Regarding HaHa, I just think there are too many players that are just frankly better than he is in the top-12. Combine that fact with the fact that those players happen to be at high-value positions (QB, OT, LB, DE, WR.etc) and HaHa is a low-value player (S), I just don't see any way he goes in the top-12. Certainly not top-10. Amaro is a very poor blocker, and wouldn't fit the traditional in-line TE mould. His position would resemble more of a Graham split in the slot. That being said, he is not overly athletic and doesn't create mismatches like a Graham (or an Ebron) would. He's not fast, not overly quick, not very fluid. He has the lowest YAC of any of the big 4 TEs, and he's the worst blocker of the bunch. He's pretty much a big target- and that's it. If I'm getting a TE that's going to be a security blanket type, he better be able to block. Niklas over Amaro anyday.
Ebron's not an in-line TE either. He spent a lot of time in the slot and on the edge. One of the reasons I think he is likely to be less valued by the Jets is that they seem to be emphasizing the running game at this point. He's not the guy you want to draft to do that job.
ebron has a frame that can be filled out a little bit more to become a better blocker, but i honestly think troy niklas is the best TE for us
His routes are actually pretty fluid in my eyes, nice and crisp and consistent. He is actually the best blocker out of himself, Ebron, and ASJ. It's true he is more limited in his athleticism but he plays hard to the whistle, has high football IQ, and is consistent. That's exactly what I'd want in my security blanket TE personally.
1. Okay, what we have opposite him is a maybe a downgrade on paper, but lets not act like Milliner won't be a starter based on his rookie year. we need ONE more CB to reveal himself really. 2. Cumberland is our starter for better or worse, we need a better blocker at this position to go with him. upgradable, but its not like we don't have an average starter (receiving wise) 3. Change that to FS, Allen and Landry are just fine in the Strong Safety role (Allen has a great chance at being a long term answer there), the question is if we can have a genuine ballhawk, a Free safety is worth drafting high. 4. LG depth more like it (B.Winters insurance), how much we need this on the right side is dependent on how Campbell and Aboushi have developed. 5. ugh, that tired old fallacy? if you mean a reliable every down above average receiver, thats Decker regardless of who's drafted (even the most talented will take a bit to develop) 6. sure. no arguments. 7. Ivory dude, just need a pass catching compliment to his wild power backing style. edit: also, go blue shirts.
After reading through the list, I think I speak for all of us when I pray the BPA at 18 is a FB. Tommy gotta go. Other than Roger Vick, WHO'S WITH ME???????
Appreciate the update. I swear if Clyde Gates is on the team next year I will throw in the towel. The guy couldn't catch a cold.
I know right? if we don't draft a fullback in the first I'mma root for the Argonauts from now on. hmmm, we may have to trade up... do you think a 3rd and 2nd will do it? oh yeah, he's still here.... huh. I'd say he's good for competition bait, potential depth, ST prowess and consistency with Geno but... naaawww, not even, he doesn't need him here no more.
Something that I haven't seen discussed a lot, especially amongst those who think the team is destined to be worse this year, is the potential for improvement from some extremely promising young guys already on the roster. If these guys take the next step, this could be a much different Jets team in 2014. 5 guys to look for in 2014 (reverse importance order, in my mind): 5)Demario Davis - Entering his third year in the league, I would like to see Davis take the next step in both rounding out his game and advancing his leadership role among the linebackers and defense. He seemed to show some serious promise in his first year as a starter in 2013, but was a little inconsistent 4)Quinton C0ples - Another guy with some serious potential. Also entering his third year, Coples stepping up and becoming a disruptive force all year on defense would be enormous for the Jets 3)Sheldon Richardson - The 2013 DROY is already a force on the defensive line. With a year under his belt now and having worked out the rookie kinks, look for him to be even more dominant this year. I'd like to see him do what he did for the most part during his rookie campaign, but up his sack and QB pressure numbers a little bit. We now know what to expect from Wilkerson each year, so hopefully Richardson makes a big enough leap in year 2 to make this the best defensive line in the world 2)Brian Winters - The mass consensus seems to be that Winters struggled immensely during his rookie year. He didn't start for the first few games, and then took the job from Ducasse, mostly because Ducasse was so bad. Hopefully now that he is going into workouts and training camp knowing what's expected of him as a starting NFL offensive lineman, he is able to make massive improvements to his approach and his game. I put him all the way at #2, because if Winters could somehow turn himself in one off-season into a consistently solid NFL lineman, it would be a huge lift for the whole offensive line and therefore the offense. I believe that so much was made of D'Brick and Mangolds "struggles" because they have had to deal with sub par guard play in between them. Unless a can't miss guard prospect falls to the Jets, the job is Winter's to lose going into 2014. 1) Geno Smith - Not really too much needs to be said here. If Geno rises up and clearly beats out Vick for the job on his way to a more solid and consistent sophomore campaign, this is a completely different Jets team. I thought Smith showed a lot of promise at the position, and hopefully the 2014 storyline is that most of his mistakes from last year were "rookie mistakes" and don't plague him going forward. It would also be interesting to see what Smith can do if this receiving core can stay healthy. During his rookie year, Smith had about as ineffective weapons to work with as possible in the NFL, a lot of it due to injuries. *Honorable mention: Stephen Hill - I'm not sure that there is as much hope for Hill to step up next year as some of these other guys, but it doesn't change the fact that he does have the physical tools to do so. Even if he doesn't ever develop into an every down versatile type of receiver, having someone with this kind of size and speed to send down field would help big time in loosening up defenses giving some of our other guys more space to operate. We currently don't have any other player on the roster that can play this role. If nothing else, I want to see Hill stay healthy for an entire training camp and season, and see what the kid can really do. Everybody is excited about players we can add in this year's draft, and if we could land a few hits at positions of need as well as add depth at other positions, that would obviously be huge for the team. However, there are already a good amount of guys already on the roster whose improvements would be equally or more crucial.
I only left the Winters part in the quote, because he is the one I most want to address here. Before that, I am a big skeptic on Smith, but that's a whole other story. Davis I was expecting a lot from going into 2013. In fact while he was not bad, I don't think he impressed. Maybe he makes a leap up this year, but I am not counting on it. Coples I think is more likely to improve. He spent the early part of last year working his way into more playing time and playing the edge. I expect those to not be an issue this year, with him much more comfrotable in his role. He has his detractors, though, regarding his work ethic. Winters. Since I have been down on Ducasse for a long time, I was cheered by the move to replace him with Winters. I gave Winters some slack for quite some time, because as you allude to he had not had much work with the starters before his mid-season insertion in the starting lineup. But in fact as the year went on, I have to say he didn't really show the improvement you would expect. And expect here is a word that must be tempered by the reality that he was a third round pick starting as a rookie. In other words he was not seen in the draft as a top prospect, and so we should not be surprised he did not play like one. As you also point out I am sure the CS will be working with him to get him prepared to move up a couple of notches, and he's lucky to be playing between Mangold and Ferguson. Since imo he was the worst starter on the team, even worse than Smith, he has plenty of room for improvement. Whether he does, though, is open to question.
Yeah Winters went from awful early in the season to below average at the end so a little improvement there. He did switch positions though coming into the pro's so I cut him a lot of slack. Demario was very disappointing to me last year, he showed flashes of his speed but looked completely out of place in coverage so he need to drastically improve in that aspect in order for him to take that next step.
For some reason, I have a bit of faith that Sudfeld will develop into a solid, if not great TE. He has the tools to do it, and for some reason I feel like we will have robbed New England when it's all said and done.
Maybe Sudfeld could be our diamond in the rough at TE. I'm actually comfortable going into next season with Cumberland starting and Sudfeld as the 2nd TE.
I haven't read this whole thread, but has anyone noticed Mike Goodson is listed as Chris Goodson in the OP?
Sudfeld showed some flashes when he was on the field, I wouldn't mind seeing him bulk up a bit, there might be something there
You're right he's a little too skinny but he has some speed, he attacks the ball and he's a solid blocker.
Plus, he's a crazy looking long-haired white dude, those types of guys have a high rate of success in the NFL.
