That doesn't mean that you don't fill them with a rookie and take your lumps, like the Jets did last year. The idea that the Jets had to fill a hole like WR or CB or S with a vet on a 5 year deal just because the rookie was going to take his lumps is wrong. If you're building a good young team you have to let the rookies take their lumps. Otherwise you have a mid-career vet addition in the spot and you will never wind up good and young and cheap on the cap for a few years at that position. Who were the vet free agent CB's on the market in 2011? Those are the guys the Seahawks would be playing at CB now instead of Richard Sherman and whoever the other draftee/UDFA that they just won a Super Bowl playing with at the other position. Who were the vet free agent safeties on the market in 2010? Better sign one of those guys to a cap-hogging contract instead of letting Kam Chancellor win that job, you need a vet there because otherwise you have a hole. You can't win with later round draftees manning three quarters of your secondary. The Seahawks just proved that beyond a shadow of a doubt.
not every move is made to bring in a starter, he'd be brought in as depth. we will be drafting another corner unless a decent guy shakes free.
All we have is depth. Milliner, Walls and Wilson and maybe one of them should be starting in a Ryan defense.
Don't know much about Patterson but it sounds like he's solid when he's healthy playing in the slot. But what is the difference between this guy and a guy like Wilson? Patterson is 31 also..
They'd still be the Browns. I just don't get why so many Jets fans want the Jets to stick their nose into Browns, Redskins, Raiders territory. There's a reason those three franchises can't ever win even in a parity league. It's because they act like the Browns, Redskins and Raiders.
Gotta stay healthy in this league; but Patterson played very well in the games he actually played. His interception against T. Brady (throwing to R. Gronkowski) in week 8 was a thing of beauty.
Milliner is a starter, that is locked in w/o a doubt. Wilson is our nickel corner, Walls is depth as Patterson would be.
Most free agent rankings have him as the best corner available so I guess he's better than the rest of the free agent corners. I doubt he'd come in and be "the guy" but he would be a solid depth guy that has the ability to step in when needed
completely disagree with this sentiment. you don't just start rookies, and let them take their lumps whether they are ready or not. you let them compete. if they surprise you in camp, go ahead and start them. if not, they may need to be eased in. be a backup, maybe play some ST, and work hard to get in some limited snaps in a role capacity. then next season compete for playing time again, now with more knowledge of the system. starting every down in the NFL when you are not ready can hurt your progress more than help it. the best players should be on the field. but even if you banked on the draft, and letting rookies take their lumps.......what if said rookie gets hurt? where is the depth? you absolutely need a mix of youth, mid career vets, and older vets on every team. if the vets are FA acquisitions, you can generally move on from them in 2 yrs if needed, so long as you didn't get crazy in guarantees. and if they are the better player in the present, you start them instead of some rook who might be better in the future. there are way too many holes in this team to hope the draft addresses them with quality depth, let alone starters.
It's hilarious that people who just say "SIGN THIS PERSON FOR A BILLION DOLLARS" are ragging on people who support Idzik's plan of not overspending and building through the draft. There's a nice bit if irony there.
The Jets have 8 CBs on the roster right now, Dowling, Lankster, Milliner, Patrick, Rose, Walls, Wilson and Berry so again who is he better than? He played in 15 games over the last 3 years for 2 different teams and just how much depth do you want at corner?
Well we are similar to the Browns and Raiders in one regard: cap space. But I thought you were a big proponent of having lots of cap space? How does that jive with being critical of the Browns and Raiders? BTW, there are lots and lots of people who would say the same things about the Jets as you are saying about the Browns and Raiders.
Proabably better than all but Milliner (assuming he continues his progression from last year) and Wilson.
