli Manning, and Bridgewater in that stock class if that makes sense. They have some sort of small flaw but that won't stop them from being a great NFL QB. Just not an all time great. Bridgewater isn't an all-time talent like Manning or Luck but he's going to be really good in the NFL and he will help a team win a lot of games. That still should make you a top 5 pick.
Yeah, I've never put Teddy in the class of Manning or Luck. I just think he's going to be a true franchise QB in his own right--somebody that is deserving of building around. He's going to be a guy you win BECAUSE of, not in SPITE of. _
And you're right, and that's just absurd. There isn't a single senior QB mocked to go in the 1st round at this point. What are the odds on that? This may be the weakest QB class since 2005.
I do like your gouping though--so yes I'd put Teddy in a group with Ryan, Rivers, Eli and much higher than a Tanneyhill or Dalton or guys like that. He's a franchise guy. _
Too funny, the truth comes out. There are probably 5-6 QBs better than anyone from last years draft (well, other than Geno of course). _
No way is EJ Manuel, Geno Smith and Mike Glennon better then Bridgewater, Carr and Manziel. Last year had an awful class. The one with Locker, Gabbert and Ponder was even worse. Urgh. Being a senior has no bearing on this. Look at the prospects that decided to stay another year for that glory senior year. Barkley, Leinart - can't blame these players for leaving early!
That class had Newton, Dalton (both went to Pro Bowl) as well as Kaepernick (super bowl and NFC champ game last 2 years)... Mallett also may be good, we don't know. Just has to do with the order they were picked. Bad decisions by the NFL GMs.
Crap forgot about Cam Newton / Kaepernick. Not really a fan of Dalton, I think if he keeps up his inconsistent performances and awful playoff performances he'll be a backup soon.
I think the Bengals take Carr at 24. They have a good team must be tired of Dalton holding them back in the playoffs. Carr brings a QB with a legitimate NFL QB skill set. Dalton doesn't have that 5th year option so if they want to extend Dalton they would probably do it this season. If he doesn't do well, they will be drafting around the same place and there may be even less viable QB's. If they draft Carr, let Dalton walk in FA, he can go be a back up or someone else's starter.
I agree with you guys that Dalton is holding Cincy back and they should consider his his replacement this year, but he's loads better than the three stooges listed above.
Locker is the only guy I'm still holding out hope for. He came into a much worse situation than Dalton did, and he showed something last year before the injury. I think the two teams that took the other guys are going QB in round 1 this year. I think we all know the Texans are going to take Clowney at this point, he's too good, and Brooks Reed and Whitney Mercilus have been underwhelming as pass-rushers. I think the Rams taking Watkins is better for their team than trading and taking any other player. As for the Jags, Henne is being paid under 6 million. The cheapest legitimate starting QB in the league that isn't on a rookie contract is Alex Smith at 8 million, hand he's due for a raise very very soon. The Jags saying Henne is the guy going into the season has got to be a screen. If the agent knew Henne would probably be starting, he doesn't settle for multiple years at such a low rate. Bridgewater is the most pro ready, and the stuff about his accuracy is overblown. He has a really good football mind and all the physical tools for a franchise QB. The Browns have got to go Manziel next, he's the second most pro-ready, his ability to make plays on his feet is a great attribute for playing in the bad conditions of Cleveland and the AFC North, and he would bring excitement to that town like they haven't had since LeBron. The Raiders are paying Schaub starting money, and Maxk is probably the best player on the board. Their LBs are old and not really that great in general. I think Bortles goes to the Vikings at 8.
I can't figure out the ulterior motive of posters dumping on this QB class without anyone being drafted, having played a down in the NFL. Sounds like wishful hoping more than anything analytical, like most of the stuff being made up these past few months. I find it quizical that anyone would say that this class is less than stellar but actually comical that someone would call this the weakest class since 2005. Considering how crappy last years draft was. Seriously, other than Geno who is obviously awesome, the rest of the class was possibly the worst ever. Let's revisit: EJ Manuel (seriously Buffalo, wtf?) Geno Smith (clear future HOFer) Mike Glennon (TB finds his successor this year) Matt Barkley (horrible) Ryan Nassib (stiff) Tyler Wilson (cut, seriously, cut) Landry Jones (awful) Sorenson, Dysert, Daniels, Renfree (oooof) Tyler Bray (not even drafted) An awful AWFUL class- I mean other than Geno. Teddy, Manziel, Bortles, Carr, Garapolo, McCarron, Fales, Mettenberger, Murray, hell even Boyd better than all of them. Last years class--other than Geno of course--sucked. _
