Not saying that the charges won't affect his stock, but this is old news. This happened in late November, and an arraignment is just a formality. Everyone knew what happened. The arraignment in itself doesn't affect his draft stock in the eyes of NFL GMs because they all already knew about what happened. The action itself affected his stock, but his stock was affected months ago. It didn't just come out of the blue. His stock is only "dropping" because most draft gurus don't really look into the players all that much so nobody knew (I only know because I go to school at UofM) that he did this back in November.
Who I WANT(Taking Evans and the usuals are off the board): 1) CB Darqueze Dennard 2) TE Eric Ebron 3) FS Calvin Pryor 4) WR Brandin Cooks 5) WR Odell Beckham Jr Who I THINK Jets would have as their top 5 1) TE Eric Ebron 2) FS Calvin Pryor 3) WR Brandin Cooks 4) WR Odell Beckham Jr 5) CB Darqueze Dennard Take note that Ebron or Dennard both might not make it to pick 18. Possibly Pryor too.
Yep. I guarantee if Dennard just had 2 more inches on him, he's a top 10 lock and the Bills/Bucs begin fighting for him. He's really that talented of a cornerback. He looked like he didn't belong on the college level last year from what I saw. He plays more with fundamentals and being in the right position rather than try and go for pick six's and rely on his athleticism to make plays. Gilbert gets more love because he is faster, more athletic and is more of a gamebreaker.....Dennard won't get many INTs partly since after 3 or so years teams won't go after him and he more so looks to bat balls down and tip em away. I'd be so happy if Dennard was the guy at 18.
surprise to see the love fest for CB.....that would make 3 1st rounders in 5 years.....thats why our WR position has been a cluster ^!@%@* and we are 1 injury away from a decimated OL, and why we keep asking for an OLB that can sack a QB every year now going on 6 or 7 years straight. i understand the talent of the corners coming out but there comes a point where the team has to say geez we have to get some 1st round talent at these other positions. needless to say i do not prefer corner in round 1.....its almost a must in round 2. my pick would be ebron, barr, cooks, lewan, ford - not necessarily in that order.
CB is a must in round 5. Walt Aikens would be nice there. Before that CB is a luxury pick designed to let our coach not innovate and grow with his personnel. Edit: to put this another way, if Rex needs Darrelle Revis to get to an AFC Championship game then something is not right and the Jets aren't going to manage that feat in the next few years.
Aikens would be a great pick. Love his potential with the size and physical prowess. Had a solid Senior Bowl as well. I also wouldn't be shocked to see him go before that.
My gut tells me defense. The positions I think the Jets could take at 18 are WR/TE/CB/S/OLB/G That means the pick will be MLB/DL/OT Honestly, I don't know if there is one position I would really hate if it was taken, besides perhaps RB. I would even be OK with another versatile defensive lineman. I am all aboard the BPA approach.
My gut tells me defense too, but if it's another DT, I'm gonna puke, then freak out. The Jets have ZERO need for another DT. There's a point when bpa is not the smart strategy, and this is it with the DT position. They have great depth and absolutely ZERO need for another. With huge holes at CB, FS, OLB, WR, TE, OG and maybe SS and QB, Idzik would have to be a damn fool to take another DT. In that scenario, he should either seek to trade down or take the 2nd best player available, even if it means reaching a little. Unless Barr falls, I think the pick will be either Dennard or Gilbert. If it's a CB, I want Gilbert. I don't want another 1st round CB with no ball skills. That's stupid imo. I don't give a rat's patoot how good Dennard is in man and press coverage. If he can't create TOs, then he's next to worthless imo.
I agree that CB will probably be the pick which I'm ok with. I think that the fans would riot if a DT was the pick. I'm saying more along the lines of DE pass rusher. Someone who is drafted as a DL, but is versatile enough to play all over. What I really meant was if someone like Clowney fell to 18 (obviously he wont) I'd be fine if the Jets selected him. If a DE like that fell to 18, I'd be ok with the pick.
I think the Jets would have Marqise Lee in their top 5 and Beckham would also be higher on that list. we had a private meeting with Lee and Idzik has been down to a couple LSU games last year.
I think if Ebron is there, he'll be the pick. But if the board goes how I would project it does (which will be wrong anyway), I'd have to say either Brandin Cooks or Marquise Lee. Apparently Cooks' "character" is another big plus. Love that http://www.rotoworld.com/player/cfb/132533/brandin-cooks
I'd say only if one of Barr or Mack fall, in which case it would be hard to pass up. As far as CB vs WR/TE, I think after the dropoff from Dennard and Gilbert is larger than it will be for WR in the second. Also, with Decker on board, our WR situation isn't is bad as everyone thinks it is. I still think we need one of TE/WR in the first two rounds, but we shouldn't be horrible even in lieu of that.
4th or 5th round CB? Really? Give me a break bud .... go back and see the list of cbs drafted past round 3 in the nfl the last 10 years. I would bet the farm that you can't tell me who 90% of them are. Those are the guys who are entirely out of football within 3 years, trust me. The first thing is that the Jets need at corner is strongest considering they dont have a 2nd starting caliber cb and their cb1 is full of question marks. The wr position could be better but its not bad ... you have 2 starters right now. You ppl who will be disgusted if we draft a cb round 1 .... well thats a foolish opinion. Idzik will draft BPA at a position of need and CB HIGHLY qualifies. If Dennard or Gilbert for example are higher on their boards than Cooks for example, they arent reaching down for Cooks. Period. You may not have to worry because Dennard will prob be gone as will Gilbert. But you ppl really don't know what you're talking about. And also ... common sense 101 ... as Dax astutely pointed out, there is a big drop off at wr after watkins and evans. You can get value at wr in rounds 2 and 3 ... thats how a smart gm .... which you all think Idzik is .... works a position deep draft. you don't bypass BPA in round 1, and i don't think he will. And as for fans .... i have decided that as a whole we are mightily stupid at prognosticating who will be a good wr .... minus those sure fire top 5-10 pick prospects. i remember years ago so many of you were obsessed with Reggie Williams. Hahaha. You know some of you were. He was a total bust. It was the most moronic fan love fest leading up to draft, but it happens every year with some wr. It is NOT an easy position to predict nfl success. Meanwhile, how many of you can tell me with a straight face you were certain desean jackson was going to be pretty good? Anyway i'm really high on Dennard and to the guy saying he doesn't have ball skills and cant produce ints ..... LMAO! What Dennard are you talking about? Does he have a brother? Some of u are really good at typing out of your bungholes. anyway i'm not foolish enough or arrogant enough to say the jets must draft a cb .... im all for BPA at a position of need which these qualify: Cb, wr, te, ot, olb, ilb, og, qb, s, rb. If we draft a DT ... have to admit i'd scratch my head unless a top 5 prospect plummeted. At CB, Dennard is awesome, and some of you are hating now ... i'll remember who u are if we do get him hehe. And since i'm so convinced he'll be great, i'm sure he will be a bust!!! Haha
Teams drafting CB's in the 1st round have tended to under-achieve recently. Even over time a CB is not a high impact acquisition on a team's W-L record. Star CB's drafted recently in the 1st round: 2011 - Patrick Peterson (Ariz) 2010 - Joe Haden (Cle) 2007 - Darrelle Revis (NYJ) 2006 - Johnathan Joseph (Cin) 2004 - DeAngelo Hall (Atl) 2003 - Nnamdi Asomugha (Oak) 1999 - Champ Bailey, Chris McAlister. You want a really scary fact that illustrates what is going on here? The only 2 CB's in that list to play in the Super Bowl were both drafted in 1999. One of them played in the 2000 Super Bowl and the other in 2013. CB is an extraordinarily over-rated position in terms of championship play. Teams that spend a mint on CB's don't even get to Super Bowls, let alone win them. Why is CB so over-rated by the professionals who do the evaluations? Fear. It's like Rex Ryan says, CB is one of the two positions that will lose you a game the fastest (QB is the other). The problem is that for all the truth in that CB doesn't win you games. Having great CB's doesn't make you a great team unless their salary leaves you room for a lot of other great players also.
you make a solid point and I agree with some of what you say here .... HOWEVER, I would also add that if you want to be a championship contender without stellar cb play, you better have a terrifying pass rushing threat. As a unit the Jets DL is fierce, but they don't have that OLB that strikes fear in the QB on 3rd down, which is integral. The CBs you listed are pretty damn good, and you left out some other guys who have been very very good for stretches, maybe not great. I am of the opinion that Darqueze Dennard would fit into that list, and thus if you have to pay him only a rookie wage for 4 years, its a no brainer ... of course this is all assuming that he will be high on the Jets draft board, which might be totally wrong. My main point in all of this is that if the Jets have Gilbert and/or Dennard (who I think is better) ranked higher overall than say Cooks, Lee, or Beckham Jr., which I think is a very likely scenario based on what scouts say ... a majority that I've been reading, then I very highly doubt they bypass BPA and reach down below Dennard or Gilbert just to take a WR. I just dont see that happening, know what I mean. You can find WRs in the 3rd and 2nd round for sure. And while you made a good case stating that elite CB play is not a necessity, and I agree .... You can't have Kyle Wilson out there getting scorched like a s'more at a boy scout camping event. In that regard Rex is right CB play will lose you ball games .... See the @NE game last year or the @Buff game, and prob others that don't pop into my mind at the moment. And you just can't rely on a 2nd 3rd or holy cow the 5th round CB you propose coming in here and making an impact.
And just to add ... really quickly .... I only metioned Kyle Wilson, I don't know why me or others are letting Dee Milliner off the hook. I hope he improves drastically, but he was lousy last year until he had to play against Jason Campbell, Matt McGloin, and Ryan Tannehill. So yeah, we are all counting on him to hold down the fort at #1 cb ... scary proposition. CB is the Jets biggest need position, and I don't think they would nor should they reach down their board to grab a CB. I truly believe Izdik will draft their BPA at ANY of the NEED positions, which there are plenty. Who knows, lets get closer to May 8, see how things shake out and then I would feel better equipped to make a prediction on how the draft may play out. Way too speculative at this point, waste of time arguing with ppl who stubbornly think we should take a WR no matter what. I saw this dumb episode with the Reggie Williams craze years ago.
Do mean you'd convert that DE to an OLB? Otherwise, you mean to tell me you're gonna take Wilk or Richardson off the field? If you take a player at #18 in the first round, unless he's a QB, he has to start. There's no way the pick at #18 should be a DL, no way, unless they plan on benching or trading Wilk or Richardson, which would be insane.
