$2M of that is already paid, just shows up in the cap as the prorated signing bonus. It is $10.5M plus the $200K-$250K workout bonus.
The Eagles are putting pressure on the teams that are intrested that's what's going on here.Didn't Chip Kelly say he was staying at Oregon then two weeks later he changed his mind and joined Eagles?so ....
I've never understood why the Eagles aren't just paying Jackson this year and playing him and then dealing with whatever they have to next off-season. The guy just had a career year and he's 27 years old and his contract for the year is not crippling. The Eagles have cap space and they don't have to pay Foles until next year and maybe not until 2016. If the Eagles were a bad team not going anywhere I'd totally understand dumping the contract at the first opportunity. Ditto if Jackson had an off-year last year. The other thing is that Maclin is coming off a serious injury and Cooper has never carried the load. It makes more sense for the Eagles to keep Jackson, thereby likely enhancing his trade value in the off-season, and try to profit from a guy solidly in his prime this year while they are contending in a mediocre division. They're having a fire-sale for his services a year early and that makes me really leery about what's behind the move.
The Eagle's GM's response makes it seem that Desean is out. I wouldn't believe Chip Kelly for a second. I really hope we can land him....imagine having our Jets D paired with Vick, MJD, Kerley, Decker, Jackson and Eric Ebron for our offense. I'm a glass is half full kind of guy.
Chip Kelley doesn't determine whether he stays or not. I thought he was staying, but the GM makes it pretty clear that he wants him out. It doesn't mean shit how much Chip Kelley likes him.
Assuming 90% of what we hear isn't smoke and mirrors combined with media bs (which it probably is) I am asking the same question. It is really weird that Woody was so specific about their interest in him, I guess we'll find out what that was all about. It is true that the eagles could both afford his contract, and use his production, so why so eager to cut him?
It's definitely not the Eagles and the Jets colluding against Jackson. I'm guessing Woody just signaled interest in Jackson and then the pack descended on him and made that out to be more than it was. Reading the transcripts it doesn't seem like Woody ever specifically said the Jets wanted to sign Jackson as a free agent instead of trading for him. He said the Jets were interested in Jackson and talking about him. Given the circus atmosphere in Philly right now over "will DJax be here or won't he?" I doubt that mentioning him by name was clear-cut tampering. If a team puts a player's name out on the wind it's a lot different than if they are being tight-lipped and struggling through a difficult renegotiation. Then Woody said the Jets were more in draft mode than trade mode, which is something that the Jets have said publicly several times since Idzik took over. Then the reporters asked if the Jets would sign DJax if he was a free agent and Woody, without mentioning DJax by name said the Jets were always looking for players at the right price who were a good fit in the overall scheme. You could build a tampering case against Woody and the Jets but I'm betting the league office would say no after looking at it. There's too much smoke around DJax right now and any good tampering investigation would find multiple smoke outlets leading from the Eagles to the general public. Likely the most you would see would be a slap on the wrist for Woody and a general admonishment to the NFL and the Jets that player's names were strictly off-limits from now on. As an example: if Woody in response to the initial question had just said the Jets were talking about trading for Jackson there would have been no grounds for tampering at all. At least two other teams, Seattle and San Francisco have specifically mentioned Jackson by name in saying that they weren't interested in trading for him. It's all context and I think the context here is leading away from a successful tampering complaint by the Eagles.
I really didn't mean to make it out to be a big deal, it's just unusual for our owner to say anything about interest in other players. I'm not really worried about the whole tampering thing, it's just not the norm for the Jets, so it struck me as curious. I've stated all along how odd and out of character it would be for Idzik to go after DJax, even as a FA. I almost feel like this is more about the organization keeping fans interested with the false hope of a big time trade, and not complaining about why the team is doing little in FA.
IMHO, it's reasonable for PHI to keep Jackson. They've already eaten 2M of the 12.5M for the year, and it's unlikely either that the organization gets fair value or that they are able to replace Jackson's services. OTOH, it's also reasonable to think that PHI moves him this year. Afterall, this draft class is deep, culture is important, and there might be hidden gems in their system. That certainly would appear the case, given that they've taken phone calls, and teams have made offers. (Jackson's twitter posts not withstanding.) It seems like the Jets would be interested in Jackson's services and, not to quote Johnson, but "at the right price," why wouldn't they be . In any event, it's nice to see the media's circus tents propped around another northeastern team. Good stuff, really.
You guys thought Santonio Holmes was a jackass, just wait until DeSean Jackson plays for us. Guarantee there'll be a conduct suspension, or some bonehead move that costs a game in a big spot. Each year. OK, maybe not each year but you get the point. Wait, I know what will keep that from happening - Rex will name him captain. OK, let's do it ; )
Why? Jackson missed 1 game once because he missed a WR meeting. Hes a shotboat on the field but he's never been a problem with his teammates like Holmes was. He doesn't really make bonehead plays either. In fact he's made some huge plays at the end of games to win. Baseless speculation.
Rich Cimini @RichCimini 6m GM John Idzik wouldn't answer questions about DeSean Jackson, but said he's not philosophically opposed to having 2 big-money WRs. #nyj I still feel like Jackson will be a Jet when it's all said and done.
I do too. I think its a bit of a game of chicken. Eagles were disappointed that 0 good offers were coming out after the speculation that no one wanted to give anything up and the Eagles could be willing to cut him.
